The scene opens to show Rab McKinley on an [association] football pitch, somewhere in Greensboro. Stood beside a set of goal posts, Rab is wearing a pair of white shorts and a replica Scotland football jersey. He smiles politely at the camera, and begins to speak.
‘Awrite there! Me again - I’m still haur. In fact, thes wrestlin' lark is turnin' it tae be easier than Ah expected: two matches intae mah career, an' I’ve got two victories tae mah nam - Ah guess Ah must be a natural at thes, ur somethin'.’
Rab’s polite smile morphs into a wry one.
‘But serioosly, there’s a lot ay hard wark involved, baith inside an' ootside ay th' rin', an' while I’m still only in th' very early stages ay mah career, I’m glad tae hae somethin' tae shaw fur th' effort 'at I’ve pit in sae far. Th' hard wark in th' rin' continues fur me thes week wi' a match against Miles Bishop, when I’ll be aimin' tae complete a hat-trick ay wins tae begin mah career.’
Rab rubs his chin.
‘While Ah joked a moment ur sae ago abit bein' a natural, there’s nae denyin' th' natural athleticism 'at Miles Bishop possesses - his manager, Malcolm Pope, certainly isn’t shy abit tellin' everyone jist hoo guid Bishop is. There’s a fine line atween arrogance an' confidence, an' while th' attitude ay Bishop an' his manager might rub some fowk up th' wrang way, havin' socialised wi' Bishop awa' frae th' trainin' centre, Ah don’t hae a bain tae pick wi' heem. Ah woods though loch tae deflate 'at ego ay his jist a wee bit, an' brin' heem back doon tae earth, by handin' heem a defeat oan Thursday.’
Rab quickly glances at the goal posts.
‘In mah lest match, mah opponent was a bloke who has th' nicknam th' “Lain Wolf” - thes time, Ah hae an opponent who has nae less than three nicknames. There’s one nicknam ay his in particular 'at Ah want tae talk aboot: “The Embodiment ay Perfection.” Now, if Miles Bishop really is th' embodiment ay perfection, supposin' Ah beat heem - an' 'at is, ay coorse, mah aeem - 'en will 'at mean'at I’m better than perfection?’
Rab shrugs nonchalantly.
‘I’ve quickly discovered thaur ur plenty ay fowk in wrestlin' 'at hink they’re perfect - Miles Bishop isnae aloyn oan 'at one. However, I’m ay th' skale ay thooght 'at no-ain is perfect. Ah know I’m nae perfect - Ah know if Ah want tae achieve real success in thes sport, 'at thaur is still plenty fur me tae learn, an' lots ay things fur me tae improve upon. I’m continually workin' tae improve myself, tae try tae be th' best wrestler 'at Ah can be, an' tae try tae gie myself th' best chance ay bein' successful. It's 'at wark ethic 'at has brooght me two wins in mah first two matches, an' it’s 'at wark ethic 'at can brin' me anither win in teo days’ time, against Miles Bishop.’
Rab puts a hand on the post nearest him.
‘As fur givin' myself a nicknam, Ah don’t feel th' need tae hae one. An' Ah definitely don’t want one 'at woods be me braggin' abit who ur whit Ah am - Ah woods raither jist shaw ye aw whit Ah can dae in th' rin', an' 'en lae it tae ye tae come up wi' yer ain opinion abit mah abilities. Ah woods loch tae hink 'at I’ve made a guid impression oan ye aw wi' mah performances sae far, an' Ah hope tae continue wi' 'at oan Thursday, by defeatin' Miles Bishop.’
Rab nods his head.
‘Ah need tae win thes match coz ay mah coosin. It’s 'er birthday oan Thursday, an' sae Ah want tae gie 'er th' gift ay seein' me beat Miles Bishop - admittedly, 'at might nae be th' gift she wants, but if Ah hae mah way, it’s th' gift she’s gonnae get. Mair importantly than it bein' mah coosin’s birthday though, Ah need tae win thes match sae 'at Ah can get one ower oan her: Natalie won th' first two matches ay 'er career, afair losin' 'er third - if Ah can defeat Miles Bishop, tae make it three wins in a raw, I’ll hae family braggin' rights.’
Rab smirks.
‘In two days frae now, when Ah step in th' rin' wi' Miles Bishop, I’ll fin' it first hain jist hoo ready th' bloke 'at calls himself “Prime Time” is fur th' big spotlight; Ah intend tae shaw 'at he still has some way tae go yit. I’ll see ye aw oan Thursday.’
With Rab staring towards the camera, the scene fades to black.
