"Y'know, we're all right proud of ya." Darren Cross said, ruffling the hair of his youngest brother. "I still can't believe you and Bree really done up and did it." He said with a slight shake of his head.
Donovan couldn't help but smile. It felt good getting his big brother’s stamp of approval. It had been months since the brother's had seen one another; months since Donovan had left Shreveport to pursue his dreams alongside Bree; but they spoke fairly often. For out of all his siblings, Darren was probably the one he was closest to, well aside from his sister McKenzie. That was why it had been a pleasant surprise when Darren had showed up to randomly support he and Bree the night of A New Generation. Although Donnie was pretty sure Darren’s pop in had been the result of their mother’s badgering, simply wanting a first hand assurance that her youngest son was alright and well in North Carolina.
"I told ya we were. You just ain't think we could." Donnie smirked, playfully jabbing his brother in the arm.
Darren grunted. “You’re right.” He agreed. There was no denying it on his part. He hadn't been the most supportive of Donnie's decision to pursue wrestling. It wasn't because he didn't think his brother would be any good. It was just because he didn't think his brother or Bree for that matter were cut out for that lifestyle. But seeing his brother in that ring at A New Generation, and seeing how he was holding up had convinced Darren that his baby brother was far tougher than Darren had given him credit for.
"I didn’t think you or your little girlfriend had it in ya." Darren said with a sigh, reluctantly eating the crow. "But you're proving me wrong, kid. You both are, and that there’s a good thing. Ya keep right on at it, ya hear me?"
Donovan nodded, before quickly interjecting. “And she’s not my girlfriend.” His response only prompted Darren to laugh.
“You two still playing that game, huh?” Darren teased. Donnie rolled his eyes. “I’ono why you don’t just make it official. I never seen two people more perfect for one another than you two.” Darren could sense Donnie’s uneasiness on the subject, so he decided to leave it be. “But, you’ll work it out eventually, won’t ya? I know that’s the furthest thing from ya mind...” He nudged Donnie with an elbow. “...since you’re bout to be a wrasslin star and all. So when’s ya next match?”
Donnie breathed a sigh of relief, happy at the change of subject. “Well, I’m going up against Prince MacRear in Gibsonville soon, but you’ll prolly be done headed back by then.”
Darren nodded. “Yeah, I’ll be gone little bro. Cheyenne’ll lose her mind if I’m gone for too long, ya know that.” he joked, knowing his wife was probably enjoying him gone. “But MacRear huh?” He asked, sounding amused.
“What’s so funny?” Donnie wondered. “I’m actually pretty nervous. The guy’s good man. And this ain’t his first rodeo neither.” He frowned, thinking of the huge advantage in experience MacRear had on him.
Darren simply waved him off. “You’ll do just fine, kid. You’re a Cross.” He said, jabbing Donnie in the chest with his finger. “And besides…” He shrugged. “...if you lose to that joker…” He shook his head and whistled. “I’ll never let ya live that one down, baby bro.” he said, a burst of laughter accompanying his words.
And Donnie knew he meant it.
