"When I started this quest, I wanted to survive and I became a survivor. When I decided to take it seriously, I became a wrestler. Now I'm on a path that allows me to share either the wealth of victory or the burden of defeat to a good friend of mine."
Pedro Gonzales steps into the spotlight clad in his wrestling gear.
"Being a champion means being the best. But only for a given point in time. Some people, when they finally get their hands on gold, go completely mad. They like to dream that they'll always be the best. Nobody can touch them. The shiny title on their waist will magically erase all their problems and give them the solace they crave. Yet if anybody pays attention, they'd know that's not the case at all.
One can easily look to Frontier Grappling Arts, and the situations therein. Never mind the ego mania 'cause that's everywhere. How about the drunkenness? Getting jailed for drugs? Prostitutes getting beaten the hell out of? Seems like anybody within fifty yards of their world title ends up completely fucked up to some degree. Look at Cyncity. She's went from sweetheart to nightmare after a six second retirement!
It's not the belt's fault. Unless there's some strange mummy's curse which wouldn't surprise me. But it does make you wonder why people who aren't ready to bear the great responsibility keep rising up for the great power."
He nods to us.
"While it is true that the holders can and often do make the titles, it is equally true that the championships also make the champions. To have a championship means that all of your hard work means something, the sleepless nights and constant training wasn't a waste of time, and you belong inbetween those ropes.
All of this is precisely why the Gold Star Connection will not walk out as 3GW's Tag Team Champions."
A beat.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Should I elaborate? Okay.
Everybody's favorite question when it comes to teams is "Who is the weak link?" People love to ask this especially when it comes to Bueno Club. But the truth of the matter is that there is no weak link. At certain moments, one partner can be doing better than than the other. Yet if one looks at the bigger picture, we're evenly matched. Both Malo and I can win our share of matches. We're both solid and always improving when it comes to our skills.
Our opponents are different. There's clearly a weak link to the Connection and her name is Señorita Star. I don't say this out of malice for her or because I'm trying to win a bet."
Pedro shrugs and smiles.
"Though yeah, I do want to win the bet. But again, looking at the bigger picture, it's Señor Gold who carries the lion's share of victories while Señorita Star just...falls short.
But Pedro, you say, they're tag team specialists! They work better together. They do everything as a duo! That makes them indestructible, right?
Wrong. There may be some perks to doing the mattress mambo with somebody you team with. But there's weaknesses as well. In her match against me, Lady Interstellar summoned up her inner Cumberbitch that was supposed to slay dragons. But she couldn't get the job done. She may not have lost but she was far from winning the battle and that is a huuuuuge problem. If you can't stand on your own two feet, how can you hold your share of the weight?
Even worse...say I end up getting a vicious streak and snap either one's limbs like twigs. I can do it fairly easily. If it happened, all the specialty ends up going right out the window along with any chance of winning."
El sigh.
"There's also another point that I've hesitated to say through all this because it sounds so obvious. But it needs to be said.
Even if the Gold Star Connection can overcome their weaknesses, that still doesn't make them more deserving than we are. As much of an ideal couple they are to put on billboards, they don't deserve to be our adversaries for the titles. They haven't been belittled and ignored and pummeled both in 3GW and in its predecessor. Señor Malo and I got ourselves to this dance by pouring blood, sweat, and tears.
All the Gold Star Connection did was concuss a woman and squeal WE'RE DESTINED TO BE THE CHAMPIONS. IT'S IN OUR NAME LOL!"
"Look, I'm not trying to be an asshole here. They are entertaining to watch. There's no doubt there. But championship material?"
Eye roll.
"Red Carpet Rumble, night dos. Bueno Club defies the odds becoming the first Tres-Gee-Dub Tag Team Champions. Somebody's gotta set the standard and there's no duo better."
