The latest video on the Lions' Den FC website starts with shaky handheld footage and the steady sound of thumping. After a moment, the camera pans up to reveal the source of the sound: academy starlet Katherine Kensington, seen performing repeated shoulder thrusts against a drill-pad. These are having a visible toll on the Brit's shoulder, but this does not deter Katie, who presses on. Upon noticing the cameraman, however, she halts herself, flashing her brightest smile.
'Ah! Darling, you're here.'
Katherine begins to pace towards the camera, visibly dishevelled but still maintaining her composure.
'I am sorry you have to see me like this, Katie Kats, but I simply could not resist the urge to say some additional words to Mr. Majima, after his fascinating insights a few days past. And pressed for time as I have found myself of late, a break in training will have to suffice.'
Katie wipes her sweating brow with a towel as she continues:
'Mr. Majima, while I must confess to not having entirely understood your metaphor about nails and hammers – you men and your carpentry projects! - it would seem the two of us have rather similar intents with regards to grappling training, namely to make ourselves noticed. In my case, both my father and my mother believe this pursuit to be nothing more than a whim, and while they do endeavour to support my decision, they both expect my ambitions to come to naught. My goal in taking up training at Lions' Den academy is, therefore, to prove their doubts unfounded - and what better way to do so than to assert myself as a valid contender within a talented roster? As you will no doubt agree, a win over you, particularly after my unfortunate outing at New Generation, could represent a huge step forward in that regard.'
The young prospect takes a generous swig from her water bottle before continuing:
'As you see, Mr. Majima, our intentions vis-a-vis grappling and this academy are roughly similar. It is our approach to said goals which sets us apart. You have stated a desire to put the roster on notice, using me as your first stepping stone. My intention is simply to affirm myself as a competitor, whether in defeat or – hopefully – in victory. If that entails falling down seven times to stand up the eighth, so be it; if, as you forecasted, I find myself incapable of standing at the end of the seventh...well, at the very least people shall be able to say 'there lies Katherine, who gave it her all and fought to the last of her strength against a much stronger and harder-hitting opponent'. Either seems like a perfectly valid way to get oneself noticed, wouldn't you say?'
Katherine places the water bottle and towel back inside her gym bag before turning to the camera one last time:
'Mr. Majima, I do sincerely hope you bring your best to our encounter in Gibsonville next Wednesday. I should expect nothing less from you, in fact. I request that you hit me with your hardest strikes, and that you hold nothing back on account of my gender or build. I feel as though the best strategy for improving in a contact sport might be by, well, experiencing full contact. And as of Lion's Den Pride Series 2, Episode 1...that is precisely what I intend to do.
So please...do make me fall seven times, so that I may stand up the eighth.'
With this, the beginner returns to her training, as the feed cuts off.
