The scene opens with a close up shot of Hans Kuntz. In particular, his face. With its pallid complexion and sunken eyes, the closely shorn head and thick, unruly stubble; he stares down into the lens of the recording device – in this case a cell phone – and speaks to the Lions Den Fight Club fans for the first time. “Zere is a saying in zis country,” Hans starts, speaking slowly and in his native accent, “you should learnt to valk before you run.”
“Ve have a similar saying vere I am from.” Hans says, curtly. “Wiederholung ist die Mutter der Weisheit. I do not believe zat many of my colleagues speak German, however. So it roughly translates to repetition is ze Mutter of knowledge.”
“It is vy zey offer ze beginner und ze intermediate classes here at Lions Den Fight Club. It is vy so many people have signed to zose courses. Because, contrary to ze overvhelming evidence zat is displayed every day. On your news programmes, on ze Internet – Facebook, Twitter, forums or anyvhere people can say vat is on zeir minds…” Hans pauses, his nostrils are flared as he exhales through gritted teeth. “…not all of you are fat, lazy und stupid.”
“But zere are still some…” he jokes, wagging his finger at the camera as he uses his traditional German sense of humour.
“But you have zis saying, vich is vy I am curious as to vy my opponent, Brody Vatts has decided he belongs in the advanced class…” Hans scoffs, further showing his disdain. “A man who is still in his rookie year as a professional vestler, has taken it upon himself to run before he can valk. Is zis vat zey taught you last year ven you vere still learning down in Knoxville, Brody? Alzough, it is impressive zat you learned more zan how to drag your personal life onto ze airwaves for all to see, unlike some of your fellow students zere.”
“Or zis all part of a larger problem zat is plaguing you?”
“Do you often suffer from zese delusions of grandeur, as you might call zem. To zink you are one of ze best that Lions Den Fight Club has to offer?
“You do not belong in ze ring vis me, Brody. On Vednesday you vill learn zat ze hard vay. Und vhen I am done vis you, you can ask Herr Bond to be released from ze advanced program, so you can go learn vis Herr Dresden or Herr Spikes. Und you can learn to valk before you run, Brody.”
“Alzough, zat…” Hans starts, pausing only to sneer, “…zat vould not be very fun for me. Continue your ignorance until ve meet, Brody. So I can be ze one to show you ze errors of your vays. Let zese vords fall on deaf ears, so you can learn first hand exactly vat it means to truly deserve to be advanced.”
“Wer nicht hören will, muss fühlen.” Hans says in his native tongue before flashing a devious smile down at the phone in his hands as the recording comes to an end.
