Maritza Diaz approaches the bar. She checks the weights on both ends before slipping underneath the bar resting it on her shoulders and grabbing either end with both hands. After taking a few quick breaths, she pushes up lifting the bar off the rack. After a moment's wait, she drops down in a perfect squat before powering her way back up slowly. Determination on her face turns into relief as she reaches the top of her stance and re racks the bar.
She runs over to a bench where she sits down, picks up a bottle of water and takes a drink. Next she grabs a notebook and a pin and starts to jot something down, smiling the whole time. Suddenly someone seated on that same bench speaks.
PEDRO: How can you work so hard and still be the most beautiful woman in the whole world?
The “Power Princess” playfully rolls her eyes.
MARITZA: How can you be such a dork and still be the guy I want to kiss?
She places her hand under his chin leans in and kisses him softly...then swats him with her note pad.
MARITZA: Now stop distracting me! I want to be ready for this weekend. Not only is it my debut in the FGA but it’s our first time as a team and I don’t want to disappoint in either of those things.
Pedro rubs his head and teasingly pouts.
PEDRO: Fine! I didn’t want to play with you anyway.
He sticks out his tongue. But the the Power Princess is having none his shenanigans choosing instead to keep on hitting him with that damn notepad before he scurries off lest he get injured via paper cut. As Mexico City’s Favorite Son exits the room, he meets the camera’s gaze.
PEDRO: You bastards just can’t stay away, can you?
There’s a smile on his face.
PEDRO: Just as well, there’s a few things I need to get off of my chest anyway.
He takes a deep breath and begins yet another one of his long winded rants. This time, in FRONTIERVISION!
PEDRO: March 27th, 2017.
A beat.
PEDRO: Honestly, the signs were there. The Axxess Network twitter saying things about another FGA show, the poll choosing the name in the vaguest way possible posted by Paco himself...oh, and the fact that we took a longer than normal hiatus and were told to show up for a company meeting. Yet the vast majority of the roster didn't quite get it. They couldn't read said signs.
So when the absorption was announced, it was like the aliens had suddenly invaded Center Stage and went 'Hellooooo, meatbags! Meet your new intergalactic overlords! We've come to slurp your brains up and wash it down with a fine wine'. Everything went silent in that room on that day. But if you listened carefully, you could barely hear a cacophony of people internally freaking the hell out.
Meanwhile, I hit a number on my speed dial. It was my lawyer. Being a man of Hispanic origins living in present day America--one who had crossed the border at that!--means that I need to take every precaution I can. A bit of haggle, a moment of consultation. Yet it didn't take all that long for me to sign on the dotted line. I said it before. I want to be one of the best in this business and there's many elements involved in this. To even be a blip on the radar, I had to step up to a premiere company. It just so happens that Frontier Grappling Arts is one.
But some may notice that somebody is missing.
Conspicuous by his absence, El Grande Malo is not here. He doesn't even have the balls to sign his contract. And you know, it's funny. I was harboring a good amount of frustration for my good amigo before we won those belts. I kept it inside, took it out on myself. There was a release of that frustration when we finally did win.
For months, I was calling up Malo constantly trying to get him to get back on the horse. Here he is, giving me this sob story about 'oh I want to go to FGA, that's the whole reason I was in LDFC'. I ask him why he's in 3GW, he tells me he wants the tag titles. Every time I asked that, he gave me the same answer and we accomplished that. But when the main thing he wanted was literally handed to him on a silver platter, he bailed. When he didn't sign, I was a thousand shades of pissed off.
To a certain extent, I still am.
We won the tag team titles because I pushed it. I understand why people didn't care about the tag division in 3GW. It was never promoted, never given a scant amount of a chance. That division was a snake that kept eating itself. Nobody cared because there was no momentum and no momentum because nobody cared. I tried to care, but one man doesn't make a division. So there was no choice in the matter but to focus on the matches I was given by Jordan Cain and shine the brightest I could.
And even thirty minutes before match time, El Grande Malo--the real El Grande Malo, the one I had initially teamed with in the first place--came bounding through my doorway with a ton of apologies...I could have turn him away. I could have told him to leave.
A sigh.
PEDRO: But it's fine.
I come into FGA with a clean conscious. I can walk in with my head held high knowing that I did everything I possibly could to make it work. I can walk in as a champion that had earned his place. Most importantly? I'm rolling into the first ever Flashpoint knowing that I am the man that put the Bueno in Bueno Club. That's not ego talking, bee-tee-dubs. That's fact.
Stuff has happened, before and after. I had failed to be Rey del Aire and succeeded at becoming a representative for Mexico. I trained a lot because I have no real life in between matches.
Despite the self-deprecation, Pedro smiles at this.
PEDRO: The best thing I ever did during that time was open up to that angel right in that room. Not only do I have a girlfriend and a confidant, but she’s also one hell of an upgrade whenever it comes to actually being a tag partner.
Suddenly Pedro’s new partner steps into the frame.
MARITZA: I can hear you all the way in there. Who are you talking...oh!
She is startled by the camera staring her in the face.
MARITZA: Well, that's not creepy at all. I have to get use to this being ready to talk at a moment's notice. But one thing I’m ready for is this weekend. And that starts with you ladies. Kimiko and Faye Valentine.
PEDRO: Venom and Viper!
MARITZA: Serpent’s Touch. It's almost bittersweet that we have to face off against you. Two strong, beautiful and fierce women that demand and command respect. In a perfect world, I can see us doing something real positive. But that’s not the case at this point. Because you two have an agenda, as do we and this weekend those agendas collide.
Our opponents are violent. They are vicious. They like to hurt people. Not the ideal first outing for a new team. But the fact of the matter is, I want a fight! I want them to come to the ring snarling and snorting, with spit and snot leaking from their faces. I want them coming to the ring with the mindset that they are going to destroy everything in their path...that way when we beat them in the center of the ring, there will be no denying us.
You see, we are more that just a cute couple holding hands and playing footsie. We are two determined like minded individuals that will do all we can to reach the top. And together, we will do just that.
PEDRO: In the little we've seen of this duo in action--as in those incredibly short clips of them demolishing people I don't know from places questionable at best plus their respectable debuts in FGA--I can see the danger. Faye’s spirit mixed with Kimiko’s serious nature makes the team dynamic flexible which in turn can cause chaos for us. Nevermind the fact that they are trained to...well, beat the everlasting shit out of whoever’s in their path.
MARITZA: Kimiko, the disciplined, tactician. I’m so excited to match skill with you. Whereas many are cautious of your “strong style”, I welcome it. I’m a Muai Thai expert...we invented “strong style”. You think you can match kicks with me?
She points down to signal the camera to get a shot of her massive, sculpted legs.
MARITZA: You think your strong style is stronger than me? I doubt it. And as far as your partner goes. The beautiful Faye Valentine. You seem to be the more violent one of the team.
Not one to be ignored, Pedro taps the camera back up.
PEDRO: She seems more like the type who plays games to me. It doesn’t take much to see how her charms could benefit her in a match with most teams. But I’m a one woman man and the inevitable clash of mindsets make Serpent’s Touch subject to turmoil which I’m not afraid to exploit. As for the punishment they can dish out, we’re not afraid of an ass kicking. So do these two deter us?
A beat.
PEDRO: Not really, no. But there is one thought that bothers me.
He paces.
PEDRO: You can’t talk about Serpent’s Touch without talking about the serpent himself. Julian Tijerina. The Venomous Virtuoso. El Guapo! If I were in his shoes...if two people that I respected--one that trained me and one that I trained--stepped into my new stomping grounds, I’d probably want to be there at ringside for the first match at least. Normally, I wouldn’t feel this is an issue. He’s my amigo. A bit deceptive in his tactics, but honorable to a fault.
MARITZA: Papi, you're gushing.
Gonzales grinds to a halt.
PEDRO: I am, aren't I?
They both pause. Diaz quirks an eyebrow as it to say "is there something you're not telling me?". Pedro with a shrug that translates into "you mean, the whole thing about me having a friend other than our little band of misfits being exciting?". Maritza thinks about this and comes back with a nod that reads "yeah, fair point".
PEDRO: But then! We can’t talk about him without talking about Blake Rogers who just so happens to be in the same building wrestling a match. And when these two are in the same building, they attack each other! Now as a distraction, anyone can take advantage of that which is fine. Maybe I’m over thinking things. But I’d rather not lose because we end up getting caught in the crossfire of that nonsense.
The rapid fire delivery of his ranting stops as he sits back down. There’s silence as he breathes and thinks over and over again. You can see the wheels spin around in his head. Then he violently shakes said head.
PEDRO: No. Screw that. I’m not about to worry about things I can’t control. That’s a waste. Whatever Julian and Blake do is their own business. We know exactly who to aim for.
Maritza puts an arm around Pedro and holds him tight.
MARITZA: Since the first time I walked into the LDFC training facility, I dreamed of being in the FGA. The company that made me love the sport. The road has been hard. I've been injured, I’ve suffered hard losses, but I kept pushing, I kept fighting, and now here I am. And not only that, I’m here with someone who has always been there for me. He has been my rock. And now as his partner, I will be that for him.
PEDRO: This isn’t about friendship. This isn't about love. This isn’t about the Club. This is about this match. One match. Us against them.
They nod.
PEDRO: And we plan on keeping it that way.
She runs over to a bench where she sits down, picks up a bottle of water and takes a drink. Next she grabs a notebook and a pin and starts to jot something down, smiling the whole time. Suddenly someone seated on that same bench speaks.
