“It worked!” Nero squealed into the iPhone she held clenched in one hand. Then her nose wrinkled slightly, “Well, I mean… kinda worked.”
Remy’s voice was like honey dripping through the phone line, thick with that Creole accent she adored. “What’dya mean ‘kinda’, cher? You and Good Golly Miss Molly won. What’s there kinda about that?”
Nero sighed, slumping back against the overstuffed, overplumped hotel pillows. The kind of indulgence that she could get used to. “Well, I mean… kinda because it turns out it wasn’t Mark Storm stealing all our stuff. It was just Danny Diamond being a jerkface.”
“Well, cher, voodoo don’t work with specifics… you put it out there and you get back what you wanted. You wanted to win and that’s what they gave you.”
She sighed softly, curling up and tugging the thick blanket up around her shoulders. “Yeah, but it doesn’t feel good.”
“Will it feel good when you win again against all three of them?”
The line was silent for a minute while she chewed that one over. The win against Mark Storm hadn’t felt like much of a win considering that it was less of a true win and more… Danny Diamond screwing Mark Storm over. When he’d jumped down off of the ropes instead of accepting the tag, he’d guaranteed that she and Molly would win. It was less something that she could be proud of and more… a win that they’d fallen in to.
“I mean, yeah… most of all Mr. Diamond. What he did to Mark wasn’t very nice.”
She frowned at that, full lower lip puckering out. It wasn’t something that she was proud of, being so angry at Mark when it wasn’t his fault at all. “He was exploiting someone’s mental illness for no reason. He wasn’t even mad at Mark or anything, he was just doing it to be mean.”
“Then it sounds like we need to make another trip to see Mama Kay, cher.”
Nero shuddered but she couldn't bring herself to say no. The small, damp wooden shotgun style house on the bayou… with it’s thick incense and the bodies all packed in so tight in the humid heat; the entire experience had been terrifying but she couldn’t deny its effectiveness.
For the first time since she’d signed on the dotted line in FGA she was winning and consistently.
“Maybe,” she conceded.
------------
“What Mr. Diamond did wasn’t very nice,” Nero said, giving the camera a stern look. She was sitting cross-legged on her bed, her Sailor Moon hoodie sagging past her wrists and covering her hands. The room was exactly what most people would expect… a giant Pikachu plush lounging against the pillows and shelves holding her absolute favorite action figures.
Nero tugged her vibrant blue hair up into a ponytail at the crown of her head, she was chewing on her bottom lip. “And I don’t like being made into an idiot, being mad at somebody who didn’t deserve it. I sent flowers and a basket of kittens but I still don’t know if Mr. Storm forgibs me. I was really upset with him and it wasn’t his fault at all.”
Her lips pucker into a pout when she considered that; it wasn’t in her nature to be mean to anyone, even when they deserved it but… it had been humiliating to have her clothes stolen. Like the worst locker room hazing she could have imagined… walking out in nothing but a towel and everything she’d brought to change into was gone. It had forced her to follow Molly out into the hallway, clutching the towel anxiously to her chest.
“I think the worst part is that you didn’t have a reason to do it, Mr. Diamond. Mr. Storm didn’t do anything wrong to you… neither did I or Molly. You were just being a jerk and you picked on us to do it. Did you think we were all easy targets? That just really grinds my gears that you picked us all out and made us act like idiots because… what? Were you bored?”
She scowls now. “I think maybe I’d be a little less upset if you at least had a reason beyond wanting to be a jerkface. I don’t understand meanness for meannesses sake. I just don’t get it.
Was this the outcome that you wanted, Mr. Diamond? All four of us fighting each other? I gotta think that it probably wasn’t because now you got three people who are gonna be standing in the ring and all of ‘em are gonna be gunnin’ for you. It’s time to pay the piper and stuffers.
Last time we were all in the ring together you got the last laugh but now we’re all coming into this with the sole goal of wiping the smirk off your face. I mean, sure… we’re gonna fight each other too but you’re going to be the one with the biggest target on your back.
And like I said, I dun like being made a fool of which means that I want the opportunity to be the one to wipe that smirk right off your face for all three of us.”
She sits back, drawing her knees up and resting her chin on them. Her Sailor Moon hoodie has the words “Fight Like a Girl” emblazoned across the front and it’s obviously a sentiment she feels strongly about. There’s a fire in her eyes that FGA crowds hadn’t seen yet… perhaps those who had watched her progress in KWI would recognize something of their Glorious Leader in her narrowed eyes.
“See, here’s the things guys… I kinda forgot who I was for a little bit. I went through some stuff, y’know? It didn’t help that I’d gotten real lucky when I was in KWI. I was unstoppable. Call it beginner's luck or whatever you wanna call it but whatever it was, I had it. Then life kinda kicked me around a little bit…”
She frowns again, thinking back on Tom’s betrayal and suddenly finding herself a single mother. The months leading up to it had been agonizing and the months after it had been worse. She’d gotten lost somewhere in that haze of pain… it had changed her in ways she was still trying to figure out. It had made her stronger but weaker all at the same time.
“I forgot that I was your GLORIOUS LEADER but I know that all of you didn’t forget. I still see the signs… I see every single post on the fan page… I know that you guys stuck with me even when I wasn’t really with you because I was so lost.
I got lost in all the details and I forgot the most important part… that my NERLLUMINATI believes in me. I needed a little bit to remember that I don’t give a truck about no haters long as my bitches love meeeeeee.”
She sing-songs the last part, a wide grin on her face. She’s talking only to the fans now, not the men and woman that she’ll stand across from in the ring in a few short days. “No one is gonna steal our shine, are they? Whatever happens when it comes down to this fight… you guys are gonna be there with me the whole way… my NEROLLUMINATI. I won’t forget that again and I won’t let you all down again… see, I was under the impression that you guys only loved me when I was winning and I’m sorry for that. I’m sorry I doubted you…”
-----------------
She only woke up when the plane touched down, she’d been knocked out from the moment the wheels had left the ground, her hair mussed around her face and her cheek sticky from where she’d drooled in her sleep. Exhausted hadn’t begun to cover it.
The first thing on her mind, as she’d shuffled like a zombie down the aisle was her Lima Beans. The twins were with her mother but Tom had texted her before she’d taken off and let her know that he was going to pick them up and meet her back at her apartment so that she wouldn’t have to drive all the way down to her mother’s house in Bay Minette to pick them up first.
He’d known she would be tired and she was torn… torn between accepting the gesture for what it was and torn between giving in to that nasty little voice that wondered why he couldn’t have done things like that before things had gotten so bad between them.
As she stepped off the plane, haggard mess that she was, a sudden deafening squeal had made her nearly jump out of her skin. There had been maybe a dozen of them, all with their hair streaked with temporary blue dye and holding up signs. #NEROLLUMINATI read one and ALL HAIL THE GLORIOUS LEADER another one read in teal puffy paint. Her heart hammered against her chest as a huge smile spread across her face. It hadn’t been what she was expecting, not by a long shot… but it had been exactly what she’d needed in a way.
“Do you want us to take you out the back, Ms. Darling?” She wasn’t sure when the security guard had sidled up next to her but she didn’t even have to think before she shook her head no.
“They’re good,” she’d chirped, her feet propelling her towards the small crowd. “Better than good.”
It wasn’t the kind of gathering that she was sure the bigger names garnered whenever they went anywhere but that part of it didn’t matter. What mattered was that they were hers. This little group of girls (and one or two guys) had all sat there at the airport for who knew how long on the vague rumor that she’d be landing here today…
They deserved the selfies and the autographs they’d come here for. Her face would be plastered all over their Facebook and Twitter feeds and while the thought still made her a little uncomfortable, she couldn’t help but appreciate the fact that they cared about her that much. It meant something to these twelve people to meet her and it meant something to her to meet them. Maybe when she needed to the most.
When she’d slogged out of the happy crowd over an hour later, she was exhausted but there was a strange lightness inside of her. The kind of happiness that she couldn’t explain if she had to but it was there. She couldn’t deny that she’d been doubting herself almost constantly. Doubting whether or not she had it in her to keep going… there were times when she thought that maybe she’d just been a flash in the pan in KWI.
Maybe her training had been her one fifteen minutes of greatness and she’d used it all up and now she wouldn’t get another.
But those twelve people, camping out in the airport just to get a glimpse of her face and say that they’d gotten a hug from her… it had been something new and exciting. They were still watching her and they still believed that she had something left inside of her to give the world.
The weight of their believe hung heavy on her shoulders, a responsibility that she couldn’t put down and didn’t want to. She had a responsibility to give them what they wanted… the absolute best show that she could put on.
It reminded her of the whole reason she was doing this.
Another smile slid across her face, stretching cheeks made sore by all of the smiling she’d done for the people who believed in her. This one, though, it was all for her Lima Beans as she shot off a quick text to Tom that she was finally on her way home.
Not even the thought of her ex could dampen the smile on her lips.
She’d gotten back in the ring because even though it meant time away from the twins, it gave them something to be proud of her for. True, they wouldn’t appreciate it now but they would when they were older, she was absolutely sure of that. Maybe one day they’d watch old YouTube videos with their friends and say proudly ‘That’s my mama.’
Or maybe, they’d be embarrassed by her.
But either way she would have shown them that dreams are possible, that doing things to live up to those dreams are possible. She would have shown them that they shouldn’t give up on the things that matter to them no matter how hard and impossible they seem.
She shot off a second text before she started the car, this one to Remy. ‘I’ll go back to Mama Kay’s with you.’ Maybe it was just sheer determination or luck or strength of will or a combination of all of that but… could she really take that chance? Could she assume that everything she’d accomplished in the past month had been her doing and hers alone or… if there was even the slightest chance that Mama Kay had influenced something in her favor… well, she had to go back.
It was a long haul from the airport to the apartment she shared with her babies. A straight shot but a long haul and it gave her mind time to wander, whether she wanted it to or not. She definitely didn’t want it to because it seemed like every time it did, her thoughts when right to Tom.
She still couldn’t really say what was going on there… it was a mess of him apologizing and the gestures that she wanted to say came too little too late except for the way that they wormed their way inside of her and warmed whatever places she’d managed to turn to ice for him.
In those months after he’d told her that he’d slept with Ellie she’d worked long and hard to harden the soft places that had once been full up to bursting with love for him. He was the only man she’d ever been in love with, the man she’d given her virginity to and the man whose babies she loved. But she’d worked hard to ice those pieces of herself over, to turn them into something hard and cold and unforgiving.
But every time he came over to watch the kids and she would find her favorite flavor of cashew milk ice cream in the freezer after he’d left… every time he texted her something sweet that let her know he was thinking about her… every time it thawed those places a little bit more.
She couldn’t help it, though part of her still wanted to stay that frozen girl. The one who he couldn’t affect, the one that he couldn’t hurt. It was safer to stay that girl but at the same time… almost every time she saw him she couldn’t help but let him draw her into bed. He’d spent the night only once because they’d both agreed it would be too confusing for the twins if they woke up to him there.
At four, they were starting to become tiny people with their own personalities but she knew that they weren’t old enough to understand this by any stretch of the imagination. She wasn’t even sure she was old enough to understand it.
And there wasn’t really anyone that she could talk to about it. Her mom and Jaxie would be dead set on anything happening between them again because those two women carried a grudge like no one else she’d ever met.
---------------
“I guess… I guess I just… got knocked down. And I forgot how to stand back up for a minute.”
She thinks about this for a minute… it was true in more ways than one. She’d been knocked down personally and then she’d been knocked down professionally. The Nero she’d thought that she was would have gotten back up, bounced right off of the ground and gone and did the damn thing.
This girl she’d become though, only knew how to stay on the ground.
“I forgot that I’m not the kind of person who gets knocked down and stays there. When I’m knocked down I get right back up and I stand up taller than Godzilla, smashing the crap out of Tokyo.
Danny, Mark, Molly… no matter what happens in this match, I’m going into it like Godzilla. I’m a mothertrucking monster and you’re little Tokyo people running around so that I don’t squish you with my gigantic feet. But this isn’t something you can run from… I’m Godzilla and I’m angry and I’m hungry and I’m going to smash up your village until it’s just adorable little village pieces.”
She nods to herself, as though affirming her new plan of action. “But… y’know… only after all the sweet, adorable, fuzzy kittens and puppies escape. I don’t wanna smush them up. I like them. I like you too Molly and Mr. Storm… but I’ve learned enough from the people around me to know that you can’t let liking someone stop you from doing what you gotta do. And what I gotta do is win this match but I think the good thing is that no matter what, if one of us wins we’re winning for all three of us. We’re all going in it to win it but more than that, we all wanna make Danny Diamond pay for what he did. He made us look stupid and I dunno about y’all but I don’t like being made to look stupid.
Danny Diamond is a coward who did what he did because he thought he wouldn’t have to pay for it but he’s a chicken and I’ve never seen a chicken fly.”
She smiles into the camera. “YOUR GLORIOUS LEADER IS GLORIOUS ONCE AGAIN, FGA. THIS HUSTLE DON’T STOP!”
Remy’s voice was like honey dripping through the phone line, thick with that Creole accent she adored. “What’dya mean ‘kinda’, cher? You and Good Golly Miss Molly won. What’s there kinda about that?”
