Ace Voltage would not be the man he is today without his mentor. Ace was not always this way. Ace wasn’t always cocky, braggadocios, or disrespectful. He was molded into this. He was molded into a world champion wrestler. The one man he credits everything to, his mentor, Nashville Joe. Joe and Ace met about 5 or 6 years ago in Arizona in SCW. Joe was the resident world champ bad guy and Ace had just arrived during his big title run as a new trainee. Ace thought he knew himself, he thought he knew how to be the bad guy that everyone would hate. But the first few weeks were tough. That is until Nashville Joe saw him as a diamond in the rough and took him under his wing. Joe taught Ace everything he knew about being the best, about being a guy that the crowd hates. If the crowd is booing you, you’re doing your job. Joe and Ace became good friends and ran SCW together. Joe took care of Ace, leading him to go on strike when their working conditions weren’t the best. Eventually, Joe had to leave Arizona for greener pastures. But, right after he was gone, Ace took over SCW and became the face of the promotion. Some may say that the only person who knows the real Ace Voltage is Nashville Joe. Without the influence of Joe, who knows where Ace would’ve ended up…
This flashback dates back to early 2019.
We see Ace sitting his in NYC apartment, pacing around his living room. He is in sweat pants and a hoodie, looks like he hasn’t shaved or gotten a haircut in a few months. He has his phone in his hand and he starts to dial a number.
Ace Voltage: Hi, can I speak to Joe? Tell him it’s Ace. He’ll know who it is.
We can see Ace’s hand shake a little bit, obviously he is nervous for some reason. He takes a breath, puts the phone on his coffee table and puts it on speaker so he can relax on the couch.
Man on the phone: It’s been a while Ace…
Ace Voltage: You don’t even know what I’ve been through the last year Joe. That’s why I’m calling, mate.
We learn that the man on the phone is Ace’s mentor, Nashville Joe.
Nashville Joe: Well I’m guessing it must be important. You only need me when it’s important.
Ace Voltage: Joe, don’t play this game. You’ve been down in Mexico for years now doing your thing. I just got out of rehab for painkillers, give me a break.
Nashville Joe: Painkillers, huh? I would’ve bet a more hardcore drug for you to become addicted to than painkillers.
We hear a slow chuckle from Joe on the phone.
Ace Voltage: Funny. I’m fine, thanks for asking. But, I didn’t call to talk about my personal life. I called for some advice about wrestling.
There is a pause from Joe.
Nashville Joe: Wrestling? You haven’t wrestled on a consistent basis for three years. You can’t possibly tell me you’re itching for it again? After the family deaths, rough break-up, and rehab that I didn’t even know about, you think you can wrestle again?
Ace Voltage: Listen, Joe. I feel great. Rehab helped me in so many ways. I am a new man, one who wants to right his wrongs. One who wants to prove to everyone that I am not a failure. That I can still be the best in the world like I was five years ago with you.
Joe chuckles to himself.
Nashville Joe: Ace, that was a long time ago. You were a young 27 year old wrestler in your prime. You had a good two year run but that was your peak. Hell, for half of it, I was the reason you were in the spot you were in. If I never took you under my wing, who knows what would’ve happened.
We see an annoyed look on Ace’s face.
Ace Voltage: Joe, I can do it. I have been working out, eating healthy, seeing a therapist. I’m good man, I think I can do it. I need to do it for myself, Joe. I need to show everyone that I was not a fluke in Arizona or Vegas. That I can be a champion again. I have the confidence to do this again.
Nashville Joe: Even if you were able to do it, what place would even hire an ex addict? You know publicity is a big thing. Something you never shied away from though.
Ace Voltage: There’s this company, Frontier Grappling Arts. It’s been around for a while with a great reputation. I think I can thrive there, man. Of course, there are some familiar faces too.
Nashville Joe: Familiar faces? Wouldn’t you want a clean slate? Who even is there that you know from SWA?
Ace takes a pause as he know Joe may not like the answer.
Ace Voltage: Ricky Valero and Ashley Chase.
Joe takes a second to answer.
Nashville Joe: Do you really think wrestling in a company with those two is really best for you? I mean you were obsessed with Ashley for a year and Ricky bullied you all throughout SWA. You really can’t pick a place with nobody from your past?
Ace Voltage: I need some familiarity, Joe. It will help me, trust me. Maybe I can reconcile with Ricky. My therapist is helping my cope with obsession over certain girls. I can do this Joe. I have the right mindset.
Nashville Joe: Listen, I’ve always been a straight shooter with you Ace. My gut thinks this is a bad idea, but I trust you. I think you will do the right thing here. If you think you’re ready, if you think you can face your past demons then do it. You were a world champion before, you can do it again.
Ace smiles as it looks like a big weight just dropped off his shoulders. Joe's opinion has always meant a lot to Ace.
Ace Voltage: Thanks, Joe. I am ready for this. I will become a champion again and show the world that Ace Voltage is the real deal. I’m only 33, I can do this for another 10 years if I want. I’m not doing this for anyone but myself. And that makes me a dangerous competitor.
Nashville Joe: Well good luck Acey boy. I’ll be rooting for ya. I’ve got to head out, but I’ll try to watch some matches if we get the channel. Adios amigo.
Nashville Joe hangs up and we see Ace sitting on the couch in silence. He gets up and goes over to his kitchen to pour himself some water.
Ace Voltage: Ace Voltage is ready to return to wrestling. 2019 will be the year. Watch out world, the wrestling business is about to change.
The camera starts to fades out as we see Ace take a sip of his water.
