Our cameras open up in the backstage area where we see “The Chief”, Evan Envi, dressed to compete, along with a t-shirt that reads “do better.” seated in a folding chair in the dressing room, earning a pop from the live audience in attendance. Envi is leaned slightly forward, tightening the laces on his boot before someone taps gently against the door. The camera pans out, revealing that the door is already open. Spencer Burke stands in the doorway and clears his throat.
Spencer Burke: ‘Evening, Evan. Got a few minutes?
Evan Envi: Ah. Spence. For you?
Evan gives Spencer a look of disgust-- though the mutual half-smiles of both men dismiss it as a joke.
Evan Envi: Sure. Stop standing in the hall like a creep though.
Burke chuckles under his breath and walks into the room, noting the absence of Envi’s tag team partner.
Spencer Burke: No Kazu-- no SUPERNOVA?
Evan Envi: Not this week, friend. I mean, I can still serenade you if you want.
Spencer Burke: I’ll one-hundred percent be holding you to that. But right now I want to know what your path looks like after that performance at Only the Strong Survive. It came down to just you and the eventual winner Lowri Moss and at several moments it looked like you were just one step away from a World Title match. I know how much it meant to you to climb back into that main event-- so now, what’s step one?
Envi folds his hands, leaning back in the chair for just a moment. He considers it in silence-- before leaning forward again, pointing to Spencer.
Evan Envi: I think I showed my hand too early-- giving Salem a full week to think about how she’s gonna counter the Liger Bomb. Step one is making sure Salem does not counter that Liger Bomb.
Spencer Burke: Was… probably looking for a more broad answer, actuall--
Evan Envi: Step two is making sure that people don’t look at me, and my demeanor, and my actions since I’ve come back from injury, and confuse it for weakness. I understand how close I was to being--
Evan pauses, taking a deep breath, trying to articulate.
Evan Envi: I could’ve easily been stuck at home with no way of coming back to wrestling. It’s not something that resonates with someone unless they’ve been in that hole. I was lucky. And I worked really hard to get back here, but I didn’t work hard to just be here. I can’t afford to let someone as talented as Salem to beat me and use that to take MY spot in an International Heavyweight Title match or a World Title match. She will not do that.
The words earn another pop from Evan’s supporters in attendance. Burke nods, taking the words in for a moment before following up.
Spencer Burke: Speaking of our World Title match… I’d be remiss to not ask; what was your reaction to that ending…?
Evan doesn’t immediately respond, prompting Spencer to unnecessarily elaborate.
Spencer Burke: ...to Seth Iser defeating Fujiko Mine at Only the Strong Survive to become your new FGA World Champion?
Evan opens his mouth-- and simply sighs. He clears his throat and reaches to his side, glancing quickly at the screen of his phone before he rises to his feet.
Evan Envi: Well. I think… obviously Seth Iser is a really, really good wrestler. I um… I’m guilty of being as shocked as some of those fans in the audience when he had his hand raised though. I saw that match and Fujiko’s reign going a certain way, you know? And-- and maybe selfishly, I envisioned Fujiko being on the other side of that ring when I made my way back to the World Title. She was one of the best champions in all of wrestling. I think she proved it to everyone that saw her. But… congrats to Seth Iser. He killed it, right? That’s the energy I guess I need to have against Salem.
Evan sighs again. He looks down for a second before nudging Spencer.
Evan Envi: I gotta take a walk.
Spencer Burke: Oh. Uh-- am I following you?
Envi responds, already making his way out of the locker room.
Evan Envi: If you wanna be weird.
Spencer throws his hands up, clearly not finished questioning the Chief. Envi smirks, shaking his head a bit, walking around the corner-- but our camera operator quietly follows behind him.
Evan continues to walk, giving quiet nods to several of the mask-clad technicians and referees as he passes by. Eventually, Envi enters a brightly-lit corridor, also lined with dressing rooms. Envi stops at the second door on his right, raising a hand, hesitating for only a second before knocking. The camera operator approaches slowly, and focuses on someone wearing an oversized leather jacket. Their identity is given away by the tall blonde woman speaking with her. As Evan approaches, the blonde looks up, and the woman in the jacket turns around. For the first time in a long time, we Fujiko Mine without a championship on her person. She cannot stop a smile from forming on her face as she sees who approaches. The camera momentarily focuses on XENA’s face, who remains stoic.
Fujiko Mine: Hey, Evan.
It is a much more pleasant tone than audiences are used to between the two bitter foes. Fujiko doesn’t bother to dismiss the smile that snuck up on her face when she recognized him. XENA looks at the two of them, and appears to want to say something, but she instead bites her tongue. Fujiko notices, and they exchange a series of looks before Fujiko turns to face The Chief.
Fujiko Mine: How are you feeling? Big match tonight.
Evan Envi: Yeah… I think the gravity of the whole thing keeps sneaking up on me. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to make everything click, but I feel it tonight. Honestly. It’s just, I…
He gestures toward Fujiko, and almost instinctively gestures toward the spot on her shoulder where the World Championship would typically be draped. Quickly, he corrects himself, lowering his hands and looking directly at Fujiko.
Evan Envi: What about you? I mean… we haven’t really talked about Only the Strong Survive. And we don’t have to. But I gotta ask how you’re holding up.
Fujiko takes a look at her own shoulder as Evan gestures towards it, and then takes a second before returning her gaze to Evan.
Fujiko Mine: I’m alright. Still a little sore. Missing the extra accessory. But…
She offers him a shrug. XENA gives a look from behind Fujiko that she misses, suggesting more.
Fujiko Mine: The only thing to do is pick myself back up, work twice as hard.
There is a moment’s hesitation, then a smirk crosses her face.
Fujiko Mine: Had XENA bring my gear. Considering trying to goad Seth into giving me my rematch tonight.
She gives a small roll of the eyes. The comment brings a half-smile to the Chief’s lips. He laughs lightly at the idea.
Evan Envi: I’ve come up with way worse.
Fujiko Mine: It’s a long shot, but the man is a Bond Villain. Smart, but not nearly as smart as he thinks he is. So maybe I can get it back.
Evan Envi: Ha. Maybe I should’ve tried that with you.
Fujiko wrinkles her nose, unsure how to react for a moment. She laughs a little, but is caught off guard.
Fujiko Mine: I mean, you never really did ask for a rematch, but I would’ve given it to you.
Shaking his head, Envi laughs again, taking a single step back before he sighs gently.
Evan Envi: I hope whatever you do next works out though. I’m not giving up on us.
Pause. Evan’s eyes widen, quickly realizing--
Evan Envi: Us. The-- the idea of you versus me… I mean.
Evan’s gaze awkwardly travels toward XENA-- and he quickly looks away, back to Fujiko.
XENA shakes her head and lets out a sigh before patting Fujiko on the shoulder and walking away. Fujiko instinctively takes a step backward, and then realizes she’s been left to stand with Evan alone. She processes the situation for a moment, teeth catching the inside of her cheek.
Fujiko Mine: So, you’re telling me all I had to do was hang on to the title a little longer, and you would’ve wanted to talk about us? And by us I mean another match?
Her eyes tell of facetiousness on her part. She compliments it by taking a confident stance.
Fujiko Mine: So I just gotta beat Seth Iser and get my title back, and then you’ll want to talk about us, hm?
She expression not dropping, she winks at the Chief.
Fujiko Mine: Duly noted.
Evan’s expression and poise remain calm-- but his cheeks visibly grow red. He blinks a few times and quickly responds.
Evan Envi: I’m n-- I wasn’t stri--
Envi awkwardly laughs, crossing his arms.
Evan Envi: I mean, you don’t have to win the title back for us to talk about us. You could lose every match from here on out for all I care, and--
Cheeks grow redder.
Evan Envi: I mean-- I do care. That would never happen, obviously.
The Chief stammers.
Evan Envi: I’m--
Fujiko puts her hand up to stop him. She pauses for a moment, and then uses that same hand to suppress a laugh.
Fujiko Mine: But what’s your *incentive* if I’m not the champion, Evan?
She crosses her arms over her chest.
Fujiko Mine: Unless...you were talking about something in a non-wrestling capacity. You did ask for us to go out some time ago, right?
She shifts her weight to her other foot, and the familiar, almost-bashful smile returns to the Chief’s face.
Evan Envi: Sounds familiar.
Fujiko Mine: But that couldn’t be what you meant. You meant a wrestling match, right?
Evan smiles, nodding a bit-- but not a nod as an answer to Fujiko’s question; more as a silent confirmation to himself before he speaks.
Evan Envi: Fujiko. Let me take you out after the show.
There’s an audible pop from some members of the audience, and merely a curious “ooooh!” from others at Envi’s directness.
Evan Envi: Somewhere-- something far removed from all of this…
He gestures to the general area around them, talking directly of their workplace.
Evan Envi: Just us.
Although faint, contained to small sections of the live crowd, chants of “YES!” permeate the scene. The camera briefly pans toward Fujiko, who barely holds down a smile as she nods to Evan and begins to back away. Envi’s smile threatens to break into a grin, but he remains relatively poised. Fujiko continues to back away, until she can’t anymore and turns to leave from the camera’s view.
Kris Cruise: I think we have a date!
Stephy Auger: I’m nauseous, Cruise. Is this Vertigo or Love Island? I’m-- UUUGH, I could spit. Evan better stay focused! He already has a date tonight. And it’s with Salem! And she’s gonna punch him in his stupid face!
Kris Cruise: You’re so angry.
We fade away as Envi turns, making his way out of frame, returning the way he came as we fade.
Spencer Burke: ‘Evening, Evan. Got a few minutes?
