“Finally!” Lukas exclaims with an emphatic arm movement, “The mystery partner’s been revealed! The man who’s gonna team with Pedro Gonzales at Showdown in the Sun has made ‘emselves know! An’ it’s…” he gurns, grinding his teeth together before uttering those fateful words, “…El Grandé Malo! An’ I ain’t seen such an obvious plot twist since Verbal Kint turned out to be Keyzer Soze!”
Lukas shakes his head vehemently, as Layla takes over talking for a moment. But not before looking down at the 3GW Tag Team titles that are hung over hers and Lukas’ shoulders. “What Lukas means to say is,” she glances over to her boyfriend who’s doing his best to stay quiet, “some of your accusations and your criticisms, Pedro…”
“You pulled ’em right your ass!” Lukas almost yells. “You’re gonna stand there an’ tell us we done nothin’ to raise the profiles of these belts? Like it’s our fault we only had one match since we won those belts – and we’ll come back to that later, Malo!”
“‘Cause, Pedro, if there’s anyone ‘round these parts who’s devalued these belts, it sure as shit ain’t us. When we stood in front of that camera an’ offered you guys your rematch…” he poses the statement as if it could be a question, “…you didn’t say nothin’! No, you ducked your head an’ hoped we wouldn’t see you over there; you hoped you coulda ditched Malo an’ chased a singles title, amirite?”
“I’m sure he didn’t do that, Lukas,” Layla tries to calm her boyfriend down, “and maybe Pedro just didn’t see us that first time.”
“Yeah, it just took us danglin’ the Polychromatic Lion Attack Squad, or Jaelynn an’ her boyfriend in front of him for Pedro to notice us. Four weeks though, Pedro, that’s how long you took to make up your mind. Four weeks, that’s how long you took to decide these belts were worth chasing again. Four weeks, Pedro! Did the loss at Red Carpet Rumble hit you that hard? Was your pride hurt, is that it? But it ain’t important now,” Lukas shakes his head, “‘cause you’ve got your rematch sorted now. You’ve got your partner back after he finally came in from the cold on the last show.”
“And it was nice getting the chance to team with him on the last show,” Layla states, “to see how he works as a partner, instead of an opponent.”
“No wonder Pedro was thinkin’ ‘bout droppin’ him!” Lukas interjects.
“That’s the disappointing part of the story,” Layla replies, “but we’re not blaming Malo for the loss on Challenge. Any of us could’ve taken the fall that night. But, as it is, we all got an L on our records. It’s just…” she pauses, looking to Lukas for guidance, “…that doesn’t sit right with me.”
“‘Cause I dunno ’bout you two boys,” Lukas takes over again, “but we’re proud tag champs! We go out to that ring an’ make sure the fans are happy, we make sure we have the best damn match we can. An’ we make sure that we walk away as the winners. That’s how we made a splash when we got here to 3GW. That’s how we got these belts, an’ stopped you from becomin’ 3GW tag champs, just like you never became LDFC tag champs. An’ I think I know why…”
“‘Cause Malo don’t give a damn ‘bout you, Pedro. An’ Malo, Pedro don’t give a damn ‘bout you either.” Lukas states. “We got one of you who’d much rather be chasin’ the Fifteen championship, or he’d much rather be in the match for the Paramount title. An’ we got one of you who slinked back here with his tail tucked between his legs ‘cause some company out East went belly up. ’Cause he needed the money, an’ he could just swallow his pride … of Mexico, Maine … an’ let down his ol’ partner one more time.”
“Just like you let us down on the last show, Malo. But don’t you boys worry, none. ‘Cause after we’re done with you we’re gonna make these belts mean something. And you can go do your own thing, leave the tag team action to us, ‘cause we know the Bueno Club ain’t got the legs to keep going. Y’all just need to drop this fake friendship you’ve got going, an’ admit to yourselves that the Bueno Club ain’t ever gonna be a success. Y’all ain’t ever gonna be champions – not tag champions anyway. Not like us…” Lukas slaps the belt on his shoulder before walking off screen, followed close behind by Layla as the scene ends.
