It was starting to get a little easier, the training regimen becoming more and more routine. Aric found that the more frequently he trained, the less sore he felt. It gave him a reason to start hitting the mats every day since Frontier to the Future. That, and the stress of what happened in Greensboro. The events of that night contemporarily fuels the amount of pressure his applying to the knee of his sparring partner, Juniper de Lago. He immediately lets up when she taps. She immediately clutches her knee. “Jeez, what got into you” she asks with a smile, “That actually hurt for once.” Aric give her a wry smile, “Well, you did tell me that you like it rough.” Juniper grabs Aric’s arm and rolls through putting him a cross arm breaker. Aric immediately begins to tap causing Juniper to laugh. “You’re trying to dish it, but you still can’t take it.” Aric cradles his arm and rubs his elbow as Juniper jumps to her feet.
Looking down at Aric, she begins to analyze him. “Maybe you should just open that envelope. You have no chance without whatever’s inside it.” Aric glares up at her, but it doesn’t faze her. “I mean it, AK, you’ve gotten better, much better, but everyone else is head and shoulders above you right now. You’re in the back of the class, amigo.” Aric shakes his head, “Yeah, unfortunately everyone saw me get the envelope and if I suddenly win at 3rd Impact everyone’ll know that I cheated. It’s a hairy situation.”
The two fighters make their way to their training bags. Juniper pulls a towel from hers and slings it over her shoulders before grabbing a protein shake and gulping half it down. She offers Aric one and he accepts it, uncapping it and slowly taking a few sips before capping it again. “I’m surprised LDFC hasn’t reprimanded you already to be honest” Juniper says after downing the remainder of her shake. This had crossed Aric’s mind as well. No one from the LDFC training staff had asked him about the envelope. Maybe they didn’t believe that Troy found such valuable information. Maybe they’re the ones that sold Troy the information in the first place. Maybe they just wanted to see what Aric would do. Or, maybe they wanted to see what he could do.
I know y’all are wonderin’ what’s inside this here envelope, but I got some bad news. I couldn’t tell you even if I knew. I haven’t opened it, and I don’t know if I ever will. That said, this episode isn’t about “4YRIZONL3.” It’s about my upcoming fight with Jack Bukowski, a legacy wrestler. Both his daddy and his brothers fight for a living. Can you believe that? A whole family of fighters? I’ve seen a family of doctors, a family of lawyers, and of course a family of farmers, but a family of fighters… That there worries me a bit. My first couple o’months hasn’t been a Sunday morning breakfast. A confusing and stressful match against Mercy Williams and Danny Hall in one match, and a bar setting match with Kellen Klein in another. Now, I’m up against a guy that has wrestling coursing through his veins. The bar has been re-raised, and I haven’t even touched the last notch.
I’ll be honest, I’m not used to being in this position. Things have always just clicked for me, but this… Wrestling is so nuanced when it shouldn’t be. It’s simple, right? You get in a ring and try to pin your opponent or make them submit. But it’s not that simple. You have to look at the details. Is your opponent faster than you? Stronger than you? More experienced than you? Every time I’ve stepped in that ring, I’ve had to check yes to each of those questions. Once again, I’ve been slated to face someone who outclasses me in every way. But, if I just trust in my training I may be able to surprise someone. It only takes a second for things to click, and when they do, ooh wee there’s no stopping me. You don’t have to believe me, all you have to do is watch and see. Jack Bukowski, I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve that’ll downright stun you, and they don’t come from the inside of an envelope. They come from the time that I’ve put into this, the dedication to do what I gotta do to get what I want. And what I want is a very simple thing. I want wealth and status. If I have to continue to get my ass kicked to get it then so be it. But believe me when I tell you that I ain’t goin’ down without a fight.
