“I blame myself…” Nest stares ahead, sitting on top of his tree.
“…for everything…”
“I’ve heard grumblings, as most have, about the uncertainty of the Den’s future. I suppose when you’re on top dominating for so long, you inadvertently create a glass ceiling…because to you it’s simply a floor.” Nest lowers his head. “Seen many hard workers at the facility only make it up a few rungs. Thoughts of hopelessness begin to hover around the lockers. Self-loathing.”
Nest winks. “I can feel the dark cloud surrounding me whenever I walk into the locker room. Everyone envies, but there’s nothing around to give them any sense of an idea that my spot could be taken. I’m too deeply rooted in this facility. The first man to walk through these doors, I didn’t give a damn about who or how many people came in after. Before this place had any championships, I was still busting my ass, working to be the best.”
“I never needed the crown.” Nest strokes his beard. “That doesn’t mean it didn’t feel good to have it around my waist and Emily Carter knows more than anyone else how much having the APEX Championship means to me…” His voice trails off.
Then Nest starts to chuckle.
“That’s the only reason why she sacrificed having her moment at Bound By Honor to relinquish the belt from her grips. How pretentious? She bestowed the belt on my resting corpse was because she thought that was doing me a favor.” Nest smirks. “Au contraire.” He begins to chuckle. “Because see when that bell rang and our match was declared a draw, it was my world doing you a favor…my universe. The longer the match went on, the more frustrated you would’ve made an already pissed off, frustrated beast. I promise you Emily, the crowd screaming five more minutes only made matters worse. Your relentlessness, and the fact that you made your pity stunt at the end, only provoked me even further…”
Nest wraps his arms around his knees and slowly cradles back and forth. “You didn’t decline our second meeting, so I’ll assume that you’re going to do everything in your power to push me to the edge. After all, you could be Lion’s Den’s last hope of toppling the incumbent beast. As every one of us aimlessly drifts into the unknown of the future, Emily Carter could possibly be the last ever APEX Champion under its current incarnation.”
Nest smiles.
“You’d love that. Even knowing how much this all means to me, you dropped that belt on me because you had to. THERE WASN’T AN OUNCE OF PITY IN YOUR EYES BECAUSE I…looked right in them…” His voice trails off once again. “You did it because you felt safe and secured. From the moment the final bell rang, you and I both knew we’d have to meet again to settle this once and for all. Hence why I missed last week’s Pride. There is nothing more that has to be spelled out for the people. No need to sweeten the juice by adding any unnecessary stipulations. No more questions need to be answered anywhere else but inside of that ring. My Nest. Emily, if it is a fully provoked, uncaged monster that you want I’m happy to oblige. However, I’m afraid you don’t want what’s coming to you. I’m not sure you really understand exactly what it is about you that makes the blood under my skin boil. You respect nothing and no one, but you want respect from everyone.”
Nest laughs. “You think if you keep picking and picking at me that I’m going to finally give you that nod of respect you’ve been desperately seeking. Off of the strength of resilience. Why? Because you were brought up thinking if you asked nicely and played by the rules that you’d get your way. Just as vanilla as everyone else. They taught you morals and THEIR definition of what’s right and what’s wrong. Spent your entire life living by the principles of Disney Channel. Everything about your personality and appearance relates to that image: your life is a sitcom. You may go through bumps on the way, but by the end of that half hour all is always well…Well there my naive one, I will teach you that heroes don’t always win. Those good guys you’ve always looked up to were actors, and the way you acted like you were the bigger person at Bound By Honor was just that: an act. If you want to take the APEX Championship from me the right way; Nest Assured, it’s going to take more than an Emmy nominated performance. It’s going to take dominance.” Nest chuckles menacingly, “…and I win those battles every single time.”
