Big Ben rarely chimes anymore, but he still watches over London like its massive, clock-faced protector. The sky is dark and the weather is rainy. It’s the UK after all. And yet Westminster Bridge is still busy as ever. And we are not alone. As we back up, we see a girl in a beanie and a leather jacket, with long orange hair, and as she turns to us we realise we are joined- for the first time on FGA programming- by “The She-King” Emery Layton, leaning on the bridge with a plastic blue fork in one hand and a load of chips in the other.
Emery Layton: Well then. Here comes trouble.
Em turns her whole body to us, still with lovely delicious chips in hand.
Emery Layton: Know it’s a bit early but I had a free week, kinda. Thought I’d come out here early, have a bit of a nosey around. Find all the chippies. Just a little jaunt on my own, y’know? My Ma used to hate it when I’d run off on my own. Oof, she’d have a right go at me at the end of the day. See, we’d be in a new place every week pretty much. It was like a routine. We rock up in the caravans in some carpark, stay a few days and feel the people in houses giving us evils through the curtains wishing we were anywhere else until finally one of ‘em gets the nerve to call the police. They show up, tell us we got forty-eight hours to get outta there, we milk those two days dry and we move on to the next place we found during that time anyway. Clockwork. The Laytons had it down to a fine art. But me? Nah, that one little car park wasn’t enough. I gotta go out, I gotta go see the world. Always been like it! I’d go off to the nearest village or town or whatever and just go round, talking to people or hanging about. Come back home and a mouthful, but it was worth it. I was curious! I wanted to see stuff! But my ma, she was one of those people who’d say “curiosity killed the cat”.
She looks to the side. She sniffs up and scratches her nose, shuffling her feet a little with an air of bitterness.
Emery Layton: Yeah. Well. She would say that. Not even the right phrase, anyway. Everyone gets that one wrong. Curiosity is what gets me outta bed in the morning. Well, that and my alarm. Kate Bush “The Red Shoes”, six o’clock, on the dot, every morning. But more often than not, it’s curiosity. I been at this a long long time now. I’m older than you think but young enough for it not to really matter just yet. I been all over the world and I won all sorts of titles and tournaments and all that fun, lovely, shiny stuff. But what’s the point of a life of exploration if you’re gonna visit the same old places anyway? Nah! Where’s the fun in that? I’ve had my eye on FGA a long time. What, ten years and you think I never came to a show during that? Laurel Anne Hardy and Pendragon fan? Friends who work here? Couldn’t have kept me away if you tried. Always meant to give this place a look, but it had to be right, know what I mean? Like, it had to be something big and appropriate and stuff. And then I heard you were gonna be here! In London! See, there’s one of them daft double-decker buses they got here. That’s how you know.
And yes, a double decker bus does indeed go past amongst the other traffic. It’s very big and red. Em gives it a quick wave, but it goes largely ignored, much to her disappointment. Turning back to us, she continues.
Emery Layton: But to do something big, you gotta take a step back and you gotta listen. Cos the thing with me and the fans is we got a little bit of a thing going on, y’know, we’re in tune with each other, so when I wanna see what’s big and what’s cool these days I look to them. I look at who they like or who they don’t. I listen, I keep my ear to the ground. Lowri Moss. “Fan Favourite of the Year.”
She smiles. And it’s genuine, too. She means it. There’s no spite in the smile, as she nods with enthusiasm.
Emery Layton: I love it. I really do. And rightfully so, too. I known Lowri now for a good few years, and she’s only got better since. And she’ll keep getting better. And they love it! The people love them some Lowri, and for them she’s the person to beat. But my brain don’t work the same as other people’s, that curiosity keeps ticking and ticking away, and I look at Lowri and I say to myself “...could I beat her?” Could I beat Lowri Moss? I get goosebumps, I lose sleep over questions like that and they don’t stop till I get an answer. So I reach out to FGA, cos it couldn’t have happened nowhere else. I speak to them, I practically beg and I say to them “guys, you just gotta give me Lowri Moss”. Cos I reckon I could give her a real challenge. Same kinda challenge she could give me.
Placing her chips down for a few seconds, the Last Of The Runaways sheepishly removes her beanie as she bows her head.
Emery Layton: I’m clumsy, I get stuff wrong and this morning, I nearly tripped over sat down tryna tie my hi-tops but when I’m in the ring. When I’m in there…everything makes sense. Everything’s clear. I’m not the smartest, but I know my shit in that ring. And so does Lowri. Boy oh boy, doesn’t she just. I wanna know her limits. I wanna know if she can take me to mine. I wanna know what mine even are. I dunno who better to help me find that out, and there’s no better place to do it than at Royal Battle. And yeah, the thing is everyone gets it wrong, Lowri! The full phrase is this; curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back. That quest for satisfaction brought me back to wrestling two years ago and I won’t be satisfied until you and me are in that ring together giving London, FGA and professional wrestling the kinda match they’ll never forget. I don’t want the Undisputed Championship you fought so long and hard to get, and I don’t want no shot I didn’t earn. I just wanna know if I can beat the standard bearer of this company. So gimme the Lowri Moss I always known you can give me, and I’ll give you everything I got, too.
Triumphantly shoving her hat back on her head, she holds her arms out, pointing to the very ground she’s standing on.
Emery Layton: Royal Battle At The Royal Albert Hall, right here in London. Match is made and the date is set. And I challenge you, Lowri Moss. Go beat Seth Iser, go throw Cordelia Stevenson off a ladder, and then come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough.
Chips back in hand, Emery Layton leaves us, sauntering away into the night, on the dark and rainy streets of London town. We’ll see her again, and this time, she’ll be facing Lowri Moss.
