Heavy rainfall pelted the lone tree, but Nest was still in his usual dwelling. Leaning against the trunk, he’s not bothered by the light shower. “Another win under my belt...bittersweet. And it’s not just because I can’t really call the win my own thanks to a certain someone. It’s bittersweet because now people are starting to…”
Nest slightly cringes.
“...believe in me...” He sighs, not even bothering to wipe the water from his face. “Trainers dudes are talking about moving me up to the intermediate class, and now they’ve thrown me into a match I’ve never dealt with: Triple Threat. Three way dance. Whatever it’s actually supposed to be called. The fact is, I’ve only beaten one man on my own...and now I must beat two...at once. And to top it off, both of these guys are in the freaking advanced class. I got my ass handed to me by the booty princess because he was advanced and it was my first match that wasn’t in someone’s backyard. But then again, I guess it wasn’t easy for him which stands for something.”
Nest shrugs as he has visions of his childhood. He remembered the times when he took an interest to something and everyone in his family mocked Nest for having too high expectations of himself.
“I’m just not used to people believing in me. It’s not exactly something I know how to react to. I just know it’s added pressure...which means it’s added pressure applied to my opponents, XV Trooper and Deron Franklin. Even though these guys are advanced, I’ve been here at Lion’s Den since the doors opened. XV Trooper’s new and I haven’t even see him around the training center yet. Maybe we miss each other or maybe he just isn’t as dedicated. Whatever the case may be, I know nothing except he has five years experience.” Finally, Nest takes his hand and runs it over his face. “Deron’s got one match under his belt where he lost to another beginner, AKIRA Kaede. Maybe it was because him and his friend spent more time talking trash in front of a webcam, when they should’ve been taking her seriously."
Nest laughs.
“For Deron’s sake, he shouldn’t let his manager pull his strings as if he’s some kind of puppet. It obviously has done you more harm than good if you went from a major playground like EXODUS Pro to the developmental training school that is the Lion’s Den. And having gone pro three years prior...you’re entering the ring that becomes my nest when I’m inside of it. I’m feeling more and more comfortable here and it’s doing wonders for my confidence, something I didn’t expect this sport to help me with.”
“Pride has officially become my dwelling. And who knows? Maybe if I keep my feet on the ground and fists in the air, I may even have a chance at that new Apex Championship I’ve been hearing buzz about.” Nest grins. “But I can’t look ahead of Deron and XV. And I wouldn’t want them to feel disrespected, thinking I’m not taking them seriously. I take every match I have seriously because this is all serious business. This isn’t ballet, your well-being and livelihood is on the line when you go out there boys….and this is only time you’ll see water running down my eyes.” Nest wipes his eyes of the water. “Just don’t take it personal when I have to step over you both to continue building my Nest.”
He leans back, closing his eyes.
