She Will Not

Things really took a turn for Jaelynn Ramsey at the start of 2019. Being drafted to FGA’s Flashpoint brand without her New Murder associates meant that she was back to fending for herself. Although being on her own meant that she could not count on anyone having her back during shows, this gave her the chance to prove to herself that wasn’t in need of the comfort of riding coattails.
There was no alleged shadow to hide under.
Maybe the neon lights would come back on.
In between show tapings, Jaelynn retreated to her hometown to maintain her training regimen while making sure her younger sister Audrielle kept up with her schoolwork. The two were super close since being given the chance to live together again. But even then, Jae maintained secrecy when it came to that gray area between work and home life.
Jae was well aware that her sister was probably suspicious, however, Audri knew better than to casually bring up certain topics at dinner or whenever they were together. Instead, Jae tried to keep her focused on meeting a goal and sticking to academic plans. Everything else was secondary - including men.
On a cold morning in Salt Lake City, Utah, Jaelynn had driven about forty minutes to the ski slopes at Solitude Mountain. These were mountains that she could only see on a calendar or postcard in her formative years. The income generated from FGA allowed her to spend some of her free time away from home, with someone other than her sister or her known friends.
“Shit, that was close…” Jaelynn says under her breath after landing on the snow-covered slope from the ski lift. She shakes off the powdery snow from her knees, all while attempting to keep her balance on the snowboard attached to the soles of her boots.
Following her landing, another body lands on the snow with intent, revealing Jaelynn’s “lift buddy” to be her own FGA colleague, Kol.
For several months, the pair of twentysomethings have been spending time together. Like their peers or anyone in the business, it wasn’t out of the ordinary to get acquainted with coworkers whether it was to split the cost of lodging or to simply have someone to interact with until it was go-time. Vaguely knowing of his active “dating” life, she didn’t set any high expectations for their arrangement to evolve into something more. They were both on the same page by keeping things with no strings attached.
They hold onto a rope that pulls them upward and from there, they’re free to take off on their snowboards. Jaelynn lets Kol lead the way, unsure if he would actually know which would be the best spot to make their way down from the mountain. He takes his time, remaining observant of the surroundings as if taking it all in.
“Are you having second thoughts?” Jae asks, jokingly.
“No, but I’d rather take my sweet time than make a fool of myself,” Kol says with a small smirk on his face. He looks around for a bit before finally deciding on the perfect spot, taking another glance at Jaelynn, “I think this should be good.”
The now-former FGA World champion knew damn well that the blonde was far too comfortable in these surroundings and despite being originally from New York, the few years he spent in Tampa Bay were not helpful at all. She inches over to their left, pointing at the trees beneath them along the trail.
“Almost - unless you want to leave your guts splattered on what should’ve been someone’s Christmas tree next year,” she says, shaking her head slowly.
The comment seems to go over his head at first as he remains still in his own world. She wondered for about half a second what was going on in his head after everything that’s happened lately. Maybe the high altitude was getting to him? She thought better than to pry, and instead checked on her board one last time to make sure it was secured.
“It’s nice here.”
Those three words are followed by silence before he looks over at her and smiles. She returns the expression before looking away. He does the same, allowing a moment of vulnerability as he covers his eyes with tinted goggles. Light on his feet, he then unexpectedly descends from the mountain after a perfectly executed push from Jaelynn. She watches him nearly flip forward until he muscles his way back to regaining control and balance.
“It's even nicer below!” she says out loud before joining him on the journey down. Far from being professionals, they were at least able to refrain from falling flat on their faces. As they continue going further down, Jae has a moment to herself. She thinks about how much alike Kol and her are. There was the obvious sexual chemistry, though she knew that the closer they’d get, the more time they spent alone or allowed for deep conversation - she’d be in trouble.
SPLAT! A snowball bursts on the side of Jae’s head. She removes her goggles to get a better look, seeing Kol with a shit-eating grin across his face.
“Payback. You forget that I can be very petty when I want to be,” he says, winking at Jaelynn after removing the goggles from his face. He then put his hands up, as if to offer up a truce after he got the last shot in. The little smile on his face almost insinuates that he expects some form of retaliation from the blonde.
That was exactly what Jae thought off - they’d always want to one-up the other. They'd be another story on a deadly couples series featured on the ID Network. Viewers would eat that up, given their current exposure to wrestling fans and for being pretty people. (See Ted Bundy.) She gets close to him, remaining silent for a few seconds until she bursts into laughter. “Only for about a second, and that’s all it took for you to do what you do...best,” she punches his arm lightly before taking a step back to take her snowboard off.
“You like this time of the year?” Kol asks as he too tries to take his snowboard off.
“I like that it’s calm; everyone’s back to being broody because they’ve overindulged and overspent during the holidays. Maybe that’s a wrong way of thinking. Don’t tell Annie and Dom,” she says, shaking her head at the backlash from the holiday-loving couple. “What about you?”
“Haven’t you heard? I apparently don’t like anything,” he states with another little smirk on his face, “But if I’m being honest? I never get why people complain about the cold weather. I enjoy it.”
“I don’t get it, either. I’ve experienced both environments and it really comes down to adapting. People choose to bypass adaptation it seems like,” she says, shrugging.
A gust of wind blows, causing snow to shake from the trees. The pair mutually decide to head back to the resort and proceed to make their way back to the lift.
