Camellia and Marie are sitting in front of a pair of vanity mirrors. The ladies are chatting quietly as they add some last minute touches to their hair and make-up.
Cami: Marie, you cannot be serious! She really said that?!?
Cami looks at her best friend, shocked, as Marie tries in vain to smother her giggles behind her hand.
Marie: I know, I couldn’t believe it either! But you know how Mama is...she believes in the rules. For everyone. except herself.
The girls giggle at the temerity of Marie’s mom. Composing herself, Marie stares into the mirror silently, contemplating her words.
Marie: I must admit, I am actually a tad surprised to see you here Cami. I know you have that major tag team match in Boston in a few days. With the way you’ve been training lately, I figured that you would be smacking the mat or something, instead of being here.
Cami smiles brightly into the mirror, although the smile is a bit false, if one were to look close enough.
Cami: Oh Marie, where else would I be! You know this is the big event of the year and everyone who is anyone will be here! Why, I made sure to pick out this dress extra special just for the occasion.
Broadly sweeping her arm down the black silk sheath Cami lazily turns her chair in a small circle. The elegant dress has a deep V neckline in the front and leaves her back completely bare. Marie glances at Cami, her brow furrowed as she worries about her friend.
Marie: Camellia Daphne, you can lie to your mama and you can lie to yourself. But do not lie to me; I’ve known you too long not to read between the lines.
Quietly, subdued by Marie’s outburst, Cami speaks.
Cami: You’re right. Of course you’re right. It’s just...this event is so important to my mama. The committee elected that she should organize the first Gala of the year, and she spent so much time going over everything. According to her, I’m the worst daughter in the world; I spent so much time practicing and training that I did nothing to help her. Sometimes, I think she wishes that you were her daughter and not me…
Marie: Sweetie, you know that isn’t true! She loves you; she just doesn’t quite understand your passion for wrestling. I’m not sure that she ever will.
Cami: Yeah, you are probably right. Regardless, mama made the decree that I must attend tonight. Even though it’s on the other side of the world from where I want to be. Even though I do have that important match this weekend. Even though I don’t have any particular desire to be here. It just...seemed easier to agree with my mother than to argue. Again. Plus, I get to wear this wicked dress!
The last bit is said with an evil grin towards Marie. Laughing, she can only shake her head ruefully, knowing Cami chose that dress as a dig towards her mom.
Marie: Well, at least if you’re here, you won’t be obsessing over your match.
Cami: Me, obsess? No...that would never happen! Besides, it’s not like I have all that much to worry about anyways.
Marie: What do you mean? You told me this was an important match, some sort of a contest or tournament to maybe earn a title?
Cami: Oh, it is. And my partner and I need to win it; no, my partner and I will win in. The thing is our oppenents are lacking, at least in the competitive aspect. Take Luke Jackson for example. I’m sure that Luke has some skill in the ring. In fact, he did pretty decent in his last tag match, when Salem and I faced him and Chris Bond.
The problem is, he is has abysmal taste in tag team partners. Last time, he was partnered with Chris Bond, a washed up nobody that maybe was relevant when I first joined Frontier Grappling Arts. Now though, Chris is as stale as toast left out too long. One would think that the poor boy would have learned his lesson from his last match. But no, the incompetence keeps on coming. He could have selected anyone from the plethora of tried and true wrestlers on the FGA roster. But no, he partnered himself with Ricky Valero, an unknown, unwanted, unloved nobody from God knows where.
Marie: That seems just a touch harsh, don’t you think? Luke has no more control over his partner’s action than you do over yours. You could have just as easily been in the same situation. And just because he’s new doesn’t mean that Ricky isn’t a good partner...
Cami: True, true. Gross lack of judgement should not equal incompetence. That comes solely from his inability to carry his team to victory. Even with a lackwit partner, Luke should have been able to use his greater skill and intelligence to win, but he wasn’t able to. Sadly, I expect much the same outcome this time around. A failure is a failure and always will be.
I really don’t hold out much hope for Ricky. I know, I know. I shouldn’t judge someone until I’ve met them, faced them in the ring. But, well, from everything I’ve heard, he just really isn’t that good. I fear that he is a bit like Bond, a washed up has-been who is trying to re-make a name for himself. Oh, I’m sure he’s coming here to “continue his greatness” that he’s already achieved. Maybe that truly is his plan. The only flaw to that is, you need to have achieved something epic in order to continue it. Not just join a company as a last ditch effort to make a name for yourself. I predict that he’ll get crushed in a few matches and leave again. Disappointed, but utterly convinced that the fault lay not with him, but with others. So he’ll move on to a different company, hoping to find that greatness only to fail yet again. He will last just long enough to participate in a few matches and rack up the losses. Sad but true.
Marie turns sideways to stare at Cami, aghast at her cruel dismissal of her opponents. Oblivious to Marie’s distress Cami continues discussing her upcoming match.
Cami: I do hold out more hope for my partner though. She is a semi-decent wrestler and should be able to pull her own weight. Her personality, however, leaves a lot to be desired. As much as I want to win this match, I can’t imagine be saddled with someone who is such an unmitigated bitch. What makes it even more ironic: everyone thinks that she is all syrupy sweet and a nice person. There is nothing I hate more than someone being false, it’s worse than someone being legitimately mean. At least with the latter you know where you stand with them.
Be that as it may, I plan to win. It doesn’t matter if Yun gets the pin or if I do; it is only important that Luke and Ricky and left bruised and broken, unable to get up when we are done with them. I refuse to let anything stand in the way of victory, even if that means protecting my partner from getting pinned at any cost. I will do anything to make sure that the outcome goes that way I want. Anything...
Abruptly sliding from her chair, Cami spins in a circle, causing her dress to flare slightly. Looking over her shoulder, Cami smiles brightly at Marie.
Cami: All set! Come on Marie, let’s drink, party and have some fun before my real work begins!
Cami: Marie, you cannot be serious! She really said that?!?
