The scene opens to show the exterior of The Marshall - a pub in Greensboro. Sat at a table outside the pub, with a bottle of beer in his hand, is Rab McKinley; he is wearing a pair of black shorts and a replica Heart of Midlothian F.C. jersey.
Rab looks at the camera, and raises his bottle.
‘Cheers!’
He then takes a swig from the bottle, before placing it on the table.
‘Awrite there! Hou's it gaun? Fur those ay ye 'at don’t ken fa Ah am, allaw me tae introduce myself: mah nam is Rab McKinley; as ye can probably teel frae mah accent, I’m Scottish, an' I’m also one ay th' newest trainees in Lion's Den Fightin' Championships. Some ay ye micht ken mah coosin Natalie, fa was at one time a member ay th' Frontier Grapplin' Arts roster; th' inspiration fur me tae gie wrestlin' a try cam frae seein' mah wee coosin compete in FGA, an' elsewhaur.’
Rab smiles wryly.
‘Weel, Ah say “wee coosin,” althoogh if yoo’ve seen Natalie, yoo’ll ken she’s actually nae 'at wee - she’s actually quite muscular, loch mah opponent fur mah debut match: th' Princess ay Power, Maritza Diaz.’
There is then a pause; Rab frowns.
‘Nae, 'at doesn’t soond reit.’
He then scratches his forehead.
‘Ah hink Ah jist confused Maritza wi' She-Ra - Maritza’s nicknam is actually, “The Power Princess;” sorry abit 'at, Maritza.’
Rab gives an apologetic look towards the camera.
‘When thes match atween myself an' Maritza was annoonced a week an' a half ago, Ah hud conflictin' emotions - in fact, Ah still dae. I’m canty 'at I’m gonnae be gettin' tae compete in mah first proper match, but Ah woods prefer mah debut tae be against someain else. Maritza is one ay th' fowk in Lion’s Den 'at I’ve knoon th' longest - althoogh admittedly, 'at isn’t sayin' much, given 'at I’ve only bin haur a matter ay weeks.’
Rab pauses to have another swig of beer.
‘Ah mit Maritza when Ah attended th' tryit camp at th' end ay lest month, an' I’ve got naethin' bad whatsoever tae say abit 'er. I’m nae thrilled abit havin' tae fight 'er, an' she has said 'at she doesn’t want tae fight me either - mebbe we coods jist hae a dance aff, insteid.’
Rab smirks.
‘Oan second thooghts, no-ain wants tae see me dance - at leest, nae unless I’ve gotten several ay those…’
Rab casts his eyes towards the bottle of beer.
‘...doon mah neck beforehain.’
He then looks back in the direction of the camera.
‘I’m weel awaur ay Maritza’s backgroond in Muay Thai, an' sae I’m a bit woriat 'at she micht tak' mah heed aff. She’s certainly a mair skilled fighter than Ah am: afair Ah started trainin' tae be a professional wrestler, th' only experience ay fightin' Ah hud cam frae th' handful ay pub brawls 'at I’ve bin involved in - an' Ah don’t really want tae hae tae resort tae havin' tae gie an opponent a Glasgee kiss.’
Rab shakes his head.
‘Anyway, while Ah main be mair used tae kickin' a football than kickin' an opponent’s heed - an' by “football” Ah mean a proper, sphere-shaped ball, nae th' egg-shaped balls 'at ur used haur in th' US - thes match Ah hae comin' up against Maritza, is th' first opportunity fur me tae pit intae practice whit Ah hae learned sae far since Ah began mah wrestlin' trainin'. It’s also an opportunity fur me tae shaw 'at th' decision tae offer me a contract was a sensible one, an' sae I’m keen tae pit in a guid performance.’
Rab drinks some more of his beer, before continuing.
‘Th' best way fur me tae make a guid first impression woods ay coorse be fur me tae win - which is exactly whit Ah want tae dae oan Thursday; no-ain likes tae lose - an' I’m nae different. Ah definitely don’t want mah wrestlin' career tae begin wi' a loss, an' sae I’m aimin' tae be successful in mah debut match - which, unfortunately…’
There is a sigh from Rab.
‘...means 'at Maritza will hae tae suffer a loss in 'er debut.’
He then lets out another, longer sigh.
‘I’m sorry, Maritza. Th' reason Ah want tae beat ye isn’t coz Ah dislike ye - but 'en ye awreddy ken that; Ah need tae beat ye if only tae prove 'at Ah wasn’t bein' an divit when Ah thooght 'at Ah coods be a wrestler.’
Rab smiles meekly.
‘Ance thes is ower, Maritza, hopefully yer next match will be against some knobdobber, fa deserves a reit guid kickin'.’
As Rab reaches for his bottle of beer, the scene fades to black.
