“Molly!”
Molly smiled as she heard the voice of her friend Anna Stone ring out across the room. Molly stood up from her seat and walked over to Anna, locking her in a tight embrace. “Hey Anna,” Molly said, smiling as she broke the embrace. “Long time no talk.”
“Ugh, you’re telling me,” Anna replied, turning around and walking into her office. Molly followed behind, looking around as she entered inside the spacious room. Anna sat down at her desk as Molly followed suit and sat across from her. “Pretty nice eh?”
“Yeah seriously, this is pretty awesome,” Molly answered, still looking around at the office.
Anna smiled as she too looked around. The two women admired the office for a few moments, before Anna turned back to look at Molly. “So,” she started to ask, “how’ve you been?”
Molly sighed, but then smiled. “I’ve been pretty good I guess. Been travelling a lot so that’s distracted me from anything happening here which is good. And I’ve been doing a ton of wrestling training, more than usual actually.”
“Oh yeah, why’s that?” Anna asked, “the more than usual part, that is”
“So I can break Annie,” Molly replied, straight-faced before breaking into a smile. “No, not actually though, I just really want to beat her. Getting to be a champion in FGA would be a dream. I couldn’t do it in SCW, so I don’t want to let this chance go to waste. Plus, beating Annie means I get bragging rights. Which I KNOW she’d abuse if she beat me so I can’t let that happen.” Molly grimaced as she imagined how she’d never hear the end of it if Annie were to defend her FGA Mid-Atlantic Legacy title against her. That was a vision that Molly did not want to see turn into reality.
Anna shuffled in her seat a bit as she glanced at her computer. “Yeah, you two at least seem to be on better terms than you used to be then eh? No more Annie not telling you things or seeming distant?”
Molly shook her head. “No, honestly I think that was mostly me just overreacting. Making an issue where there was none. With my mom back and other stuff going on, I was just in my own head about shit. I’m actually kind of disappointed in myself that I was doubting Annie even a little bit.” Molly thought about all the times that Annie had listened to her cry about her dad or rage about her mom, or just rant about whatever. Never once did she make up an excuse to not listen to Molly. “She’s always been there for me and listened to me and talked to me about everything. So it was stupid of me to think something was up with that.”
“Meh, it wasn’t stupid,” Anna replied, seemingly deep in thought about the whole situation. “But I think maybe the better thing to have done would’ve just been to ask her about it right? Rather than sit back and brood and overthink yourself to death.”
“Yeah, that’s what I should’ve done in the first place. Oh well, it’s all over now. No more being stupid for Molly.”
Anna smiled at Molly. “But you still want to beat her ass in your match right?”
Molly laughed. “Well I don’t know about beat her ass, but I definitely am pumped to get to wrestle her. I love wrestling my friends, it’s such a challenge because we know each other so well. Like I’ve seen so many of Annie’s matches, and vice versa. We’ve trained together. We know each other so well that it’s going to be hella tough to hide any weaknesses in my game from her. And same goes the other way. So I’m just excited to get in there and tear down the house with her. And hopefully I can do enough to win and take her championship away. Plus it might shut up some of my critics who think I’m too similar to Annie, which is an added bonus.” Molly shook her head as she thought about how many times she had heard that from someone. There was always going to be people who said it, but at least the frequency that she heard it was going down and down.
“People are idiots though if they think that,” Anna said, snapping Molly out of her daze. “Just no brains on them. But anyways, I’ll be pulling for you in that match. Don’t tell anyone I said that though, I don’t think I’m allowed to show favoritism now.” Anna laughed to herself.
Molly laughed along with her. “Yeah come on Commish. You can’t be picking and choosing like that now that you’re in charge.”
Anna was the commissioner of the new lingerie football league that was starting up. Molly thought it was technically called The LFL, but she wasn’t sure if that name was set in stone. It had been put in motion back in December, but only recently did it start becoming public news. Anna used to run IWF and a handful of other companies, so Molly figured her experience and love of football had helped earn her the commissioner's role. So when Molly heard about it, she quickly arranged to purchase one of the teams, the Los Angeles Blackout. And she had also set one up one for Annie as an early Christmas present after she too showed interest. Hence the favoritism comment. “Oh well. This is wrestling, when it comes to football I’m all business.”
“Yeah, yeah. Speaking of which, should we get down to it?” Molly asked. She had come down to Anna’s office to sign some papers in order to finalize her ownership of the Blackout. The season starting date was fast approaching, and they needed to make sure everything was in order.
“Yeah, definitely. Let me grab some of the stuff I need you to sign.”
Anna got up from her chair as Molly leaned back in hers. Not long after Anna had moved out of sight, Molly once again went back to thinking about her upcoming championship match with Annie. She suspected that it would start to take up a lot more of her free time as the match neared. Molly knew she’d overanalyze the hell out of this match, but she didn’t care. She was too excited to care. The thought of becoming the new FGA Mid-Atlantic Legacy Champion was just too amazing. And to get to wrestle her best friend? Even better.

The screen flickers on to a shot of Molly Reid sitting in a chair, smiling into the camera. She’s wearing a baggy sweater and has her hat twisted backwards on her head as she looks around the room for a second, before turning back and looking into the camera.
‘Hey guys! I’m back! Finally right? I didn’t have a match last show, so there just wasn’t really anything for me to talk about. But I also didn’t get a chance to talk about the show before that, where I DID have a match. So excuse me if I have to refresh your memory a little bit as we flashback to almost four weeks ago.”
“I got to wrestle against the Sunshine Scandalous Tony Carmine. Something I’d been looking forward to doing ever since I came to FGA. For so long he treated me with nothing but disrespect, and I had no idea why. He just didn’t like me I guess. So when I finally found out that I was getting a chance at him, I was ecstatic. I could show him personally what it was like to wrestle against me. It was my chance to prove to him that I wasn’t just some below-average wrestler riding off the coattails of my friends. I was going to show him that I was my own person, and that I was not someone to let your guard down against.”
“And well, if y’all remember, I lost that match. But I’m not disappointed by it. Even though I didn’t beat Tony, I think I accomplished everything I set out to do. Even after the match, he conceded that I didn’t suck and actually followed me back on twitter. I think that’s the closest Tony can possibly come to saying that I maybe earned a tiny bit of his respect. Besides, I almost had him beaten! If I had just taken the time to make sure his leg wasn’t that close to the ropes, I would’ve had him. But that’s why he’s the number of contender for the World Championship. All those little things you need to do to be champion, that’s what he does and that’s why he beat me. But there’s no shame in losing to the potential future FGA World Champion. He’s a better wrestler than me right now and I have no problem admitting it. It’s why he’s where he is and why I’m where I am. That doesn’t mean I can’t someday get up to his level and beat him. But at this moment in time, Tony’s a better wrestler than me. And I pushed him to his limit and I almost beat him. So yeah, I’m happy with how the match went.”
Molly smiled as she started to think about her upcoming title match in FGA. It had been over a year since she last competed for any title, and she was unsuccessful then. She really wanted this match to end better than her chances in SCW did.
“And now I’m only two and a bit weeks away from my FGA Mid-Atlantic Legacy Championship match against Annie. I couldn’t be more excited if I tried. I’ve been counting down the days to that match since I beat Nero for the right to wrestling for the title. But before I can start to really really think about that match, I have a match this week that I need to focus on. A match against Sara Cochran.”
“I’m not going to lie, Sara confused the hell out of me at first. I was pretty grateful that she came out after mine and Nero’s match to save us from Izzy’s cheap shot attack. I even thanked her for it. But then the very next show, she went and attacked Nero from behind, the exact same way Izzy did to us. And then she goes on this rant about how the fans never cheered for her until she saved Nero, and that now they didn’t deserve to cheer for her. It was confusing to me, to say the least.”
“Sara, I think your problem is that you cared too much about getting cheered. You said you did all these things, signed autographs, did charity work and everything you’re supposed to do to get cheered, and yet you never did. But that’s the problem. You can’t do those things because you want to get cheered. You do those things because you want to do them, because you enjoy doing them. I love meeting my fans and signing autographs. I don’t do it with the expectation that everyone will like me if I do it. I do it because I genuinely like meeting them and doing things for them. Wrestling fans aren’t stupid like you seem to think they are. They can see right through someone who’s faking something, trying to get a result rather than doing something just because they want to. So for you, people didn’t cheer for you because they knew that you were being disingenuous. They could tell you didn’t really care about doing all those things, but that you did them because ‘that’s what you were supposed to do’. Whereas Nero gets cheered because she doesn’t do things for results, she does things because she wants to. She leaves it all in the ring. So naturally, when you saved us, you got cheered. I’m sure people thought ‘finally, she’s doing something because she wants to, not because she thinks she has to. Nobody told her she needed to come out there and save them, but she did anyways’. That’s why you got cheered. But then your true colors finally showed and you shit all over those fans who had just started to believe in you.”
“But now you don’t have to pretend. Now you can just say what you really want to say and do what you really want to do. That’s the way everyone should be really. So I can respect you for speaking your mind and not pretending. But what I can’t do is respect you for what you’ve done in these past few weeks. Attacking Nero like you did, after the match was over, that’s cowardice at its finest. Then last week you tried to once again attack her when you thought she was defenseless. Only this time, she was ready for you, and you got out of there as quickly as you could because maybe deep down you knew that you didn’t stand a chance. But whatever it was, all I’ve seen you do these past couple of shows is be a coward. And it’s sad. Sad because you have talent and you can wrestle. You don’t need to do any of these sneak attacks and post-match beatdowns. But you do, for whatever reason. Maybe one day you’ll figure out that you don’t need to be a coward to succeed here.”
“See, you can talk all you want about how you deserve to wrestle for the Mid-Atlantic Legacy Championship with Annie and I. But that’s all it is, it’s just talk. You have to actually go out there and earn it. I earned this shot because I worked my ass off for it. I stepped into that ring with whoever I was put up against, and every week I battled and wrestled my ass off. I never once complained about an opponent, I never attacked them before the match, I never tried to cheat, I never did anything other than go in there and wrestle. I don’t need to hide behind anything like that. And that’s why I’m fighting for this title and you’re not. Because I wrestled my way to a shot, and you’re just trying to talk yourself into it. But now’s your chance to prove to everyone that you’re more than just talk. You can step into that ring with me and try to beat me. You don’t have to resort to cheap tricks, or cowardly attacks. You can just step into that ring and go toe-to-toe with me. Beat me, and then maybe others will start to share your sense of entitlement towards a title shot.”
“But you had better know what you’re getting into when you step into that ring. I’m not going to dance around you and look for the easy way out. I’m not going to run away and avoid any wrestling. I’m going to come at you and I’m going to punch you right in the mouth. I’m going to take the fight to you and I’m not going to let up. You won’t be able to talk yourself out of this one. You’re not going to be able to sneak attack me when I’m not ready. You’re going to have to stand there and take everything I throw at you, and then throw it all right back at me. Because that’s what real wrestlers do. If you want to get the recognition that you think you deserve so much, then you need to fight for it. Nothing gets handed to you just because you say it should.”
“On Saturday night, I’m going to do what I always do Sara. I’m going to go down to that ring, I’m going to sit in my corner, I’m going to wait until the referee signals for the bell. And once I hear that ring, I’m going to hit you with everything I possibly can. For all your talk, all the bravado that you have, you’re only going to have one choice in this match. Fight back. Because you’re getting the same Molly Reid that everyone in FGA has gotten. The same Molly Reid that beat Nero Darling, that beat Mark Storm, that was inches away from beating the FGA World Championship number one contender. The same Molly Reid that EARNED a Mid-Atlantic Legacy Championship match at All-Star Showdown V. You’ll be wrestling that Molly Reid. That that’s a Molly Reid that’s hard to beat. I never stop, I never even slow down. I’m just going to keep coming until my hand is raised, or I just can’t move. So if you’re not ready for that Sara, if you think that you’re just going to coast on what you believe to be superior wrestling ability and you don’t think you’re going to have to work your damn ass off for it, then you’re in for one long night. See you Saturday.”

Molly’s eyes fluttered open as she heard her phone beeping and vibrating on her bedside dresser. She rolled over closer to it as it buzzed again.

Molly reached over and grabbed the phone, checking the time before she answered. Three-thirty in the damn morning. Then Molly looked down at the caller name that flashed up. UCLA Medical Center. That was the local Santa Monica hospital. Molly tried to make sense of it as she was still half-asleep. Why was the hospital calling her at this hour? She felt the phone buzz again, and so finally she slid it to answer and held it up to her ear, not even bothering to sit up in bed.
“Hello?” she asked.
“Molly Reid?” the voice on the other end questioned.
“Yeah, that’s me.”
“I’m so sorry Ms. Reid, I know you said that we shouldn’t call you about this but we didn’t know what else to do. She had nobody else.”
Molly suddenly sat up, as everything started to click.
“What’s going on?” Molly asked more directly.
“It’s your mother Ms. Reid. She suffered an overdose of multiple illicit substances earlier this evening. She’s currently in a coma here at the hospital. These may be her last few hours.”
