~*~ OFF CAMERA ~*~
The scene opens in a motel room on the south side of Monroe, New Jersey on the evening of Wednesday, January 11th. The ten-by-ten room is the temporary home of Jenny Zellor during her two-day stay before she heads home (that's the plan, anyway) to Syracuse tomorrow morning. Surrounded by Navaho white walls and framed pictures of nondescript fields, Jenny sits on the edge of the bed with her cell phone pressed against one ear. She's wearing a green hoodie and jeans.
Jenny
You should have seen him tonight, Pops ... he wasn't his usual self.
Papa Zellor
It's nothing to be worried about.
The voice on the other end of the phone obviously belongs to her father, Jack Zellor (remember him from a few weeks ago), the man responsible for getting Jenny this job as Blaine's valet. He knows the young man as well as anyone in the industry, what with having helped train him.
Jenny
But he's been moody and sullen all week! He won't let me speak in his promos. This isn't what I signed up for, Pops.
Papa Zellor
D'ya want me to speak to him?
Jenny
No...
She says hesitantly. She'd love her father to speak to Blaine about the issue, but at the same time doesn't want Blaine to think less of her for having someone else fight her battles.
Papa Zellor
And you're a valet, Jenny. Your job is to stand there and look pretty. Let Blaine do the talking, he's better at it. And when someone disrespects him in the ring and, God help him, mentions his personal life in a promo ... You can expect him to be in a bad mood like that.
Jenny
What? Why?
Papa Zellor
He's a temperamental bastard...
Jenny rolls her eyes; she knows Blaine has the emotional maturity of a twelve-year-old, but she doesn't know all that much about his personal life. Even though she spent Christmas at his house, there weren't any pictures of friends or family like there are at her house in Syracuse. No mementos of treasured memories, precious moments in time he'd want to remember forever. That's not true, there is one picture of Dianna by his bedside but Jenny suspects that was Dianna's doing and not Blaine's. And now that she thinks about it, Blaine has never mentioned anything remotely personal except when they were working on that mock 'Behind The Music' film, which, even then, didn't focus on his personal life.
Jenny
...I meant, why should he get in a bad mood if anyone mentions his personal life?
Papa Zellor
He's had some set backs...
Jenny
I know about his brother and Pierre if that's what you mean.
Papa Zellor
That's not what I mean. Just whatever you do, don't press the issue, Jen.
Jenny
But ... Okay!
She trusts her father on this issue. There's a nagging doubt in the back of her mind as to what issues it is that Blaine doesn't want to speak about, which the very mention of causes him to huff and puff like a toddler who's not allowed another cookie.
Jenny
I am supposed to accept all his flaws so easily?
Papa Zellor
I had to pull a lot of favors just to get you this job, Jen. For me, please.
A sigh escapes her lips as she comes to the realisation that she's practically stuck with Blaine as her client for the time being. At least until she's more experienced and can get a job with a larger promotion, possibly someone that lets her talk on camera.
Jenny
For you, Pops. I'll let you get back to what you were doing then. I love you, bye.
Papa Zellor
Bye...
And with that the phone conversation is over. Jenny flings herself back on the bed with a mere hint of rage, growling under her breath as she allows herself to get angry. Maybe next week will be better.
Blaine Harrison
A match made for the fans' enjoyment.
I say as I sit on a bench in one of the many gyms here in Santa Barbara. Sweat beads running down my forehead as I gulp down another quarter of the bottle of water. I've been busting my balls getting ready for this match and the start of the tournament; it's been announced that I'm facing Jack Flener and that means my next two opponents are significantly tougher than the opponents I've beaten here in FGA.
Blaine Harrison
Can't argue with that statement. A match against Jared James is something I've been hoping for, something I've been looking forward too since it was announced a few days ago.
My black vest is stuck to my chest, damp and heavy with perspiration. My breathing is heavy between sentences. The gym around me is bustling with people doing their various exercises, bench-presses, sparring, skipping rope and whatever else takes their fancy. I've been doing cardio exercises for the last hour.
Blaine Harrison
You're one of the wrestlers I've looked up to over the last few years, Jared. Success and glory seem to follow you wherever you go, wherever you wrestle. You're the guy here in FRONTIER that's undefeated, having beaten both members of The Harvard Connection and James Weck. Twice. That's not an easy feat. You're one of the best high flyers around; the best high flyer in FRONTIER, period. You're the man many are tipping as the guy who'll come away from '2012: A New Odyssey' as the first ever FGA Heavyweight Champion.
I pause, smiling shyly.
Blaine Harrison
Who wouldn't be intimidated by that?
Jenny
Anybody with any sense would be intimidated by that!
What the fuck!? Jenny approaches me from behind, placing her hands on my shoulders; she ignores the layer of sweat and continues smiling for the camera. My momentary look of confusion is soon replaced by the shy smile I had before; I'm still wondering why she's here and how she found me, but I have to work to do and am not about to stop it to ask her these questions while we're on camera ... Where was I?
Blaine Harrison
Sure, sure. I mean, I'm thankful you saved me from the disrespectful son-of-a-bitch, Scott Reave a couple of weeks ago. My arms is healing nicely and I should be back to my best when we meet. And don't worry, Jared, I have no intention of swinging a chair at you like I did with the Harvard Connection!
I chortle, Jenny laughs as well at the memory of me chasing off Preston and Chandler last week on Combat.
Jenny
I think that one evened things out between the two of you!
Blaine Harrison
I think so too. The only thing I'm a little uneasy about this week is The Harvard Connection being guest commentators for our match. Firstly, who wants to hear what those two Ivy League braggarts have to say about anything? And secondly, call me cynical, but I don't think they're willing to let bygones be bygones after last week. They seem like the type of guys who if Jared beats both of them in singles action and if I thwart their attempt at revenge by chasing them off with a chair, that they might not let that slide. Then again I mistook Scott Reave as someone who might show honour in the ring; I've been wrong before and I'm sure I'll be wrong again some time. Nobody’s perfect.
Jenny
Definitely not. So what we're looking forward to this week is a match against a man who is as good as they come in FRONTIER. A man who is undefeated! A man who fights with honour!
Damn it, she's parroting me.
Jenny
Jared James is the man to beat in FRONTIER at the moment after four wins in a row, but he's never come across Blaine Harrison before.
I have to cut her off; she's embarrassing me now, not only by repeating what I've already said but by making me sound like an in-ring behemoth. As if I'm seven foot tall, five hundred pounds. That's not my style, damn it!
Blaine Harrison
That he hasn't ... This match is going to be one for the ages; an early contender for match of the year here in FGA. You and me, Jared, gonna blow the roof off the Monroe Sports Center. I've got my game plan; as I said, I've been looking forward to this for a long, long time. I've had an idea of what I can do to try and beat you since I was twenty-two years old. I've watched you whenever I could, be it in CFW, SCCW, RoP. I've seen you action hundreds of times, Jared and you've never let me down when it comes to being entertained. You've never let me down when it comes to being in awe of you and your in-ring ability. I don't want to use the word idol, but I look up to you. You've achieved more in this business than I've even dreamt of...
I lie at the end; I've dreamt bigger than secondary titles in regional promotions, but I don't want to belittle Jared's achievements when my only title is the one I hold in Peach State Wrestling. And that's a tag title. Regardless, I continue with my doe-eyed expression as I carry on sucking up to Jared.
Blaine Harrison
Of course, I'm not going to let you in on this plan. As much as I respect you, Jared, I'm going to Monroe this Wednesday with every intention of winning. I realise you won't be as easy as Elliot Black was, but I'd like to think I can throw down with you in that squared circle. Because there are few things in this world that would please me as being the first man to defeat Jared James here in FGA! Being the man who breaks your streak; so I can go into '2012: A New Odyssey' with some momentum and possibly, maybe try to capture that coveted Heavyweight Championship. That's the dream we all have isn't it? You're a step up from what I've faced before, but come Wednesday night, I promise not to disappoint, Jared.
Jenny
That's right!
Blaine Harrison
I won't disappoint the fans when they expect one helluva contest between us. I won't disappoint you when you step into that ring, expecting an honourable opponent who'll push your limits. I won't disappoint The Harvard Connection if they're looking for a fight on Wednesday night. And I won't disappoint myself when Combat starts and I expect to be the man to break Jared James's undefeated streak.
I smile and laugh playfully. Jenny follows suit.
Jenny
We're looking forward to Wednesday Weekly Combat, so we'll see you at the Monroe Sports Center, Jared!
Jenny signals for the cameraman to stop recording, which he does. I stand from my seated position, pushing Jenny's arms off my shoulders as I do so. She looks concerned by the angry expression on my face.
Blaine Harrison
What the fuck are you doing here?
I say under my breath so the other gym patrons don't become aware of my displeasure. I don't want to make a spectacle.
Jenny
You were cutting a promo, I thought I should be here too.
Blaine Harrison
No...
I say without any real conviction. When she puts it like that I can't think of a good argument why she shouldn't be here. I mean, sure, I wanted to do this solo so she wouldn't think I'm such a hideous sycophant when it comes to praising Jared James. But she's my valet and should really be here when I cut my promos.
Jenny
Why not!? I'm your valet, I'm supposed to be with you!
She's raised her voice. Some of the gym patrons stop what they're doing and stare at us.
Jenny
How am I supposed to be "stand there and look pretty" if you won't even let me stand there!?
Blaine Harrison
Quieten down...
Jenny
Answer me, Blaine!
Blaine Harrison
Please be quiet...
I can feel eyes burning into me as over seventy-five percent of the people in the local vicinity are glaring at me as if I'm the bad guy here. She crashed my shoot!
Blaine Harrison
I'm sorry, I should have brought you along.
Jenny
You should have ... You promise to bring me along the next time you want to cut a promo?
Blaine Harrison
Sure.
Jenny
Say you promise.
Blaine Harrison
I promise to bring you along the next time I cut a promo.
Her stern expression softens; a smile forms on her face before she hugs me around the waist, burying her head momentarily into my chest before recoiling in horror at the moisture and possibly the smell. A quick gag and her smile returns, which makes me smile regardless of how put-on it is.
Jenny
I'm just lucky Dianna told me where you had gone otherwise I never would have found you...
She says as I nod my head in mock appreciation of my girlfriend's 'help' in this situation. Maybe I should have told Dianna to keep her mouth shut. It's bad enough that Jenny had the idea to spend more time with me by flying back to Santa Barbara with me, but I thought that just meant evenings playing video games and training together. For some reason I didn't expect her to want to be in my promo. Maybe that's why she's had the hump lately..
I returned home that night alone; Jenny went her separate way to grab some fast food from a chain restaurant I can't be bothered to remember the name of. She's annoyed me and the details of what she does don't interest me. I showered at the gym and got changed out of my workout clothes, so I'm now wearing my favourite jeans (the ones with ripped knees) and a brown t-shirt with a white print picture of Jerry Garcia's face. Strolling casually down the street since Jenny took my car to get her supper, I reach my driveway as I spy Dianna sitting under the hanging plants on my stoop. She sees me too and smiles broadly before running over to me, wrapping her arms around my neck as she jumps into my arms and kisses me closed mouth on the lips.
Blaine Harrison
It's nice to see you too.
I say jokingly. Maybe I should have gone with 'you seem happy'.
Dianna
Hey babe, guess what.
Blaine Harrison
Justin Bieber has retired from pop music and won't be releasing any more songs?
Please let that be it...
Dianna
Uh, nooooo! Come on, serious guess...
Blaine Harrison
I don't have a clue...
Dianna
Well, I'm hoping you haven't got any plans for us on Valentine's Day--
Crap, I probably should have planned something by now.
Dianna
--because I'm the most awesomest girlfriend in all time and I got us tickets to see that singer you like in concert!
She smiles broadly again, her pearly whites on show for all to see. There's genuine excitement in her eyes; I grin happily in return. It truly is a great gesture, I never expected something like this from Dianna. Especially since I've been an ass lately, sulking about Scott Reave, hiding my one night stand with Tiffani Michaels last month and, sometimes unsuccessfully, attempting to mask my undying hatred of Dianna's mother.
Blaine Harrison
That's great!
I say mustering as much enthusiasm as I can.
Blaine Harrison
Which singer though?
Dianna
Err, Pierre LaFountain?
Blaine Harrison
LaFontaine ... We're going to see Pierre LaFontaine!?
Oh shit...

A disappointment or sobering realization forces you to re-evaluate your course, make adjustments, and draw upon more of your resources than you had planned to. Overwork, a feeling of pressure and unease, and the weight of responsibilities may precipitate a minor health crisis. Avoid exhausting your energies at this time; lie low and do only what is truly necessary.
