He rolls onto his back, snoring gently as he continues sleeping soundly. So much so he doesn’t even hear the door to the adjoining room open and close. They booked connecting rooms especially, so as to not risk anybody seeing them sneak into each other’s rooms - who knows who’s roaming the corridors of these Vegas hotels?
A smile crosses her face as she stands there for a second, watching him sleeping. He looks so peaceful when at rest, while maintaining that rugged, handsome charm that’s so appealing to her. Katie pulls up her oversized t-shirt and drops it on the floor at the foot of the bed, before crawling under the covers next to him.
“About time,” he murmurs as he rolls over once again, draping an arm around her shoulders.
“It’s barely midnight,” she jokes, “why are you even in bed?” Not that she’s complaining as she nestles in his arms for the first time in what feels like an eternity. With her constant travelling and their having to be careful about not getting caught by any other LDFC personnel. But now they’re both in Vegas for Annie’s wedding, away from prying eyes and in the privacy of his hotel room.
“I’m old,” he replies, “I can’t stay up all night like when I was your age.” She playfully smacks at his chest as she lays her face atop his heart. He leans down just enough to kiss the top of her head, running his hand lightly over her naked shoulder.
“Your hair smells nice… new shampoo?” He jokingly asks. She giggles, tracing a finger over his abdomen. “I mean it. It smells different since the last time. It’s tropical. Did you get it in one of those far-off places you’ve been travelling to and sending me all of those nude pictures from?” She looks up to see him crack a shit-eating grin a mile wide.
“Detroit isn’t that far away,” she snarks back, “but thank you for noticing; you might get some bonus points for that one--”
“I must be close to getting that something special now,” he interrupts, causing Katie to giggle.
“Very close. Maybe when I get back from Japan, after the RISE show…” their eyes meet for a second; they know they’ll be apart for the best part of a week after the LDFC show on Thursday, “...this time apart feel like too much sometimes. Why can’t we go public?”
“Because I’d get fired,” he states.
“But when I graduate from LDFC or RISE, whichever comes first, and I’m not your student anymore…” the two of them fall silent again; they’ve had this conversation before, and they both know how it goes. “...I’m serious, Chris.”
“I know, but--” he gets interrupted.
“No buts!” she says, sharply. “When I’ve graduated from LDFC I want us to go public - I don’t mind how long it takes, whether it’s the next day or a month later, but I want us to be public. I want us to be exclusive; I promise you that from now on I’m not going to play these games with you, Chris … unless Mercy falls into my bed.”
That comment is met by a curious stare; Bond’s mouth stays slightly agape as he struggles to find the words to express himself.
“What? She’s hot,” Katie defends herself, “but she’s the only one, I promise. No more men, no more sleeping around.” That last encounter with Josh Mitchell left a bad taste in her mouth for more than one reason - she may even have to repair their friendship at some point in the near future. When he’s willing to speak to her again.
Silence descends upon them again as Chris slides closer to his girlfriend, leaning in to kiss her gently on the lips before he speaks. “Do I get a video of that one too?” he whispers; a mischievous grin spreads across his face at the memory of the ‘get well soon’ video Katie made with the help of Molly Reid after Chris suffered his knee injury. The question is enough to elicit a giggle from Katie as she slaps his chest.
“I can’t promise anything,” she replies, “but are you ok with that?”
“Being exclusive?” He pauses. “Sure. You know, this last year we’ve been kind of seeing each other has been … fun. Ups and downs,” they both grimace at the hint of the chlamydia scare, “but I like spending time with you.”
She smiles and blushes, “A year? Has it really?”
“Eleven months so far,” he shrugs, trying to hide the fact he’s remembered the date they first slept together. It was the night he and Jason Bronco Jr. crashed out of the Dynamic Duos tournament when she first made her move. A moment of weakness on his part and they ended up back in his hotel room, fucking all night long before her walk of shame back to her own room in the morning. “What’s brought this on again, though?”
“I dunno … maybe it’s being here,” she smiles up at him, “getting ready to watch my best friend walk down the aisle with the man she loves, it just got me thinking. Made me realize what I want in life--”
“I never had you pegged as the marrying type,” he interjects with a chuckle.
“I could be an honest woman one day,” she says in jest, “with the help of the right man.”
“You’ve been thinking about this?” Chris can’t help but laugh, albeit playfully. If she’s been thinking about settling down with him, marrying him even, then maybe she’s more serious about him than he thought. He’s no stranger to being engaged though, having two failed engagements to his name already. But she’s so much younger than he is.
“Maybe,” the reply is coy, but the blush in her cheeks is unavoidable, “there might have been a moment when I was watching Annie try on her dress that I imagined it was me. And I might have thought about walking down the aisle, and maybe I could see a man’s face waiting for me at the altar … it was either you or Daniel Craig, I can’t quite remember.”
“Well that’s … I’m not sure how to take that,” Bond murmurs.
“Be flattered,” she says before kissing him, “James Bond is a sexy, sexy man, but he’s fictional. And I doubt he’d make an honest woman of me, so it might be up to you.”
“I’m not sure … I’ve never seen myself as the marrying type,” he jokes, and get slapped on the chest for his trouble.
“You’ve been engaged before!” she protests.
“And look how that worked out!” he replies; one ex-fiancée has recently restarted a relationship with the man she started dating after Chris, and the other hasn’t spoken to him in years. There were moments in recent years when he questioned if he’d ever find love again, ever get the chance to settle down and make a real go of things. He obviously has Rhys from his relationship with Syd, but if there’s the chance that maybe he and Katie could settle down and start a family of their own - a little half brother or sister for Rhys - then he’d be a fool not to go for it.
As he looks into her eyes he can see the sincerity behind them; the loving, caring nature that she tries to hide whenever she becomes The Crimson Baroness instead of just Katie Rogers. But as they lie here in his Las Vegas hotel room, when she’s stripped down to her core, he knows this is the girl he’s fallen in love with. So whether it’s dating exclusively, going public when she’s graduated from the training facility, or one day getting engaged and even married … he’ll do it. Because it means getting to spend the rest of his life with this woman before him.
The silence is broken, however, as Chris speaks again. “I love you,” he says before kissing her.
“I love you too,” comes to reply as she pushes him onto his back, that devilish glint in her eyes as she climbs on top.
