Greensboro, NC
Off-Cam
(Our scene opens up to the outside of Ozzie’s Ice Cream in Greensboro, NC. Ozzie’s is home to many delicious flavors, including Cappuccino Crunch, Key Lie Pie, Moose Tracks and Oatmeal Cookie. The quaint little ice cream shop has been winning over many of the locals since it opened its doors in 2014. Sitting outside on one of the many white park benches sprawled across the grass are Emily Carter and Josh Mitchell. Emily is enjoying her two scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream while Josh seems to be enjoying a couple of scoops of toffee caramel. The scene picks up in mid-conversation)
Emily Carter: So, what do you think? Pretty good, huh?
Josh Mitchell: Amazing! It’s so creamy! You definitely weren’t exaggerating about it.
Emily Carter: It’s some of the best ice cream I’ve ever had. Some of my friends who used to be in Lion’s Den told me about this place. This was our hangout of sorts from last Summer.
(Emily reminisces, thinking about her friends Donnie Cross and Bree Nelson. Josh, not quite wanting to interrupt his partner’s reminiscing, indulges in some expert level navel gazing. After an awkward couple of moments, he pipes up.)
Josh Mitchell: Greensboro’s always had nice little places like this, ever since I was a kid.
(He smiles as he looks about the grass.)
Josh Mitchell: I used to come up here all the before… back when I was in school.
Emily Carter: Yeah, McLeansville isn’t that far from Greensboro, right?
Josh Mitchell: 20 minute drive? Not too bad really. Means I can live at home whilst I train here. I think my mom would freak if I tried moving out.
Emily Carter: Yeah, I can understand that. All Moms worry when their children move out for the first time. I know mine did.
Josh Mitchell: I can imagine. Mom’s… she’s a little over protective at times. My sisters too, to be fair. It’s ok though. And hey, living rent free is a big plus.
(He chuckles.)
Emily Carter: Rent free? Yeah, that’s a good deal you got there.
(Emily chuckles.)
Emily Carter: So... how does it feel after having a few weeks under your belt? Lion’s Den, I mean.
(Emily asks. She knows those first few weeks can be rough. It’s one thing to come into LDFC with a name. But she knows first-hand how intimidating those first few weeks can be when you're coming in with zero prior experience.)
Josh Mitchell: It’s getting better, I think. I mean, every day brings a new ache or pain, but I’m not as tired any more, so that’s got to be something, right?
(He half smiles.)
Josh Mitchell: I think the hardest thing is how lonely it is. I know how everybody thinks I’m joking about how it’s just like high school… but it really is. Everyone’s in their little cliques and groups… and then there I am in the middle… the new kid. Everyone’s so… insular. I thought... well, I don’t know what I thought. It’s almost like everybody’s scared that being friendly is a sign of weakness or something. Well… most people.
(He smiles at her.)
Emily Carter: Yeah, it can definitely get catty. And I can’t lie. I sometimes allow myself to get pulled into it, too…
(She says with a disappointed sigh. She knows good and well to avoid those all too familiar traps from a certain someone.)
Emily Carter: There are a couple of people that are very standoffish. But that’s their thing, I guess.
(She says with a shrug).
Emily Carter: But some of us actually don’t mind befriending or helping out the new people to show them the ropes. There are some pretty cool people here.
Josh Mitchell: Well yeah. Like Annie… although I guess she’s not really “here”, as such. And you of course. Even K-... um, the Baroness. You’ve all helped me put so much. And I don’t mean to sound unappreciative of that help… I really am grateful for all of it.
(Emily half smiles)
Emily Carter: Of course… Katie … how could I forget.
(Emily lets out a low sigh. Her mouth curls as she looks down and stirs the little that remains of her ice cream. Josh senses her… disappointment? He looks down to his foot, avoiding her gaze.)
Josh Mitchell: Look… I know you two don’t get along… for whatever reason… but what if she has changed? She’s been really nice to me, and helpful too.
(He sighs.)
Josh Mitchell: It’s just... Being here… it’s been hard. Real hard. I… I don’t want to lose friends over this. I like you Emily…
(He pauses, maybe a moment too long.)
Josh Mitchell: You're fun… and…
(He sighs.)
Josh Mitchell: I… I don’t have many friends. I can’t afford to lose any more of them.
(He shuffles in his prosthetic, repositioning it. Emily tilts her head and delivers a half smile. There’s a part of her that wants to reach across the bench and shake some sense into him. But at the same time, she understands what Josh is going through. He’s already got the “new guy” label attached to him. He feels like the odd man out. She knows that he genuinely cherishes the friendships that he’s made thus far, even if one of them is with Katie.)
Emily Carter: Josh…
(She pauses as she tries to best frame what she wants to say.)
Emily Carter: … I understand where you’re coming from. Do I believe she’s changed? I think you already know my answer. And because I feel bad after what happened last night with you getting dragged into that mess, I’m not gonna try and convince you that she has or hasn’t. Her actions going forward will say everything that needs to be said. I’m also not gonna draw any lines in the sand. If you want to be cool her? Fine by me. I can even get why you’d accept her offer to help you train. She is pretty successful…
(“And a day doesn’t go by where she doesn’t flaunt that success in everyone’s face,” she thinks to herself)
Emily Carter: … but just be careful, okay? That’s all I ask. I’ve only known you for a couple of weeks and you seem like a pretty cool guy. I just don’t want to see another one of the good guys get hurt. That’s all.
(His gaze remains locked onto his prosthetic. He fiddles with it a little, the distraction a feint so he doesn’t have to see the disappointment in her eyes: he can already feel it in her voice.)
Josh Mitchell: I will… Yeah.
(He leans back. The pair sit in silence a while. He desperately looks for any excuse not to glance in her direction.)
Josh Mitchell: So… you think I’m one of the good guys, eh?
(Emily nods)
Emily Carter: Yeah, you seem like a pretty stand up guy to me.
Josh Mitchell: Hey, I could be a bad guy! Quarterback of the football team… I think I once returned a library book late? Oh, and I park in Handicap spaces, like, all the time.
(He laughs. Emily joins in with the laughter as she covers her mouth.)
Emily Carter: Well, I guess we’re just gonna have to keep our eyes on you, now aren’t we?
(Emily chuckles)
Josh Mitchell: Well… if you’re sure that’s necessary. I have to warn you though… I’m pretty quick for a guy with one leg.
Emily Carter: Well hopefully you’re too quick for Tillman next week.
(Josh rubs the back of his head awkwardly.)
Josh Mitchell: Oh I don’t know. I mean… if I could beat Terrence… that’d be huge! But let’s be honest, I’m just working damage limitation here.
Emily Carter: Well I know one thing. There’s gonna be a building full of people that are gonna be rooting for you.
Josh Mitchell: Well, maybe. I don’t know though, Terrence is a pretty popular guy… but hey, a guy can dream, right?
(Josh checks his watch.)
Josh Mitchell: Oh, wow, is that the time? Look, Emily, I’m sorry, I need to get in some groceries for my mom before I head home… but thanks. This has been nice.
(He smiles again.)
Emily Carter: Yeah, it has. I’ll see you around at some point next week?
(An empathic nod from Josh.)
Josh Mitchell: Oh, that’s right… you’re going to England again, right? You guys absolutely killed it last week. I’m going to see if I can get some people over to watch it live.
Emily Carter: Thanks, Josh. We’re gonna try and kill it again next week. But I know it only gets tougher from here.
(He gets upright, using the arm of the bench to steady himself.)
Emily Carter: I think I’m just gonna sit here and finish this up… if that’s okay?
Josh Mitchell: Of course. I’d stick around myself if I didn’t have a shopping list that rivals the Bill of Rights in my pocket. You look after yourself, and have a nice flight. I’ll see you next week.
(He smiles at her, before slowly walking away, hobbling a little until his leg settles.)
