Tried

“I tried.”
A sneer passes over the man’s lips. Disgust playing over his features, those dead eyes now filled with a renewed malevolence.
“I tried to show you. To show you all. To make you see the...folly...of all this. There was a better way. A quieter way for all of you. For all of us. So simple. So perfect. To just...let go. Forget all of this, the schemes, the plots, the hierarchy of this broken world. I offered you...ALL OF YOU...a way out of this cycle of nightmares. This fruitless, pointless grasping at straws.”
His arms stretch out, palms up, hands open wide.
“I...extended a hand. To all of you. Each and every last one. To show you. To make you see the error of your ways. I was harsh. I was brutal. But only because that was all you understood. Only because that was the only way I could make you see. I gave you a chance to forgo all this. All the pomp, all the circumstance, all the rigamarole. I gave you every opportunity to stop falling in line, dancing to this absurd tune that’s been played for us since the dawn of time...To shuck this industry’s conventions, to shed this society’s foolish meritocracy...and fade peacefully. Peacefully and quietly, into the black.
Just like me.
I tried to help you.
I tried to save you.
Save you from yourselves.
But what did you do? You rebuked me. You belittled me. You tried to name me a liar. You fought me, even when I was the only one…the ONLY one...Trying to help you. I gave you...I gave all of you...an out. A way to escape this absurd, broken world. A way to stop running like a bunch of insipid rats searching for cheese that’s already rotted to the core. I gave you a release from your wasted hopes, and your useless dreams, and you SPAT IN MY FACE. Just like...Just like you spat in young Valcone’s face. When all he was...was your reflection. A reflection of your absurdity. He was a LESSON TO YOU ALL, AND YOU CHASTISED HIM. Humiliated him. Treated him like an animal. When all he was...was all of your flaws, exposed and brought to light. Your callousness. Your vanity. Your weakness. He showed it all to you, and rather than own it...You tried to ruin him.
But you failed.
You failed, and now he understands. Now he sees the joke this all is. Now he sees you ALL for what you are. Just like I do. Just like the Baroness will, when we finish at 3rd Strike. There is no saving you. There is no hope...for any of you.”
Those hands close into fists, a snarl crossing his lips.
“I understand now. I was a fool. A fool to try and show you a better way. A fool to try and make you understand the folly of all this. To show you the waste this life becomes. You never would have understood. you’re all too...stupid. Too selfish. Too WEAK...to do what’s truly necessary. To live life free of the constraints of society’s prison…
So I’m finished.
Finished trying to free you. Finished trying to save you. Finished trying to show you all the folly in all of this. Valcone...he sees you all now, for what you really are. Baroness...She will. Or she’ll be one of you soon enough. You’re not worth saving. You’re not worth freeing from this...pointless burden. You aren’t GOOD ENOUGH...to drown. Not like me.
So you’ll burn.
Every last one of you.
To the last man, woman or child. I will see you cut down, and razed from my sight. No shelter. No safety. No promise of the nebulous dark enveloping you, long enough to simply be forgotten. No. You had your chance for that. Now the only way...is pain. You chose this world, so now YOU WILL ALL BURN IN IT.
Bree Nelson. Donnie Cross. Emily Carter.
You’re the first. An example. I had such...hope for you once, Bree. But you rebuked me. Shamed me. So...you’ll suffer the most. And Little Donnie….he deserves to watch. To see his future come to bear. I’m going to show you what real pain is. I’m going to show you the world you’ve all wrought. When I’m finished...you’ll beg for my hand. Begging for my...forgiveness. You’ll beg for me to show you the way.
And I won’t.
Because you don’t deserve it.
I gave you a chance. I tried to make you see. But you chose otherwise. Now…
Now you all pay the consequences.”
