The truck is heard before it's seen. This quiet suburban street is filled with the sound of children laughing and playing, and the buzzing that comes from proud gardeners taking advantage of this beautiful sunny day to mow their lawns. But other noises begin to overtake those. Specifically the whine of a five-cylinder engine, four of which are working properly, and the jaunty strains of Yankee Doodle Dandy, as played on what sounds to be someone farting it through a metal tube.
Finally the screech of tyres is heard and here, barrelling round the corner, comes a stately 1993 Mercedes TN. This is the rustiest, dirtiest, not-food-hygiene-approvedest ice cream van you've ever seen. It tips onto two wheels momentarily as it mounts the pavement, leaving black skids of rubber on the road behind it, then comes to rest with a shudder and a little plume of smoke escaping through the front grille. After a second the front bumper drops off on one side to scrape on the ground. Spray painted on the rollers covering the serving window is the phrase "JiMMy is a NONCe". We only get a moment to read it before those rollers slide up and guess who it is! That's right, it's your friend and mine, the ice cream man himself Jimmy Sprinklez!
The man in the dairy mask leans on the counter and waves a greeting. In the most outrageously filthy Cockney voice in history, he says: "'Ow do, kids! It's yer old pal Jimmy here, ready once again to serve you up two scoops of fun!"
Now, after a strange and slightly awkward amount of time has passed since the van appeared, the children playing in the street put down their dolls and marbles and hula hoops and run up to the van with a cheer. Jimmy beams as he hands out delicious frozen treats - "One for you, one for you... here you go, darlin'..."
Then he fixes his mask's eyes on the screen and... makes a head gesture that seems like he would be winking, if not for the fabric. "And what about you, then?" he asks us, "What can ole Jimmy get you?"
Another special friend appears behind him - it's everybody's favourite froggy confectioner, Sherbet! She waves hi excitedly, bouncing up and down, then holds out a double cone with a scoop of purple and turquoise swirled ice cream nesting in each cup. It has two lovely looking chocolate bars sticking out of it.
"Oh look!" exclaims Jimmy, "Sherbet's whipped up a special new treat for us to try! Are you excited to taste it, girls and boys? I know I am!"
The camera begins to zoom in on her ice cream and everything goes all wavy...
We find ourselves in Jimmy's living room, tastefully decorated in pink, yellow and blue with a cupcake mural. He's in the middle of putting up a shelf. He lifts up one side of it and holds it against the wall... he nods, satisfied, then crosses to the other end and lifts that up too. But the first end slides down the wall with a "wooooop" noise and the sole item on the shelf, a happy looking potted flower, slides down! Jimmy gasps and hurries to the other side, lifting that up - only for the shelf to tip the other way and the flower to slide back! The pot begins to fall to the ground. Jimmy catches his plant friend just in time (it wipes its brow with a leaf) then scratches his head.
"I just don't understand this at all!" he exclaims, then turns to us. "Do you have any ideas how I can keep this shelf steady, children?"
A chorus of little voices calls out:
"Stack some books under it!"
"Put a peg in the wall!"
"Hire a professional!"
"just keep your stuff on the floor!"
But instead of following any of those suggestions, Jimmy snaps his fingers. "Strike a light, I've just had a bright idea!"
And the screen sweep-swoops to the same scene but this time Sherbet is there! She holds one end of the shelf in place while Jimmy hammers the other with a big, cartoonish mallet. When he's done he stands back and admires his handiwork, joined by Sherbet. "There we go," says Jimmy proudly, "It was so much easier with a little bit of help! Thank you, Sherbet!"
And she puts an arm around his shoulders and gives a thumbs up! Then we mix back to the ice cream van, where Jimmy's holding the special sweet treat Sherbet brought earlier. Half of it is eaten now.
"That sure was fun, wasn't it, kiddies?" he asks, "I wonder what else is waiting for us in this lovely cone?"
Once again, things get all wavy as we zoom in on the ice cream. This time, it's a beautiful park (or at least a set of one, with a few big bushes in pots in front of a colourfully painted backdrop) with a plastic moon hanging from a rope. Now Jimmy is standing in front of patch of dirt, and at his feet is something about six feet long wrapped in black plastic. He begins to dig in the ground with a shovel, but it's hard going. After just a few digs he begins to pant, and he turns to the camera after wiping his brow.
"Oh no, boys and girls. I need to dig a big hole really, really quickly, but it's taking so long! Whatever can I do to make it quicker?"
Once again, the chorus comes:
"Rent a backhoe!"
"Find a hole someone else already dug!"
"Just put it in a car compactor!"
"Use a bigger spade!"
"Those are all good ideas..." But Jimmy has something else to say. "Wouldn't you know it? I've only gone and had a brainwave!"
Sweep-swoop again, and now Sherbet is helping Jimmy dig the hole. They're done in no time, and once they're happy with it, the big friendly frog looks around suspiciously before kicking the wrapped up package into it. Jimmy pats her on the back and says "Goodness me, Sherbet, I don't know what I'd have done without you! Now let's fill in this hole again right sharpish before the fuzz show up!"

Once more, the image mixes back to the ice cream van. Jimmy's leaning on the counter again, resting his pointy chin on his knuckles. He couldn't be happier. "Well! I've certainly learned an important lesson today, girls and boys! Things are better when you do them together! Sherbet helped me put that shelf up... Sherbet helped me dig that hole... things that would have been a lot harder without her!"
Behind Jimmy, Sherbet bounces around again, waving with both hands, very pleased with how she was able to help her friend.
"It's an important thing to know, kids. Things are fun and easy when you do them with friends! I'll be sure to remember that - and so will Sherbet!" Sherbet nods enthusiastically.
The ice cream van's chimes ring suddenly. Jimmy and Sherbet glance up at them then back to the camera.
"Well children, it looks like it's time for us to move on. Who knows, maybe we'll be on YOUR street tomorrow! And remember that things are better when you do them together! We'll see you next time!" And he pulls down the rollers. A moment later the van's engine starts up again, and after coughing some smoke from the exhaust, it reverses away... running over a bicycle... and hares off down the road.
