A heavy sigh.
Tessa shook her head as she sat in the locker room, her brunette tresses delayed in their motion.
About an hour prior, an incredibly bizarre scenario took place.
In the midst of Ricky Valero turning the quarterfinals match between Fujiko Mine and Evan Envi into his own personal sideshow, a strange instinct came over her. A nagging impulse.
Something that, in the moment, she was desperate enough to listen to.
It will throw him off his game. DO it.
Before she knew it, her lips were pressed against Evan’s. She would have to rely on the tape to catch his reaction. Her eyes were shut. It lasted a few moments.
It was an eternal silence.
She heard nothing. Saw nothing. Felt…?
Until the commotion began, and she pulled away. There was another instinct that took over.
Fujiko took over.
The next thing she knew, Evan was locked in Ecstasy, her dragon sleeper. Tessa was lost in confusion, but fortunately Fujiko was at the helm of things, and she felt her arm tightening around Evan’s neck.
Unfortunately, XENA’s attempt to help only lead to Fujiko’s early exit from the tournament, while Evan went on to win the Cup for the 2nd year in a row.
Aladina apologized after the fact, but the damage was done. And what was worse? That Evan got more satisfaction out of it all.
Not only did he win, but he had XENA to thank for it.
And that kiss…
Tessa blindy reached to her right and placed her hand over the iPhone XS max next to her.
She paused.
"Hey Siri, call Misha, mobile."
You got it. Calling Misha LeCavalier, mobile…
Tessa flipped the phone over, and tapped her index finger on the “speakerphone” button. A few seconds elapsed before a voice picked up on the other end. “Hello love,” Misha replied. A certain exhaustion clung to her voice, though she attempted to perk herself up. “How are you?” she asked.
"...I...I…"
The words to describe how she felt? She wasn’t sure they existed. Her brown eyes darted around the room, searching for the intangible words that could help answer the innocuous, simple query.
What felt like an hour passed.
"I...uhm...don’t know."
“Oh dear,” Misha replied. “That does not sound good at all. You are normally so lively when we speak.” Tessa could probably hear her shifting in the background as she took a seat on her couch. “Did something happen?” Misha asked with some concern in her voice. “Have you been harmed in any manner?”
"Uh…", was the only reply that would pass her teeth. Perhaps calling Misha at this juncture was a bad idea. It was increasingly obvious that she…
"The match."
It was a moment of clarity among the fog that refused to clear in her head. A lamplight that managed to shine through.
"It was a disaster, in more ways than one." The words didn’t seem to get cleared by her brain. They just poured out.
"Ricky Valero got involved, XENA got involved...I kissed Evan Envi? XENA got me disqualified by trying to hurt Ricky and then hurting Evan instead. I’m just…"
Frustration poured out of her in the form of tears.
"What just happened," she whispered to herself.
Misha began to understand. Well, any little bit anyway. Final Frontier had slipped her mind, admittedly.
“Oh...my. That seems like a bit of a wild time” The Calgary born woman took a moment to think. Tessa choked out a humorless laugh. “I, I am truly sorry,,” Misha replied. “I am aware much that tournament meant to you.” A tiny sigh escaped from Ms. LeCavalier. “How you are you holding up? Mentally?”
A part of her wanted to scream ‘NOT WELL, OBVIOUSLY.’ She refrained.
"The loss...it is what it is," She started. "I can get past that. Dina obviously wasn’t trying to hurt me. She was just trying to stop Ricky Valero from getting involved."
Tessa took a look at the shut door. Aladina was gently asked to give her some space, but she knew that the giant blonde was probably not far away. She exhaled, and continued.
"I just...don’t know where the impulse came from. I turned it into a dragon sleeper…" She tried to explain it away. "Maybe something of a legal distraction, I guess?"
“Aye, I see.” Misha took a moment to think. “I assume you mean the kiss, yes?” She thought even longer. “Love, may I ask you a question?” Misha didn’t wait for a response; she simply asked anyway. “Is it something you have thought about before?”
Tessa lightly raked her fingers over her face. Had she?
She wasn’t a fool. She knew about the massive amount of roses Evan sent. She stayed silent and coy about it. But she knew they were from him. She knew that he had some sort of feelings he was harboring.
There were plenty of people who showed a penchant for showing her affection on social media. But no one took it to that level. Not even Natalie McKinley, who was sure to have some feelings about it.
And Izzy?
And while she said nothing, Misha’s question sparked thought on it.
She hadn’t thought about it before.
So where did it come from, truly?
"N-no. I hadn’t. I mean, I’ve had some pretty solid evidence that he was into me, but he’s also done some pretty awful things to people I care about, so…" She trailed off.
"What do I do, Misha?" Her voice was small and weak as she presented the problem.
“Hmm,” Misha said. “That is a difficult question to answer.” Once again, Misha took a moment to think. “First, I believe you need to sit down and figure out your emotions. It could be that your kiss was the first thing to come to mind. Or, there could be an underlying reason behind it.
“Secondly, you need to take some time to rest and recover. There are things in the future that you must accomplish. You will need to have a clean mind and rested body in order to do so.”
Tessa forced an exhale. It was a hard truth.
"Think about my emotions. Take some time to rest and recover. OKay. I can do that."
She stood up, looking around the dressing room that she’d co-opted for her cool down session.
"Thank you, Misha. I’ll give it some thought."
Tessa bent down and took her phone in her hands.
"Gonna go for a drive and clear my head a bit more. Can we talk a bit later?"
“Of course,” Misa replied. “I am in for the evening. Kay is watching some program on the History channel as I play with the dogs. Therefore, please call me, if you need me.” As she spoke, a question formed in her mind. “Oh yes. How did Izzy preform? Was she victorious?”
"Tomorrow night," she recalled. "The awkward thing about all this is that we could be celebrating together, but it looks like she’s going to be the only one of the two of us with some good news after tomorrow night. Thanks Misha. Talk to you later."
“Goodbye, love.”
Ending the call, She slid the phone into the front pocket of the hoodie she had hanging nearby. Moments later, she had all her things gathered up.
She lingered for a few moments, with some faded hope that she would find the answer somewhere around her.
After a few moments, she determined she was only wasting time.
With a heavy sigh, she made her move out the door, and into the outside world.
