“You do?” she exclaims in surprise, “What’s her name?”
“It’s Katie,” the toddler says as he continues trying to make a car from his Lego creative brick box set.
“Well that’s a pretty name,” she says before giggling. She may not like it when her fellow wrestlers call her Katie, but that doesn’t mean she dislikes her own name. “Come on, Rhys, you have to tell me about her…” she nudges the child playfully on the arm.
Rhys shakes his head, though. “No,” he says, “you’ll make fun of me.”
Katie gasps in faux shock. “I wouldn’t make fun of you, Rhys.”
“But you make fun of everybody…” he replies, causing Katie to roll her eyes. “...I’ve seen you do it when Daddy lets me watch the wrestling shows. He says you’re not really that mean though.”
“I’m not.” Katie says, pouting all the while. “Plus you’re my friend, so I wouldn’t make fun of you.”
“Do you promise?” the toddler stops playing with his Lego long enough to stare up at Katie with his big blue eyes. As cute as that may be, it’s made even more so by Rhys’ struggle to correctly pronounce an r sound, making it sound like ‘pwomise’.
Which is enough to cause Katie to giggle again. She recomposes herself before replying, “I promise. Now, come on, tell me about your girlfriend.”
“Well…” he starts, but gets interrupted by the sound of the front door opening and closing. “...Daddy!” Rhys shouts out as he runs out of the living room, leaving Katie sitting alone on the floor with a pile of half-built Lego in front of her.
“You go set the table, Rhys, we’ll be right through with dinner.” Chris says from the hallway as the sound of scampering little feet heading towards the kitchen can be heard. Bond pops his head around the living room door, seeing Katie sitting there with a smile on her face. “Pizza’s here.”
“I’ll be right through.” she replies, examining the half-built car Rhys was working on moments earlier.
“Nice car,” Chris snarks, “I thought you’d use more pink though.”
Katie replies only by holding up a windmill, made with pink bricks. “You got me. Rhys was making this one while he was about to tell me about his girlfriend.”
“Girlfriend?!” Chris says in surprise. “He’s five, how does he have a girlfriend?”
“He’s a looker like his daddy?” Katie offers; her tone is playful, though. She gets up off the floor and makes her way over to the door where Chris is still standing. A quick kiss on the lips before she slips her hands around his waist. “Hopefully he has better luck with his exes though…”
“Is this about Syd?” He replies instinctively; Bond’s ex, and Rhys’ mother, Sydney LaRoux has recently re-emerged after her death was announced nearly two years ago. He’s never spoken about her that much, especially not to Katie. But Dom has answered Katie’s questions as best as he could, which didn’t do much to assuage Katie’s doubts.
“Maybe…” Katie whispers in reply, averting her gaze momentarily.
“Katie,” he starts before fumbling for words, “Listen. You don’t have to be worried about...her.” Chris checks over his shoulder to make sure Rhys is out of earshot; that’s not a conversation he’s ready to have with his son just yet. Fortunately the kid is still busy setting the table, or is already helping himself to one of the pizzas without waiting for the adults. Probably the latter. “It’s been four years since we were together, It’s taken a lot… but I’ve moved on since then.”
“I know, but…” she pauses, sighing softly. Chris stops her, her eyes darting from his and causing him to move her gaze back to his. He leans in real close and looks her dead in the eyes.
“I’m allowed to see other women, remember?” Chris jokes, trying to lighten the mood. Katie isn’t nearly as amused… she elbows him in the stomach. He lets out a large exhale and laughs. She turns away from him.
“Daddy! I’ve finished setting the table!” Rhys yells out from the other room.
“We’ll be there in a sec, buddy.” Chris answers back, before placing a hand on her arm and pulling her to face him once again. “Whatever she and I had is ancient history now. She’s had two other guys since then, and three more children. I’m reasonably certain she’s over me…” Chris pauses, taking Katie’s face tenderly in his hands to make sure he’s looking in her eyes. A moment of silence before he places a soft kiss against her lips. “...and I’ve found someone better.”
“You…” she blushes as she answers.
“And someone even more beautiful,” he continues, placing another kiss against her lips.
“And funny,” he leans in for another soft kiss.
“And smart,” he drops another kiss against her lips.
“And sexy…” he continues with the cutesy-adjectives and the quick kisses.
“Stooooop…” she says with a giggle. Katie knows she’s a far cry from Syd; she’s a buxom, tattooed babe by most men’s standards. The SCCW and Revival fans always revered her as the hottest woman wrestling in either promotion at the time. Compare that to the matchstick figure Katie has - and the comments people continuously make about her chest and ass, or lack thereof - and you can see why she might be feeling insecure. “...am I being silly?”
“Maybe a little bit,” he shrugs, “but you’re allowed to be, Babe. And don’t you dare say anything about your ass or your boobs. You know I like them… A LOT.” He quips back with a smirk.
“It’s just; I’ve heard stories about how people in wrestling die and come back,” she says as if that’s nothing out of the ordinary, “but this is the first time I’ve seen it happen. And with how much she means to you…”
“Meant. She meant to me.” Chris corrects her. “Past tense.”
“Daddy, the pizza's getting cold!” Rhys yells out from the other room.
“We’ll be there in a second, Rhys.” Chris answers his son. “I won’t lie; I loved her… a lot. Way too much for my own good back when we were together. But like I said, that was four years ago and I’m…” he pauses, “...I’m over her. I’ve moved on to the Baroness!” He pauses for a moment and places his hand gingerly against her cheek. “Whatever we felt for each other is no more. It’s ceased to be.”
“Expired and gone to meet it’s maker?” Katie adds, drawing a smile from the both of them.
“It’s a stiff, devoid of life, it resting in peace. It is an ex-relationship,” Bond replies lightheartedly. “It’s you I like, who I’m risking my job for. It’s you who could cost me my career here. And I’m more than fine with that, Katie. You’re the biggest risk I’ve got in my life… and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
“I like you too,” she whispers before kissing him again, “I really do. Which reminds me, Annie might be sending you an invite to her wedding in May, because you being my plus one might arouse suspicion.”
“She’s getting married?!” he asks in shock.
Katie nods. “And you get to leave with the hottest bridesmaid there. You, me, a hotel room in Vegas away from prying eyes. What do you say?”
“A dirty weekend away?” Chris asks, eyes full of thought and lust.
“Well, midweek break.” comes the reply.
“Daddy!” Rhys yells out again.
“We better go get some pizza before it gets cold…and all gone,” Chris says, wrapping an arm around Katie’s shoulder as they walk to the dining room. “...and I’d be more than happy to be your date to the wedding.”
“It’s Katie,” the toddler says as he continues trying to make a car from his Lego creative brick box set.
