"Something."
He pauses, almost chuckling, before the sound fades as quickly as it came.
"It sounds so simple, doesn't it? Something to fight for. Something to work towards. Something, anything, to live for. A reason. A reason for existing, a reason to keep moving, pushing, plowing ahead...A reason for being. So simple.
Such a waste."
He sneers.
"For someone who understands so much...who sees what I see...who KNOWS how meaningless all of this, all of this pomp and circumstance and pageantry...how wasted these paltry lives are on such needless and hopeless pursuits...You disappoint me, Serenity. You have this understanding, you see how the world works, how...useless our existence is...not just see it, but acknowledge it. Accept it. And still...
Still you keep on fighting."
He shakes his head.
"Keep pushing, trying to find a reason....A reason for being. A reason to keep going, to keep sucking breath through those tortured lungs. You see what the world is, what life is, the needless, shapeless ugliness of it all. You understand it, Serenity...but you refuse to just accept it. That...that is the saddest thing of all. At least the others...they fall without understanding. They go to their graves, deluding themselves that it was all something that mattered....they die living in their delusions, as twisted as they might be. But you, you see the light at the end of the tunnel. You know what it is to be free of this monotony, the chains of all this blighted existence...you don't have to lie to yourself. You don't have to waste your days trying to pretend that all this matters. YOU COULD ACCEPT YOUR FATE, and be free.
Free of the trials, and the tribulations. Free of all the wasted, futile gestures that this life brings with it.
But you CHOOSE not to be.
I'd find it sad, if sad was something to feel."
A mild sigh.
"This world....is an ocean. An endless sea that we're all adrift in, until eventually...we start to sink. Until we drown. I've accepted that. I'm ready. I'm just here, waiting for the waves to finally pull me under, and bury me beneath the silt. But you, Serenity, you're kicking, thrashing, paddling, trying desperately to find shore...struggling through those crushing waves toward something that doesn't even exist.
It's ok, Serenity. I'll help you.
I'll pull you down, down deep, down here with me...I'll hold you underneath the dank blue, and I'll help you understand. I'll make you see. All of this...all of it...is meaningless. None of it is worth fighting for.
Nothing.
I'll show you, Serenity. You can stop fighting. You can let go...
And drown, just like the rest.
Just like me."
