Child: DADDY!!!
Those words would go on to haunt Hank for the rest of his life. Tossing and turning in his bed, he sat up in a cold sweat, most definitely having a nightmare. Breathing very intensely, he reaches over on the nightstand and grabs his watch to check what time it is.
12:40 a.m.
Normally Hank was still up at this time, drinking at a bar but for some reason: he wasn't feeling very well tonight so he decided to try and get some sleep but as usual, it wouldn't pan out that way. Throwing the covers off of himself, he swings his feet off the side of the bed and sits there with his head placed in his hands. Finally rising to his feet, he stumbles into the bathroom and flips the light on to wash his face with some cool water in hopes that it will help these nightmares go away.
With a creaking sound, he turns the faucet to cold and as the water comes rushing out, he leans down getting a handful of it splashing it on his face which makes him feel better for the time being. Placing his hands on the side of the sink, he looks up into the mirror which causes his mind to race and not in the way that he wanted it to.
Flashback…
Back in 1989, Hank Simmons was just a young man breaking into the business – he only had one year on his resume when tragedy struck and he snapped his spinal cord which rendered him paralyzed for the time being, as well as causing doctors to say that his career was over. Not taking the news too well, Hank spent several months in the hospital which he hated but he also saw it as a blessing for one reason: he fell in love with a young nurse who was by his side every step of the way. As time went on, Hank and this lovely young nurse ended up getting married and when Hank was 25 years old? They had their first child, a beautiful little boy and for the first time since his injury: Hank felt like his life was complete!
Sadly, tragedy struck again when Hank and his loving wife found out that their child, their pride and joy had leukemia at the tender age of two years old. Trying to stay strong for his son, Hank did absolutely everything that he could but it was that one fateful night that stripped everything away from him.
RRRIIIINNNGGG!!! RRRIIIINNNGGG!!!
With the phone ringing and waking him up, Hank pulls his recliner forward and rises to his feet rushing over to the phone just in case it was his wife who was calling.
[- Simmons]: H… Hello?!
[- Guy]: Is this Mr. Hank Simmons?
Arching his brow, he knew that this wasn't his wife but the question that kept running through his mind is: why is some random guy calling him this late at night? Responding, the tone in his voice told it all, he has a really bad feeling in the pit of his stomach.
[- Simmons]: Yes, this is him, may I ask who is calling?
[- Detective Murphy]: This is Detective Ronald Murphy with the San Antonio police department and we have some really bad news for you…
After hearing the tragic news that his wife and two-year-old son was killed in a car accident on their way home from his chemotherapy treatment; it was as if Hank’s entire world ended that day as he fell to his knees, not even hanging the phone up and cried.
Return to the present…
With his hands very firmly gripped onto each side of the porcelain sink, his knuckles were as white as a ghost. Taking in several more very intense breaths, he is shaking violently as that was the day that broke him, that made him an entirely different man – the grumpy old-man who has no filter nor does he care about anybody else's feelings.
SMACK AND CRACK!!!
Letting out a loud scream, he strikes the mirror and shatters it as he no longer likes the man that he has become. Falling down onto the floor, with his knuckles covered in blood, he places his head into his hands and begins to cry, sob even as he misses his wife and child and wishes that he could have said goodbye.
Managing to crawl back into his bedroom, leaving a trail of blood on the floor, he reaches into his nightstand and grabs a large bottle of Jack Daniels. Twisting the top off of it, the only thing he knows how to do now is to drink away the pain which in turn also helps him sleep.
