Skype blinked at her. She paused her game and set down her glass of Southern Comfort and lemonade. The screen flashed up with the beaming face of her cousin. A voice crackled through the speakers: "Eeeey cuz!"
Leanne smiled and activated her own webcam. "Hey, Ligaya. Good to see you."
It had been a while since the cousins had seen each other in the flesh - in fact, come to think of it, it had been a while since they'd spoken online either. The odd text had been it in the last few months. "Babygirl, you got a minute?"
"For you?" asked the Englishwoman, "Course I do, honey."
Ligaya coughed as she tried to speak while inhaling her joint. "Sure?" she managed.
"Sure."
Ligaya nodded. "Okay, so... I need career advice."
Leanne was caught by surprise at that - why would anyone come to her for advice? Of course, when Ligaya first started out, she kind of idolised Leanne, but... that was ages ago, before Ligaya had really been exposed to the business herself, and anyway - it had been while Leanne had been successful. That felt so long ago now...
She shook her head in confusion, but said, "Shoot," nonetheless.
"So," began Ligaya, "My next opponent down in Lion's Den, yeah, she's a boxer. I ain't never fought a boxer before. I, uh... just wondering if, ya know, you got any advice?"
"A boxer? Like... punching?"
"Yeah, she was in that... fox... place?"
Leanne thought for a moment then sighed, "Oh. Dom's place. Fuck Dom."
With a shrug, Ligaya replied, "I guess? Iunno. What do I do against a boxer?"
"Uuuh..." murmured Leanne as she thought about it, "Don't get punched?"
Ligaya nodded and scribbled something down on a notepad. "Don't... get... punched. Okay."
Leanne cleared her throat. "Um. I was joking."
"Oh?" asked Ligaya, furrowing her brow, "Oh, okay..."
...and she started rubbing out what she'd written.
"No! I mean, uh, you prob'ly really shouldn't get punched." She threw some of her drink down her gullet then leaned back. "Let's see... well, Jay used to box. He never really taught me any of it, but he throws crosses sometimes when we're training. And Pat Gordon Jr, I think he's got some boxing training? I've only properly wrestled him once, but I've sparred with him a bunch. He's got that thing where he... punches the other person in the arm a bunch of times. I can't remember the name for it."
"He... what? Why?"
"No, trust me," said Leanne, "It hurts like a motherfucker. Oh, Laurel's wrestled West McFadden a couple of times, I think he used to box?"
Ligaya nodded and said, "Right! Is she in? Can you go get her?"
"Uh, no - she's in the States right now," admitted Leanne, "She's visiting Mia and Lacey, and then she's got a match in California on Monday." Leanne braced herself for the Why would you bring it up in the first place then?, which would have been her own reaction, but Ligaya didn't seem to have that response at all.
Instead, her Canadian cousin simply said, "Okay, well, what ya think I should do?"
"Um... tell you what, I'll ask Jay to talk to you when he gets home?"
"Sure, that works."
Leanne nodded. Truthfully, she really wasn't comfortable giving advice like this despite her semi-official role as Jay's assistant trainer at Caledonian. With Ligaya... with Ligaya, it was her unwavering admiration, that no matter how much Leanne fucked up, her younger cousin still always saw her as some kind of hero through that barely-conscious cloud she lived in.
Leanne cleared her throat. "So what ya been up to lately?"
Leanne smiled and activated her own webcam. "Hey, Ligaya. Good to see you."
