Fuck!”
Molly yelled as she whipped a pillow across the room. It flew harmlessly into a wall as she stood up and walked out of the room. Her friend Anna reached over and paused the tape they were watching as she followed along behind Molly. “Easy there Molls,” she called out.
The two of them were rewatching Molly’s match against Annie at All Star Showdown V. They had just seen Molly take complete control of the match, only to watch Annie kick out of three straight pinfall attempts. Then, finally as Molly was setting up for the kick that would win her the match and the title, Annie ducking under it. Then Molly countering Annie’s running attack into a side-slam attempt. But Annie somehow managed to trap Molly in her signature Glitter Stretch. That’s when Molly stormed out of the room. She didn’t need to see what happened next. She had been reliving it in her head every single day since it happened. How could she get so close to winning the title, only to see it taken away by mere inches? “I fucking hate having to watch that again,” she spat out angrily. Part of her felt bad because this was Annie, and Molly understood how much it meant to her and if anyone beat her she was glad that it was Annie. But still, seeing how close she was to victory and her first FGA title reign, it pissed her off knowing that she couldn’t quite get there. “How could I have not seen that coming?! Why didn’t I just kick her in the head when she hit those ropes? I picked her up and practically begged her to lock me in that stretch.”
Anna reached out and squeezed Molly’s shoulder tightly, trying to get her to calm down. “Look Annie’s a great wrestler. There’s no shame in getting caught like that to someone like her.”
“But that’s just it!” Molly exclaimed loudly, “she caught me. It’s not like she set me up for it or hit me with her kick or anything. She just caught me cause I made a stupid mistake. That’s why I’m pissed.”
“But that happens in wrestling all the time. You’ve done it too, remember?” Anna said, attempting to play a bit of devil’s advocate. Molly really loved Anna for her blunt honesty. While she was her friend, Anna wasn’t afraid to tell Molly that she was overreacting, or being an idiot. She didn’t even really care about Annie, but she was going to tell Molly that she lost fair and square. “Making mistakes and capitalizing is just as much a part of wrestling as anything else and you know it.”
“Ugh...you’re right...I know. I just...it’s like...I was this close you know?” Molly held her thumb and index finger as close as she possibly could without touching them. “I had her right where I wanted to and I fucking blew it. Just like I did in SCW.” Molly was referring to her title match in SCW where she very similarly made a mistake that cost her the match and a title. “I just...I know that if I fought Annie again I could beat her.”
“And I’m sure you could too,” Anna replied. “But you didn’t at All Star Showdown. She beat you and it’s important to go back and look at what happened and why she beat you. Because now, if you do get another shot at Annie, you’ll know what mistake to avoid. Losing sucks Molly, I know it. But it’s important to learn from your losses. That’s how you grow.”
Molly knew Anna was right, as usual. She was just angry and frustrated having to see it again and was letting that get the better of her. “I know...just everything was going so well before that. I can actually think about my mom without wanting to kill her. My wrestling felt like it was as good as it’s ever been. I’m feeling more and more confident in myself and then this happens. It just really sucks.”
Anna smiled at Molly. “But this loss doesn’t negate all of that! It’s just one match. You lost, now it’s time to come back stronger than ever. This is just the start for you Molly, ”
Molly smiled back and leaned over to wrap Anna in a big hug. “Thanks Anna. I appreciate it.”
After a few moments, Anna broke the hug. “So how are things with you and your mom anyways?”
Molly sighed. “Well better than they were a month ago. I don’t know, it’s still hard. Like I can’t just forget about the hell she put me through for my entire life. But at the same time, I know how genuinely sorry she is and how hard she’s trying to make things better. So like...I’m just trying to give her a chance I guess. We go out to eat like once a week or go for a walk or something. That’s pretty much all I can handle right now and she understands that. So I guess it’s good. I don’t know, it’s hard to explain.”
“Well that’s good at least, being better than it was. I’m glad,” Anna said, smiling at Molly. “You want to take this outside? Feels like a tanning kind of day,” Anna asked.
“Yesssss,” Molly said excitedly. She was already wearing a bikini and quickly stripped out of her shorts and shirt as Anna followed suit. The two of them walked out into Molly’s backyard and were immediately blasted by the heat. “God damn I’ve lived here how many years and I’m still not used to this,” Molly exclaimed.
“I lived in Canada until I was like twenty-five, you don’t get to say shit about not being used to this heat.”
Molly laughed as they made their way to some lawn chairs near Molly’s pool. The two quickly applied sunscreen as they lay down on the chairs, feeling the sun beat down on them as they lay still and silent for minutes. They could hear the commotion of the public beach behind Molly’s house, but it wasn’t loud enough to be more than white noise. After a while, Anna broke the silence. “So, ready for your match at Vertigo?” she asked.
Molly smiled widely as she thought about it. “Yeah! I am actually,” she said, raising her voice a bit to make sure Anna hears her. “Really the next couple of weeks, with the Lions Cup starting up. I’m going to get a ton of really good solid opponents and matches every week. Like I’ll have to beat Salem next show and then potentially go through people like Johnny Karma and Fujiko and Skylar and Savannah to win my side of the bracket. And then I’d have to beat the winner of the other side of the bracket with Annie and Dom and Chandler. So like, I’ve got my work more than cut out for me if I want to win this thing. So many hugely talented people that I might get to go against which is amazing”
“Damn. You weren’t kidding about talent,” Anna said as she registered each of the names Molly mentioned.
“Yeah I know, but it’s exciting! It’s another chance for me to test myself and prove to myself how good I can really be. So I’m pumped for it.”
Anna smiled as she turned her head to look at Molly more. “And you’ve got the main event next weekend don’t you?”
Molly nodded her head. “Uh huh,” she said. “Me and Salem get to tag against Fujiko and Mark Storm.”
“Man has anyone been in as many matches together as you and Storm have these last few months?” Anna asked somewhat rhetorically.
Molly smiled to herself as she thought about it. “I’m not sure. We have been in a lot of matches together but I don’t mind. He’s a good wrestler and it’s fun to compete against him.”
“Well that’ll be fun then. And you and Salem are close-ish aren’t you?”
“Yeah I’d consider her a friend I think. We don’t really hang out by ourselves a ton but we talk a lot and we have done stuff together when we’re travelling to shows and stuff. Plus getting to tag with her gives me a chance to scout her from up close since we’re gonna be going one on one the next show.”
Anna laughed out loud. “Now that’s the right attitude to have!”
Molly grinned as she turned back so that she was laying on her back again, staring straight up at the cloudless sky. “I think so too. I really want to do well in this tournament. Like not just cause of the title shot I’d get if I won. But just because it’s another chance for me to prove myself against the best of the best and that’s all I ever ask for when it comes to wrestling.”
“Well I’m sure you’re gonna do awesome Molly. Just keep training and don’t get down on yourself. I believe in you!” Anna said with a smile on her face, causing Molly to laugh.
“Well thanks Anna, I appreciate the support.”
The two women lay back down on the lawnchairs and closed their eyes. They lay in silence for what felt like hours, occasionally turning over onto their stomach’s to tan their backs. Eventually, Molly covered her body with a towel to avoid burning and slowly fell asleep.
After a few hours, Molly found herself being woken up by the sound of her sliding door closing behind her. Molly looked over and saw Anna still in her chair, seemingly fast asleep. So who was at the door? Molly sat up in her chair and looked at the door to her house. Her eyes were still adjusting to the light after being asleep for so long. But she could see a woman standing there, smiling as she looked on.
“Well isn’t this a sight for sore eyes.”
Molly recognized the voice instantly. But it couldn’t be, could it? Molly rubbed her eyes to clear them. When she opened them again, she could see clearly. And her suspicions were instantly confirmed.

The screen cuts to a shot of Molly Reid, smiling from what looks like the inside of a house. She makes sure that the camera is on and working before smiling again and beginning to speak.
“Hey everyone! So glad to talk to you all again. I wish I was sitting here with the Mid Atlantic Legacy Championship belt around my waist, but I think you all know what happened there.”
Molly takes a deep breath as she tries to keep composed about her having lost her title match against Annie just a couple of weeks earlier.
“I know it wasn’t quite the result I wanted, but I’m still happy with myself looking back at it. Annie’s a phenomenal wrestler and there really is no shame in losing to her. Plus I gave her one hell of a fight. She even said it herself that I was kicking her butt for pretty much all of it. I would’ve gladly switched shoes with her and gotten my ass kicked and still won, but still. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger right? I was so close so many times to beating her, but she just wouldn’t stay down. Then I made one mistake and she took advantage. I should’ve been smarter, I should’ve just put her away but instead I let her catch me in her Glitter Stretch and I had no choice.”
“But that’s not to take away from Annie at all. She’s an incredible competitor and showed the heart of a champion kicking out of so many of my pin attempts. I’m proud of her and I’ve said before, if I’m gonna lose I’m glad it was to someone like Annie. I think she’s gonna be the Mid Atlantic Legacy Champion for a long, long time.”
“But now we’re on to the future. This week FGA is starting the Frontier Lions Cup, and I’ve got to get ready for yet another big opportunity for me. Win the tournament and you get a world championship shot. Your name would go right alongside some of the FGA greats like Sean Sands and Cordy and Tony Carmine. It’s another way for me to craft out my legacy here in the FGA so I’m not going to let this opportunity go to waste, you can count on that! There are so many big names in the tournament, and it’s so exciting to think that I have the chance to wrestle against some of them. Obviously I have to win and advance to keep wrestling them, but that’s just what I plan on doing! I want to wrestle guys like Dom or Chandler or Johnny Karma, or ladies like Fujiko or Savannah, or even a rematch against Annie. There are so many people I’d love the chance to compete against, so I’ve got a lot of motivation to succeed.”
“I didn’t mention Salem earlier, because I already know I’m facing her! In two weeks we’ve got our qualifying match and I couldn’t be more excited. Salem’s an amazing wrestler and a good friend and I can’t wait to wrestle her. She’s coming off a big win at All Star Showdown and she’s the new number one contender for Annie’s MAL Championship. So needless to say, she’s got a lot going for her, and it’s going to take one hell of an effort to beat her. But I’m not going to talk too much about her now because that’s not my match this week.”
“This week, I actually get to team up with Salem in a tag team main event against Fujiko and Mark Storm. I’m so excited because like I said, Salem is amazing and is on a roll lately. Getting a chance to team up with her is so exciting. She’s someone I consider a friend and so I know she’s going to have my back out there on Saturday night. And I hope she knows that I’ll have her back no matter what. We may be opponents in a couple weeks, but we’re teammates at Vertigo and we’re gonna kick some serious ass!”
“We’ve got our work cut out for us with our opponents this week though. Mark Storm is someone I’m very familiar with. He was my first ever opponent in FGA, and I’ve been in a bunch of matches against him since. I know first hand just what kind of damage he can do in that ring. Even though I’ve been successful against him multiple times, I know how dangerous he is. Everyone saw just how good he can be at All Star Showdown when he beat Savannah Taylor in his match. So I’m going to be ready for an even better Mark Storm than any other time that we’ve wrestled before. He’s going to bring his best and try to get one over on me, but I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
“And then there’s Mark’s partner, Fujiko Mine. Someone I’ve wanted to wrestle against ever since I came into FGA. She’s a phenomenal wrestler, and definitely one of the best in the business. I mean, you all saw All Star Showdown. You watched her beat Johnny Karma and win the FGA Pride Championship. You all saw exactly how good a wrestler she really is. She’s going to come out to this match and prove exactly why she’s the Pride champion. So I need to be ready to handle everything that she can do. But I will be. You can count on that.”
“Some people might say the best thing to do would be to take it easy in this match. It doesn’t really mean anything in regards to the Frontier Lions Cup tournament that we’re all in. Salem, my opponent, will be right there watching, and so why would you want to show her all of your tricks and things you can do in that ring. But that’s not how my mind works. I’ve been ready for a match ever since All Star Showdown ended. Ever since Annie beat me, I’ve wanted to get back in that ring and prove myself again. I hate losing.”
“So this Saturday, I’m getting back in that ring. In the main event of Vertigo. I’ve got so much respect for Mark and Fujiko and I can’t wait to step into that ring with the two of them, with Salem by my side. And once that bell rings, I’m going to be out there doing what I always do. Wrestling my heart out. I know what I’m capable of in that ring, and I won’t let my loss to Annie define my FGA career. I’m going to continue to carve my place in the history of the company, and that continues again this week. So make sure you tune in y’all, it’s going to be a good one!”
