Somewhere Else

”I guess a lot’s happened since we last talked. I didn’t mean to keep you in the dark or anything. Sometimes I forget you’re not… just there anymore. I mean, I don’t know what it’s like in here. So. I won’t act like I do. But I’m going to handle all those things we talked about.”
Jenny sat with the receiver gripped to her ear and her eyes planted on the individual behind the glass before her which looked like it had been stained and yellowed due to age, scratched and cracked from the other side, distorting their view of one another. He stared back at her, silently, listening. With a sigh, Jenny continued.
”You know the girl I told you I was having problems with? The German girl-- the pretty one, Avaset? I asked for a submission match against her at Showdown in the Sun. I figured it would be the best way to shut her up, you know?” A short laugh. ”She hasn’t had the best record here, but it doesn’t humble her any. She still thinks she’s better than me. She still wants to break m…”
The man behind the glass didn’t move. Didn’t bat a lash. Dead silence. As a result, Jenny trailed off, idly drumming a finger against the class before taking a deep breath.
”Please don’t look at me like that. I didn’t forget about you.”
She rubbed at her eyes with the heel of her palm for a moment before bringing the receiver back to her ear and lips.
”I know you have a way to watch it if you really want to. I’m facing Ashley Maldano this week. It’s the last thing I have to do before I face Avaset so-- you know-- it would just make me feel a lot better to know that you were watching. She's not someone new. She's been a champion somewhere else, with a different name, and I just…” Met with silence, Jenny took a breath and finished. ”Just watch. Okay?”
She drummed a finger against the glass again, but he remained stoic. Still. She stood up, gathering her phone and keys off of the table in one hand, still gripping the detention center’s receiver in the other.
”I promise I’ll come visit more.”

Seated in the driver’s seat of her car, perhaps in a parking lot judging by the background visible through the glass, Jenny Knite turns the camera on herself. At several intervals she looks off, outside of the window, and our frames skip ahead several minutes until we finally settle on a moment where she does speak.
”You said you came into 3GW looking to branch out… to gain respect… to eventually become a legend. And that, when I first heard it, sounded so bland and so typical. Somebody else coming to Hollywood because they want to become a legend, and it made me roll my eyes because you talked about the Tag Team Championships… talked about, like, running a division that you aren’t even prepared to participate in. I heard it, and I made a lot of decisions in my head about you, just hearing you.”
She shrugged a little.
”Who am I to do that though? I came to 3GW because I wanted respect from the people I thought forgot about me after I got hurt two years ago. I came to 3GW, not because I wanted to be another wrestler that made their way through Hollywood for whatever reason, but because I wanted to be… a legend. And whether it happened here, or whether it started here, that’s what I wanted. It’s still what I want.
I thought it sounded bland. But we’re not so different.”
A small laugh escaped Jenny’s lips.
”In the meantime, you have a Hollywood Cup qualifier with three other opponents to worry about, and I have Avaset Kaiser in a match that only ends when one of us gives up or taps out. I don’t know if what we do on Thursday Night Challenge can help you prepare for Showdown in the Sun but I plan on showing Avaset exactly what I’m capable of and exactly what’s gonna happen to her in two and a half weeks. I’m not going to doubt you, Ashley… I’m not going take you lightly-- not for a sec. But I am going to find your leg. I will put you in the Calf Slicer. And I will make you tap out.
See you back in Hollywood.”
