Crippling Failures.

Twice now I’ve lost to Macy Dover. Neither of the victories were what I’d consider righteous. The first match was something of chance. I had her beat, but I tweaked my knee. It’s a shame that it happened, but it wasn’t meant to be that night. Now, she proved herself to be an opportunist. She’s a vicious woman with a chip on her shoulder. It makes her as horrid as she is. Her constant need to prove herself has devoured her whole, making her into whatever she is now.
I have to beat her to make sure that she knows her wrongs. Maybe if she knows, she’ll try to be better. It’s just that I keep thinking that she can’t. She’s incapable of realizing her faults. Egotism is her mask that protects her from the truths of our world. It makes her an idiot. I have to make sure she gets that. Beating her will do just that. A few more days.
“Hey, aren’t you in SSWA?” a young bloke said. The day was young; the sun barely gracing the city of Birmingham. I had left my flat to go get some groceries. Clutching my bag of fruit and bread, I was caught by some students of a nearby school.
“Yes, indeed,” I was shocked that the kid knew who was I was, and what SSWA was. SSWA, from what I hear, had a niche group of watchers, unless a special event was going on. I remember the fun of the Rookie X Cup and the UK Cup. All sorts of people were flooding the area, anxious to see some fine wrestling.
The kid stood there, hands shoved in his pockets. “I heard you were gay,” he soon replied. I flinched at the mere mentioning, and then I felt my mood sour. I primed myself for the worst, but they didn’t come. He smirked. “That’s pretty cool, man. I thought about coming out myself.”
A tad flabbergasted, I looked around. His friends weren’t jeering at him or anything. I took a breath to stabilize myself. “You should, if it’s beneficial to you. It’s a normal thing. It’s just what you are; you’ve been that your whole life,” I shrugged, “Just be careful if your parents and other folk aren’t going to take away things you need. That’s the crippling danger of it.”
He gave me a wide look; I hoped that I didn’t scare him. “That’s…pretty intense,” he murmured. I took a step to him.
“I give people the benefit of the doubt, though. My mother knew before I fully recognize it. My dad was proud I had the courage to say something to them. From what I usually hear, parents already know. You might not have to tell your uncle or whoever, but telling your parents…I don’t think they’ll mind,” I said, jesting in spirit. This got a smile out of the kid.
“Thank you, Mr…erhm…Kaiser,” I was glad he didn’t go snooping on Wikipedia and found out my real name. There was still faith in the world. “I’m not too worried about that, though.”
I titled my head. “Then what?”
“Um,” he nervously looked away, “Please don’t lose to Macy again. She needs her arse beat,” he said. I looked down instinctively, feeling his words deeply. He was right on both regards. He was scared I couldn’t do it.
“I believe you can do it,” but he believed that I had a chance. I rose my head back up, smiling.
“People like her needs a good one every now and again,” I began, “Hey, if I win, I hope that gives you enough strength to go tell your parents. I mean, you seem to have told them,” I mentioned at his friends.
“Deal?” I offered a hand. He took hold of it slowly, but surely.
“Deal.” He said.
“Macy Dover, round three, is it not?”
“I assume you’re sitting there with your SSWA Heavyweight Championship, thinking how quickly you can try to beat me this time. It’s not a bad thought. You’re the top dog now. You’ve beaten me twice. Yet, you haven’t done it decisively. There has always been something, right? I tweaked my knee and you didn’t allow the ref to give me the required medical attention. Some masked asshole attacked me in our second match. Two times, you’ve beaten me, but both times have been tainted.”
“And you’re proud of that, aren’t you?”
“Are you proud of your thievery too?”
“Of course, you are. It’s in your nature, lass. You’re riding a wave of momentum onto greater heights. However, you know how much you need to solidify your championship reign. You have to beat me first to start on that path. People will doubt you and spit on your championship reign if you don’t beat me. Then you’ll lose it and your mighty plan will equate to nothing. It’ll become the nail in your coffin.”
“You got the belt after surviving one of the toughest tournaments, you snuck up, and stole the belt from a hardworking man.”
“You know what was going to happen. I believe you to be smarter than most people put you out to be. Smurf would lay down the challenge. People would scream hostility at you. You have a storm to brave, love. I despise you for it, though, Miss Dover. You’re the most prominent person here in SSWA. You’re our principle champion, but look what you have done.”
“You’ve stained the name of SSWA with your selfish antics. That belt you had has a perfect blemish on it, because of what you’ve done. No matter what you’ve do to defend your reign, you’ll always be seen as the person who ended our age of honor. Every other championship has defended that belt valiantly and lost it fairly. Then you had to do what you did.”
“For what reason? Obviously, because you’re selfish. You need to constantly block out your previous failures. The fact that you’re not a professional futbol player; that you lost the Rookie X Cup by a hair. Those failures drive you to do heinous things. Are you that scared of losing? You’d fought hard to win the UK Cup. You probably registered that you couldn’t beat Smurf fairly. You didn’t want that failure on your conscious too.”
“It’s okay to be scared. You’ll have to face that fear directly when I beat you. Dover, are you ready to fall to a man that you beat twice? You’ll hear my words and think about the different circumstances to your prior victory. Here, in LDFC, those circumstances don’t exist. No masked man will try to assault me. My knee won’t give out on me. And I don’t have a shred of mercy for whelps like you.”
“I’m not going to play goofy with you. I’m not going to shake your hand. I’m going to beat down the SSWA Heavyweight Champion and put myself on the map. Defeating the person who ruined SSWA might put people on notice. Wrestling doesn’t need people like you holding championships. You ruin them just by holding them. With all the things you’ve done, I cannot just let you sit smirking. You wringing in your own self-righteousness is disgusting to me. Thus, I must beat the smile off your face. It’s be a step towards my goal of bringing wrestling back to what it was.”
“This is a sport where the best won without being deceptive. Not a game that you have to cheat to win in. You should know that, Macy. You played futbol. Did you cheat there too? Did you cheat in school? HAVE YOU BEEN CHEATING YOUR WHOLE, ENTIRE LIFE? I believe so. So, thus, the world will purge you eventually. I just have the chance to do it in regards to your wrestling career.”
“You do have a chance to save yourself, however. Everyone has a chance to change.”
“Fight me as valiantly as Smurf, Prince, or Corra did. Prove to me that you can clear your name. Then continue to do that. It’s just that this match is your punishment. It’s to help you open up your eyes. You haven’t faced me since I made this change.”
“Truth be told, Dover, I just don’t believe you have what it takes to be like those before you. You want to the best by any means. You’re just too ignorant to know that being like that will only make you the worst. You’ll proclaim that you were the best champion that SSWA has ever had, but you’ll constantly hear otherwise. And one day, when you’re done and out, you’ll believe it. And it will hurt you more than anything else in your life.”
“Your crowning moment was actually your most crippling failure.”
“Enter the ring with your same arrogance that I know you have. Watch me tear it away from you and leave you with a permanent memory, a new failure to ponder on. Because this time, you’re going to lose.”
