CHARACTER BACKGROUND
PERSONALITY:
Showboat, crowd pleaser.
STRENGTHS:
Experience - Monty’s been doing this for over twenty years. He’s seen just about everything there is to see in the wrestling business. He’s a grizzled old veteran who can counter pretty much anything that gets thrown at him. He’s face all different styles of wrestler and has learned all that he can from them.
Creativity - An out of the box thinker, Monty isn’t afraid to try new things or pull some unorthodox moved that he learned from a joshi working the indy circuit in Omaha once upon a time. He’s got a thousand tricks up his sleeve to try, even if they don’t always work as well as he might like.
Mentor Mentality - For a guy who got saddled with a five year old when he could barely take care of himself, Monty’s done all right. And in teaching his niece the ins and outs of the wrestling business, he discovered a capacity for teaching that he didn’t know he had. So Monty’s always willing to help out younger talent and let them pick his brain. The conversation might be peppered with weird asides, but it becomes pretty clear pretty fast that Monty’s a walking encyclopedia and he’ll lend a hand to anyone who asks.
WEAKNESSES:
Trust No One - Monty Margolis believes in just about every conspiracy theory there is - except mole people, because that’s just ridiculous. He’s suspicious of pretty much anyone in authority, including the management of any wrestling company, but he wants to get paid so he does his best to keep his suspicions under control.
I’m Not Okay, I Promise - His whole life, Monty has struggled with mental illness. It’s been better controlled since he took responsibility for Gwen, but there are still days and weeks when he struggles with what’s going on in his own head and wonders if the real enemy has been his brain all along. Usually his niece is able to snap him out of it, but he wonders how much longer that can possibly last.
Wear and Tear - Monty is past forty and has been wrestling for more than half his life. He does the best he can to keep in shape and stay healthy, but the truth is that he’s not nearly as young as he once was and it takes him much longer to recover from matches than it used to.

BACKGROUND:
John Montague Walker was ten years younger than his brother Michael and though he was doted on by his parents, it was clear from an early age that John wasn’t quite the same as his older brother. Doctors chalked it up to an overactive imagination when he’d claim to hear people talking to him and blamed his hyperactivity on him just being a young boy. Michael had been quiet, studious, and an all-around good kid. By comparison, Monty was a nightmare. He was loud, impulsive, and seemingly determined to get into as much trouble as he could. And while Michael tried to influence his younger brother, it became clear as John entered his teens that he was going to do exactly what the hell he wanted, regardless of what his brother thought he should do.
At fifteen, Monty discovered professional wrestling and he was hooked. It was all he wanted to do, to the point where he dropped out of school between his junior and senior year to pursue it full time. It was a risky move, but John, now going by his ring name Monty Margolis, seemed to be somehow more balanced now that he was out of his parents’ house and doing something he loved. It wasn’t the life his parents had envisioned for him, but he was making it work.
When Monty was twenty, his niece Gwendolyn was born. Michael and his wife had some misgivings about leaving Monty alone with the baby, but as she grew older, they grew more comfortable. Monty was always on his best behavior around the little girl, and he was usually available during the week, so he became her default babysitter. That was how he ended up with her on the night his brother and sister-in-law died. Only twenty-five and having already lost his parents, Monty wasn’t sure he could survive taking care of this little thing by himself. But when no one from his sister-in-law’s family stepped up, his choices were either to raise the girl himself or let her become the responsibility of the state of Texas. So Monty and Gwen became their own little family unit, and as soon as he could, Monty bought an RV and started traveling the country with his niece, introducing her to wrestling as he traveled from show to show. It was easier to live out of the RV, and money was often tight once the life insurance ran out, but Monty made it work.
Gwen was his motivation and his saving grace. And now that he’s hit forty and she’s just entering her prime, Monty has begun to seriously think about how to help her career and let her develop a name for herself. So he brought them to Frontier Grappling Arts, hoping that this would be the key to opening the door for Gwen’s future stardom in the business.

RING ENTRANCE:
The sound of static echoes through the arena and the tron goes blank suddenly as Joe Cocker’s cover of “Come Together” begins to play. At the top of the stairs in the crowd is Monty Margolis, draped in his pirate flag and looking off into the distance.

He come groovin’ up slowly
He got joo joo eyeballs
He one holy roller
He got hair down to his knees
Got to be a joker
He just do what he please[/i][/center]
Monty moves down through the crowd slowly, jamming to the music and holding onto the corners of his pirate flag like a cape. He steps carefully over the barricade and ascends the ring steps, raising his flag high.
Announcer: Introducing from the Open Road, he is the Lizard Man with a Plant, the Mastermind of All Time, the Post-Apocalyptic Pirate, Monty Margolis!
Monty grins and tosses the flag aside, holding his arms out to bask in the cheers from the crowd before he settles in his corner, gripping the top rope and watching for his opponent.
