I love reading those spiritual books, lately I’ve been reading up on a few Japanese Koan stories and practises. There was one statement really struck a chord with me.
“Great Doubt, Great Awakening; small doubt, small awakening; no doubt, no awakening.”.
I have to admit, in my mind there was doubts about where I stand in my wrestling career. I’ve had four matches in total so far, and the pressure is on to be seen as something was becoming apparent. Am I just the token hot girl who is getting by her looks? I really don’t want that to happen, and I can’t allow to to happen. It’s just - I’ve always wanted to be seen as nice girl, following by the rules and just doing what I see is right. But maybe, it’s just not enough for me - Not enough for me as a character in wrestling.
I didn’t want to be branded with a gimmick that wasn’t me, but I needed to think outside the box from what has already been done in wrestling. Which is hard, since the world of wrestling has been around for so many decades. Women in wrestling have finally getting that recognition in the past 15 years or so and just being the ‘hot girl’ was so passee. So this is where my doubt comes in - who exactly is Mercy Williams in LDFC and in wrestling in general?
I can’t sit and wait for this awakening, I had to just keep on moving forward.
Mercy had arrived in the studio apartment of her mentor, Delta Madison’s in Torrance, California. Mercy thought it was nice to come down to California and just get a small break from her training in North Carolina. The blonde picked up two glasses of white wine from her kitchen, placing one in front of Mercy who was sitting on the couch.
“Thanks.” Mercy took a sip of the wine, placing it down on the coffee table in front of her.
“So what’s on your mind? I can see it through your face.” Delta softly smiled, sitting next to Mercy on the couch.
“Am I that obvious?” Mercy lightly laughed. “Training is going alright, but I’m just questioning a lot of things about my career as a whole.”
“Look, you’re still relatively new to this wrestling, so this is normal. Do you think I picked up everything from a drop of a hat when I first started?” Delta shook her head, having a flashback of her rookie year in wrestling back in 2003.
“Well… I guess so.” Mercy hesitated,
“Let me tell you how I started off. Believe it or not, I had black hair, wore fishnets and passed myself as a punk bitch because I thought that would make me all badass a cool. Embarrassing, right? But it all comes down to development. If you look back in history, the big names you see in wrestling didn’t become great overnight. It takes time, like some of those guys had shaky starts, but their passion persevered and they took it upon themselves to become something greater.”
Mercy shook her head in agreement over her mentor's advice. “That is great advice. I guess I’m just getting doubts because there is some person who is making claims that I’m just coasting through with my looks to get by.”
Delta raised her eyebrow. “Are you serious? Girl, you’re more than just your looks. Those who state otherwise are just insecure with their own looks and life. Those people should be your inspiration to become better than ever and prove them wrong.
Mercy deliberated Delta’s words, coming to a clarity with the muddled thoughts she was having over her place in LDFC. Mercy was thankful for having such a woman who has gone through a lot to guide her through her career.
“Take it from me. Don’t sleep with the owner of the company to get yourself a championship. Because, I was guilty of that.” Delta frowned at the admission.
Mercy chuckled. “I admire your honesty.”
Delta pressed her lips together, with a sturgeon frown. A mere moment later, Delta’s face lit up just remembering something.
“Oh! By the way, I connected you with my branding agency and I already got you a whole new brand coming your way…Wait here.” Delta excitedly got up from her seat to find something in the guest room, coming out with box. Delta opened the box to reveal a forest green shirt with a logo embezzled over it. The Logo was shaped of a green jewel with a lighter green tone within the shape.
Mercy’s jaw dropped, looking at the t-shirt realising it was for her. “OH MY GOD!” She exclaimed getting up from her seat to touch the shirt to get a closer look. “I love it!”
“See, look at the logo. It’s a emerald because you love green, and it’s shaped with your initials of MW. And I think you should call yourself the Emerald Jewel,” Delta pointed to the logo with her black manicured finger.
“That’s brilliant, I love it! Thank you so much!” Mercy hugged Delta for the gracious gift.
“Call this an early Christmas present, hun.” Delta hugged back and then draped the shirt on Mercy’s shoulder.
“This is so generous, I can’t thank you enough!” Mercy picked up the shirt from her shoulder and swapped her white long sleeve blouse to her branded shirt.
“I’m so glad you love it because I choose the final designs and if you didn’t liked it, I wouldn’t have been happy.” Delta nervously joked, but was really telling the truth.
“What are you crazy? This is just perfect, I wouldn’t hate this.” Mercy reassured her mentor.
Delta sat down back on the couch, with a sigh of relief, picking up her wine glass to take a large sip.
“Mercy, all seriousness, who cares what people say about you, all I can say is keep doing you. If you’re passionate about something, you’re going to preserve and become something. My road into wrestling wasn’t exactly one big straight road, you go through curves and roadblocks, it’s comes down to if you want to continue through that road. Nothing is smooth sailing.
Mercy smiled, grateful for the final advice from her blonde mentor. “You helped me a lot.”
