Each Wednesday for Serenity and Ligaya when they weren't south of the border, wrestling for Lion's Den FC, went much the same way - Ligaya tending to her "babies", Serenity working her part time job as a barista, both heading to Battlegrounds Academy before and/or after those things to get some training in, and then once they were finally home, unwinding with cartoons and videogames, and a table laid out with snacks, bongs and beer.
Come to think of it, their Tuesdays were like that too. And their Thursdays. And Mondays, and Sundays. And a lot of their Fridays and Saturdays. All that changed were the shows they watched and the games they played, and whether or not any of their friends would turn up for a while. Tonight's incredible adventure was Princess Jellyfish with Red Stripe and the vague possibility of Chuck and Ryan showing up at some point (they probably wouldn't; they hardly ever did).
Serenity hadn't really realised the routine was getting to her until Ligaya turned to her and asked, with equal parts concern and obligation, "What's eating you?" - and then suddenly the thin supports of Serenity's denial snapped, and the weight of it hit her in a single collapse.
Still, she said simply, "What d'you mean?"
"You been sighing all night like a motherfucker."
"Have I?" Around other company, Serenity would have tried to deny it, but there was no point with Ligaya. She just sighed again, and asked plaintively, "Is this it for us?"
"Huh?"
Serenity leaned sideways to rest on the arm of the settee. "Is this our life? Wrestling, like, once a week, and then just hanging out and getting wasted?"
Ligaya moved a little closer, suddenly feeling worried for her best friend's health. "What's wrong with that?"
"Didn't you ever want more from life?" asked Serenity with a hollow snort-laugh.
Ligaya frowned and shook her head, less in disagreement and more in simply not understanding the question. "We get to wrestle, and we get to live together, and we see our friends... that's all I ever wanted out of life."
"All you ever wanted?" repeated Serenity, but the incredulity was feigned. She knew Ligaya well enough. "I just look at... okay, look at our next match. Bree and Donovan. We've been doing this how much longer than them? And there we are, on the same level as them. Annie Zellor started the same time as us, and look where she is. Sebastian Grey started not long before us. Hell, I think Nina Stokes started after us. And they're all big stars and we're wrestling in armouries in front of a couple hundred people...
...don't you want more?"
Ligaya looked into space. When she replied, her voice was distant. "I guess? I dunno, J... everything I ever wanted to do, I'm already doing."
"Well... I'm not," said Serenity bluntly, "I ain't staying in places like Lion's Den and SMG the rest of my life. Hell, if I'm not with a proper company in a year... I'm done."
Ligaya's mouth hung open. "But..."
"But what?"
"Wrestling is everything you've wanted for years, J..."
"Yeah. Well."
Serenity never followed that up, and Ligaya felt it best not to ask 'Well what?'
Without any better idea of what to say or do, she just hit play on the next episode of Princess Jellyfish and started packing another bong.
