You've been hit by
You've been struck by
A smooth criminal
Madison sat on a wooden bench bolted into the tiled floor of the locker room of his training facility. His cell phone was placed with the screen facing upward, syncing with a Bluetooth speaker that was on a shelf in the open locker in front of him. The Alien Ant Farm cover of Michael Jackson's single, Smooth Criminal, continued to play with Madison humming along with the tune while unraveling his hand wraps.
"You're the one, Annie," he muttered while focusing on his hands. He finished unraveling the wraps and threw them into the bottom of the open locker, lifting his head to look at the handheld camera facing him from within the locker. "Fifteen months and you were the one, the only one, to beat me."
"This has been one hell of a week for me: I got to showcase my abilities in an eight person, one night, tournament in Memphis, the FGA committee has granted me a Pride Championship match against Molly Reid at Grapple Kingdom, and I get the opportunity to atone for my failure with a rematch against sweet, Annie Zellor!"
"There isn't a single person on the FGA roster that I'd rather face with a championship match looming than you Annie! In the grand scheme of things, my time in FGA has been pretty short. I don't have a rich history here like some of the names FGA fans have become accustomed to seeing consistently on Vertigo. I've only had a couple of opportunities to claim FGA championship gold as my own. But both times I was given the opportunity, I ran into a roadblock named Annie... With the tag straps on the line, Tommy Knox and I took you and Laurel Anne Hardy to your limits, forcing that partner of yours to snap; an uncontrollable rage that ended with a spear that connected with the official. Knox and I, the Black Hand, won at Capital Combat but you guys left with the straps."
"Then again, the Wildcard Lottery tournament to crown a new FGA World Champion. My second shot at FGA championship gold. Despite the odds, we're paired up as a team and beat Molly Reid and Ruby Tyler in the first round of action. In the second round, one on one, you use a low blow to get the upper hand against me, leaving me vulnerable to the Rough 'N' Tumble II. A low blow that only got you one step further into the tournament before succumbing to Tony Carmine. I have no one else to blame but myself for my missteps. The first go around Knox and I pushed you, tried to break you, telling you that you weren't cut out for this business. Since then you've come out of your shell and embraced a 'win by any means necessary' attitude. Everything I said you weren't, came back to haunt in our singles match..."
"Failure doesn't sit well with me. Watching you in that match with Tony left me with a lot of 'what ifs'. I'm not declaring that I'd have done any better; but that low blow robbed me of the opportunity to find out. Twice I've had a chance to cement myself into FGA history and twice I've failed; twice you've been on the other end of those failures Annie."
Madison bows his head and lets out an exasperated sigh after reflecting on his shortcomings in an FGA ring.
"With Grapple Kingdom about a month away, I wouldn't feel right going into my Pride Championship title opportunity without mixing it up in some fashion with you Annie. History points to some kind of disappointing outcome that'll leave me scratching my head. But to hell with you if you think I'm not itching to have another go at this!"
"I want the FGA Pride championship. After beating Ryan LeCavalier at Final Frontier, I want it so badly that I can taste it. I want to go into Grapple Kingdom and give Molly Reid the toughest fight of her career! But until this merry-go-round of f***ery is settled, I'm not sure I can give her my full attention. Apart of me would be wondering just when you'd find a way to cost me championship gold for a third time."
"In the sense of earning my shot, at least with the committee, I've accomplished that..."
"But a CLEAN win over a former two time FGA World Tag Team Champion, and current two time FGA Mid-Atlantic Legacy Champion, sure would be a confidence boost!"
"That ever elusive CLEAN win that neither of us can boast about... It dangles in front of me like a carrot on a stick!"
"For me, the road to Molly has to be rocky and full of challenges. Hard work and dedication to my craft is what has gotten me to this point. It's what helped put together the best stretch I've ever had throughout my career. And it'll be what ultimately wins me another championship. I can't think of a better way to open Molly's eyes, making her realize what she's up against than beating her best friend in the center of an FGA ring!"
"I'm fully prepared for an all out war. Hopefully the sirens of FGA that proudly call themselves champions don't turn a blind eye to me; it'd be the biggest mistake you ladies could make!"
Madison pauses for a moment as he looks into the camera lens with a calculating stare.
"Just don't blame me if you wake up with a pounding headache with a team of doctors and trainers hovering over you, asking, 'Annie, are you okay? Are you okay, Annie?'."
Madison smirks as the feed fades to black.
