A few days have passed in the world of FRONTIER Grappling Arts, and within those days an announcement was made regarding the inaugural card of the promotions’ flagship program, Wednesday Weekly Combat. It seems, after watching the duo spout out competing vignettes over the span of a few days, FRONTIER’s management ultimately decided to go with what the competitors wanted. James Weck, the young stallion who is returning home and looking for some vengeance, against Jared James, a former figure head of another independent promotion who is returning to compete in the United States after a year… just trying to claim his first major championship. How will this end? That remains to be seen. All one can be sure of, however, is that these two fierce competitors will certainly be looking to make some noise when they compete in Combat’s first main event.
The scene opens up to Times Square in New York City. The city that never sleeps is still at it, and as we look about at the flashing lights a sense of excitement seems to be in the air. Amongst all of the hustle is the one and only Jared James, one of FGA’s original competitors. He does not stand out all too much, blending in relatively well with the crowd with his red and black flannel shirt, faded jeans, and long dirty blonde hair draped down around his face. He instantly sees us, and smiles. For Jared, being here in New York City is a treat that he has rarely gotten to enjoy over the course of his four and a half year career. As he stands at one of the most famous destinations in the entire world, Jared looks around him and truly seems at peace. For this twenty-six year old Iowa native, all is at ease… he has no need to worry, because for Jared James things are only looking up.
Jared James
“Truthfully, if you would have told me back in May of 2007 that four and a half years later I would still be doing this, I would have laughed at you. Initially, when I first stepped foot into the business, this was all just a way for me to do what I love… and make a little bit of money on the side.”
That last comment causes Jared to chuckle, as he reflects on just how little he truly made when he first laced his boots.
“Yet here I stand before you, a man of twenty-six years of age who can’t help but continue to step foot into the squared circle. Has it been a rough pass? Well, frankly, I could not imagine any road in this business that is an easy one… unless, of course, you have a certain Connection.”
A sly little wink is given to us by Jared after that reference to The Harvard Connection.
“So here I am, standing in New York City. Not only is this the largest citizen in the world, with nearly anything your heart desires available to you, but it is also one of the few places in the world where people go to achieve their dreams. You see, New York City is the place of opportunity… the place where fortunes are earned, and names are created. Derek Jeter, Patrick Ewing, Joe Namath, these are just a few of the famous individuals who became larger than life personalities thanks to their connection to the Big Apple. Now, for Jared James, it is his chance to link himself up with this area… an area where if you can make, well than you’ll be around for a long time.”
The grin across Jared James faces is enormous, the excitement in his eyes apparent.
“Now I know what you must be think. ‘Hey Jared, don’t you realize that this Wednesday on Combat you’ll actually be in New Jersey?’ Well yes ladies and gentlemen, I am well aware of that. This, of course, can make all of this New York nonsense a little confusing in the grand scheme of things. So allow me to rewind for you fine folks, and get right to the point of what I am trying to say to each and every one of you. I feel as if, in this stage in my career, I am getting a fresh start. In some aspects, just like FGA, you could potentially argue that I am brand spanking new. I have come a long way as a person, made some decisions in the past that I regret, and have ultimately decided that a new direction is needed if I want to have success in this industry. So, just like FGA, I need to start off someplace small. That means, for both FRONTIER Grappling Arts and I, a new era in the professional wrestling industry will be getting kicked off in Edison, New Jersey. It may be a little ugly at first, after all we all need to work out our kinks before we can reach our full potential, but that is why you start small. One just needs to maintain the goal in the back of their mind, so as not to lose sight of where things are heading. For FRONTIER Grappling Arts… well, that means a big stage like Madison Square Garden here in NYC. For me… well, that means headlining that big even in Madison Square Garden.
That is why I am here ladies and gentlemen, to start anew. Things have not quite gone the way I would have liked over the past four and a half years. Yes, I may have come a long way from Des Moines, Iowa and have grown significantly as a person… but I still feel as if a part of me is missing. A major heavyweight championship belt is what has eluded me over the span of my career. Being the best a promotion has to offer, that is why I came into this industry… and I have failed to do that. Not with FRONTIER however. With FRONTIER, this will all change.”
After what seemed like an eternity standing in the middle of the sidewalk in Time Square, Jared James begins to walk. He does not need to walk far until he reaches some steps, which lead to a subway. He goes down, takes care of all he needs to, and heads to a nearby empty bench. The atmosphere is very different from the bright lights and loud noises of above. It is darker, and while the noises are still loud from tourists and trains flying by the tone of these sounds seems to have a more menacing sound to them. Jared looks up at us, a smile still plastered across his face.
“My biggest challenge as I head towards my first encounter in a FGA ring is the overall style of the promotion. Back in Connecticut Forum Wrestling, things were a bit more relaxed. I could get by on what little actual skill I had back in the day, and instead rely on my ability to schmooze the crowd with my words. It was my strongest trait, and boy did I plan to it. Yet after a while, near the end of my run in New England, things began to fade for me. The crowd started to see through my act, and from there started to see that I was not nearly as gifted as I preached. Don’t get me wrong, from the time I stepped foot in Todd Vicker’s office in Connecticut to the time that company closed its doors I had improved a substantial amount. It just happened to be that, after I finally moved onward past the New England area, that I saw real improvement. My days wrestling in Simcoe County, facing off against the likes of Thomas Watson and Dom Harter, helped me more than any time I set foot in the ring with Baby Bling or Simon Sensation. Then I went down to Nevada, where I took place in some of the fastest matches of my career. The gentlemen of Ring of Pride worked me to my limit, making sure I was on the ball at all times. Oh and how could I forget my brief time in the state of Georgia… where in Peach State Wrestling I faced off against some of the best young talent. They helped revive that spark in me, allowing me to appreciate the art form is professional.
All of these have combined allow me to present to you what you will be seeing in the ring in Edison, New Jersey on Wednesday night. A man who is able to combine the amateur wrestling background he acquired in the state of Iowa, with the athletic maneuvers I have obtained over my years of competing around North America. It will enable me to show that, despite my size, I am the fiercest competitor this young promotion has to offer. Not Ace Andrews, the same man who I have seen disgraced from many a promotion, Preston Blake or Chandler Scott, both of whom just can’t buy the fire that years of sacrifice and hardship create within you, nor any of the other competitors on this fine roster. They, simply put, do not want this nearly as bad as I do. They, as much as they may claim, will not be willing to do the things I am willing to do to my body, my mind, and my soul to bring this promotion to prominence. That definitely includes the man whom I will be facing off against in Wednesday’s main event… James Weck.”
What was once a vicious look across Jared’s face now turns into a slight smile. Just from Weck’s recent comments, the Iowa native knows that he is in his head.
“Yes, good ol’ James Weck. For those of you who are unaware of my days in Colorado as Director of Programming for Rocky Mountain PRO, which I can assume is probably many of you to be honest, James Weck and I have both been on the same payroll before in our careers. Our roles were vastly different; he being a former mid-level champion on the active roster and I being the authoritative figure, but we did have our runs in every now and then. At the time, I thought everything was okay between the two of us. Yes, we had our differences every now and then… but honestly, who doesn’t in this business? Then my whole perception of who James Weck is as an individual was changed, just from one little video clip.”
James slightly tilts his head down, shaking his head with a slight grin across his face.
“I suppose it is always the little things in people that you miss. You see Weck, before this past week I thought of you as a troubled individual. Despite your harsh demeanor, I sympathized with you for your struggles in the realm of amateur wrestling. After all, in my mind, being barred from competing in the sport you truly loved would ultimately lead to one becoming a little sour. I thought you had a quality about you that was redeemable, something that I was never able to quite grasp onto while in the Rockies. Now I clearly understand why you were never able to get out of that shadow… why you, one of the most talented performers Rocky Mountain PRO had to offer, could not take that next step towards glory. It was because, all along, the self-hyped James Weck is truly a coward.
Yes Weck, I called you a coward. You may scoff at the very notion of you, the big ol’ mean James Weck, being a coward… but if you were to look in the mirror, you would see that I am correct. Now I could only imagine what you are thinking. Perhaps you think is just an empty attempt of mine to throw you off your game, to question yourself into thinking that maybe you don’t have what it takes to defeat me. Well Weck, I can safely assure you that nothing of the sorts is being done. You are in fact one of the best I have seen in my lifetime, one of the few whom I would not being discouraged over losing too. Oh no, this is just me simply stating a fact, a reason if you will as to why I will ultimately win this contest between you and I Wednesday night in Edison, New Jersey.”
The smirk fades away from Jared James’s as Mr. Nice Guy looks to get down to business.
“You see James, after much thought about you as individual, going through some of your actions both here in your short time in FGA as well as your extended stay in RMP; I started to notice a pattern of behavior. No matter where you seem to go Weck, you just can’t help but find a way for people to feel sorry for you. When you came into Rocky Mountain PRO, you immediately tried to establish yourself as this scorn individual who got screwed over by the USA Wrestling officials. And you know what, I’ll admit it worked. For the longest I actually bought into your sob story, feeling sorry for you and what those men did to you. You did not stop there though, after all that would have been far too easy. Instead you latched onto the then reigning RMP Rocky Mountain Heavyweight Champion, Jackhammer. You two looked as if you were going to take over the company… looking to mold it into precisely what you wanted it to be. How did that end up James? Well, like all of the modern ‘Dream Teams’ yours was not nearly as successfully as originally envisioned. It only took a couple of months before things started to crumble between Jackhammer and yourself, until finally you both ended up finding your way out of the company. Now you come here, preaching about you were ‘forced’ to team up with him in order to ‘get close enough to take him down’ since I was unable to do it myself. Well James, from where I stand it looked like you made a conscience decision to work with that man… and the only reason you were never able to knock him down, was because you didn’t have the guts to do it yourself. So now you preach sympathy, painting me out as the villain because the business you loved has been corrupted. Sorry to break it you James, but this industry was like this far before I put my fingers in it. All Sean Douglas and I did with Rocky Mountain PRO was try our best to bring the company success. Looking back, is it possible to say we made some missteps along the way? Of course it is, because you know what James… we did. That does not, however, mean that we were at fault for your inability to reach the top of that place… to earn the right to shape it and mold it how you saw fit.”
A look of disgust is in Jared’s eyes, as he reflects on some of the things that James Weck has said about him. Jared knows he made mistakes with Rocky Mountain PRO, but the way Weck has tried to rub his nose into it as caused him great discomfort.
“Your cowardly persona does not stop there though James, oh far from it. You go on initially how Rocky Mountain PRO had to force you to mail your championship belt back, remember? You make it out as a symbol of your toughness, how you won’t let anybody take anything from you. Want to know what it sounds like to everybody else, in the real world James? To us, it sounds like you were throwing a fit because you were unable to have what was no longer yours. You pouted, just like every good coward does, and made the company to force you to hand the belt back.”
Just the mere notion of Weck’s actions sends Jared James into a slight fit of laughter.
“All of this… and you, of all people, have the audacity to call me out for my actions?! Hell James, at least I am fully capable of owning up to my past. I know damn well that I was a lot of hype with nothing to back it up. I know that, am ashamed of that, and will do everything in my power to correct my mistake. I also know that I screwed up in Rocky Mountain PRO, among other places. I don’t dwell on them, I acknowledge them and move on… like an adult. Perhaps these are practices that you should take James, rather than dwell on what happened to you with USA Wrestling, or even in RMP. Then, maybe, you’ll be able to be half the man you claim yourself as. Perhaps then you’ll be capable of carrying the burden of being the top man in a professional wrestling promotion, something I have been striving for my entire four and a half year career."
Jared James gets up from his seat and starts to head towards exit of the subway, looking to head back into Times Square.
"Then again James, we both know what is at stake Wednesday night in Edison… don’t we. The winner of that main event bout will not only get the claim of winning FGA’s first main event, but will establish themselves immediately as one, if not the, top dog here in FRONTIER. And trust me James; I am well aware of what I am up against. I have seen what you can do to individuals inside that ring, and what I as a competitor need to do in order to come out of my contest with you victorious. You are a straight shooter, much like many of the great amateur wrestlers I faced back during my high school days in the wrestling capital of the world, Iowa. So I know what I am up against James, and I have a general idea of how to take care of you. The problem for you, however, is you have no idea what you are up against. No matter how much film you watch from my days in CFW, you just will not be capable of realizing how much I have changed as a competitor. That is something that gives me a definite advantage, and something that you should darn well know I will try my very best on capitalizing during our in-ring encounter Wednesday night in New Jersey.”
The sights and sounds of Time Square erupt around Jared once again, who graciously allows us to adjust to all of the activity around us. His demeanor is relaxed out here in the open air, a confidence radiating around him as he prepares himself mentally for Wednesday’s challenge.
“I am ready for what you have to offer James Weck. I know you will give me one hell of a fight, because I know you are one hell of a competitor. I will not, however, allow myself to fail the task I have set before me. I realize how pivotal this match is to my goal of claiming the FGA Heavyweight Championship. So if you have any notions in that head of yours that I shall simply lie down without a fight, showing each and every fan in the Inman Sports Club that Jared James is more than capable of handling the physical responsibilities FGA requires… well James, you may want to rethink your strategy going into Wednesday’s contest, because all it’ll do is see you falling flat on your face.
After all, ladies and gentlemen, I am Mr. Jared James! I am the man who will not only defeat James Weck, changing his opinion on this lightweight from Des Moines, Iowa forever, but the man who will also take FRONTIER Grappling Arts to extreme new heights!”
As Jared James looks around at the bright lights, tall buildings, and people who seem to hover all around him, the camera begins to pan upwards. We slowly work our way into an aerial shot, where we get a beautiful image of Times Square at night as the scene fades away to black.
