“Chin up,” he says as he enters the locker room; Peaches looks up to see her boyfriend and tag team partner, Dan Herrera approaching her as she sits on the bench. A look of exhaustion and despair etched on her face as he takes a seat next to her. “We can’t win them all.”
“That’s easy for you to say, Mr. Tag Team Champion,” Peaches sighs; they’ve just lost their first match in 2CW together, with Peaches taking the fall to Cassius Reed. Which, combined with her recent run in LDFC, has her somewhat down. “Some of us ain’t having all that much luck though.”
“I remember that feeling,” Dan comforts her with an arm around the shoulder, “There’s only one way to get rid of it, and we both know what that is.”
“Start winning?” she seeks confirmation on the obvious answer.
“Exactly,” Dan enthuses, “but you’ve got a few more weeks before that happens. And after we beat The Lawsons in two weeks time and make it through to the next round of that tournament, you’ll head back to Greensboro and … have they told you who you’re facing yet?”
There’s a moment of silence as Peaches sighs again, “Prince MacRear,” she answers, finally, less enthusiastically than Dan had hoped.
“That’s not too bad,” he states, confidently.
“That’s sweet of you, babe,” Peaches kisses her boyfriend on the cheek, “but it’s kinda beginning to feel like they’re setting me up to fail; like I debuted against Shintaro Majima, then in a thrown together team to face The Systemic, then the supershow match against Tillman. Now I’m facing Prince MacRear?!” she rubs her face with both hands as she pauses. “The holder of the Carolinas Cup, the guy who’s been one of the biggest names here since it opened, who’s beaten a helluva lot more people than I have…”
“Only in LDFC,” Dan corrects her, “But outside of that? He didn’t get much done in HKW when he was there, and he hasn’t got your experience from Portland Pro, or 2CW.”
“Face it, Dan,” Peaches sighs, “it’s almost a foregone conclusion what’ll happen in two weeks time … do I just gotta aim for that slim chance? Hope he makes the mistake I can take advantage of. Hope he takes too long posing and I can catch him with a roll up or something.”
“Don’t talk like that,” Dan commands her, “You don’t need to rely on him making a mistake or taking too long; you’ve had some tough matches – you said so yourself – but that’s no reason to get down on yourself. The Peaches I know doesn’t get down on herself. The Peaches I know would be raring to go on the next episode of Pride. Ready to face her toughest opponent to date; the man who nearly became the first ever Apex champion if not for the downed referee, one of the only people who has pinned Nest, the man who nearly became a tag champion…” Peaches doesn’t look any more confident as Dan reels off a list of accomplishments for her opponent, “…so when it’s all said and done, she can walk away with her head held high, knowing she’s just beaten the man who’s done so much in LDFC.
The two of them look at each other for a moment; a genuine smile on Dan’s face as he’s trying his best to pick his girlfriend up out of this slump; Peaches looks down for a moment before raising her head again, a wry smile on her lips as she speaks. “That was cheesy!” And she giggles.
“Hey, it got you to smile,” Dan manages to say before Peaches leans across to kiss him,” Now we’ve got two weeks to get those nerves sorted out. So when you step into that ring against Prince MacRear you’re not worried about losing. So you two can go out there and steal the show, make the other matches look like crap compared to what you do in that ring.”
“Umm,” she murmurs, “I’ve seen the other matches on the card – I’ll settle for being able to walk out with a victory. Lets not ask for too much.” She says before inhaling sharply through gritted teeth, and the scene comes to an end.
