Gerrald von Licht was a shrewd businessman who knew exactly how to deal with his daughter, Avaset, when she was down. Upon approach, he wrapped his arms around her. She immediately embraced him back, sobbing.
“Vati,” she whined, “that bitch, Jenny, cost me my first match in 3GW.”
“That why I haven't seen you playing with that stupid App lately. What's it called? Tweeter?”
Avaset rolled her eyes. “I’ve told you a million times, Vati. It’s Twitter.” The frown returned to her face as her record in 3GW had become blemished before it began.
“Did you watch the whole show, though, mein Schatz,” Gerrald inquired with a suggestive smirk on his face. Avaset looked up with a pouty face. Those big, blue eyes of hers focused on him, eagerly awaiting good news as she shook her head. “I pulled some strings und you'll be competing in the Red Carpet Rumble Match.”
Suddenly, Avaset’s eyes sparkled with joy. It was clear in that moment that her father was her hero as she clung to him. He embraced her tightly. “Danke, Vati,” she exclaimed with excitement. “But,” she said as she pulled away from the hug and looked her father in this eyes, “how? I lost my first und only match.”
“Listen, mein Schatz,” he said with a small smile, “just leave the business end of the sport to me und just worry about the sport end. I may have been a world class MMA fighter, but, Avaset, you are the most athletically gifted of any of the von Lichts und I know you can become the first 3GW Paramount Champion provided you put that fluke loss behind you, und look toward the Red Carpet Rumble.”
For a long moment, Avaset just soaked in her father’s words, reveling in the fact that despite any of her cousins’ success: Gauge, Cameron, Sophie, or even Artemis, her father would always take her side no matter what. And, that was an advantage in and of itself. Did Avaset know that? Of course she did. Behind every premier athlete there was a shrewd businessman, and Avaset Kaiser wasn’t any different from any premier athlete in that respect. One thing she did differ with them on though: she was the premier athlete, and they were just a premier athlete. Faces in the crowd just like everyone else in the Red Carpet Rumble. Nobodies who just wanted to be somebody. Well, most of them anyway.
Having noted the change in mood from his daughter, Gerrald gave her a kiss on the cheek then checked his gleaming watch. “Now,” he began, “I must be going. I have a meeting I'm running late for. Auf Wiedersehen, mein Schatz.” Upon walking away, his secretary took one last look back at Mr. von Licht’s daughter, who clearly was in a different state of mind before following his boss out to the car, leaving Avaset alone.
Thoughts of grandeur danced in her head. Her first opportunity at a championship had been handed to her on a silver platter, and she couldn’t have been happier about it. Truth is, Rab McKinley only had one person to thank for his success during her debut match: Jenny Knite. Because had her armbar been locked in completely, there would have been no escape. Rab would have had to tap out or listen to his arm pop out of its socket. Jenny Knite. That name alone vexed Avaset, but she knew that if she were going to become the first 3GW Paramount Champion, she would have to set aside her issues with Jenny Knite at least until it wasn’t a liability during the Red Carpet Rumble match itself. But, how?
Statistically speaking, this match favored those who entered later. Unfortunately, she had no clue when she would be entering so Avaset couldn’t exactly bank on entering last, or even in the middle for that matter. She had to accept that there was even the possibility that she would draw the number that everyone dreaded: number one. She shuddered at the thought, but knew it was a very real possibility.
What the other participants probably wouldn’t account for though is that a match like the Red Carpet Rumble actually favored Avaset. She was a world class gymnast. Endurance, balance, and agility poured from her very being. It would take a miracle to ensure that her two feet touched the floor. After all, The Crown Jewel of the Kaisers had more than a few acrobatic touches she could grace the Red Carpet Rumble with. It would be a night to remember… for her anyway. Motivation suddenly returned to her. First on the plate? Gymnastics practice. Ninja Warrior training? Heh, mere child's play.
