Being A Coward Is Not a Legitimate Career

“I have seen something. Something that can only be described as beautiful. And I liked what I saw.”
Hana speaks plainly, bluntly, and before she even comes into focus; when she does, however, she’s all grin with her hands thrust deep in the pockets of her black down jacket. Snow cascades around her, but she is hardly bothered, kicking little tufts as she continues in her own little world.
“No, nothing as base and crude as inclement weather, but something just as pure. You all witnessed it, surely, that all too fleeting moment after the cacophony and chaos where history was on the right course. But as it goes...nothing good can last.”
“Despite that singular moment - one that showed a glimpse of the future to be - it seems almost poetic that paths cross yet again. I’m no believer in destiny or fate...but even I must admit that someone is patting themselves on the back for this.”
“I can’t exactly fault them. It gives the other unfortunate teams comfort knowing that they didn’t draw the loaded round in this game of Russian Roulette. And it gets the reunion out of the way early, with stakes high, sure...but not as high as they otherwise would be.”
“In an ideal world this match would’ve come after myself and Majima left a pile of teams in our wake...but so be it. We’ll instead make an example. In some ways it’s a greater message.”
“Terrence. I’m glad to see that you’ve taken the old saying ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ to heart. Look at you, clinging to Nest like a parasite. Could it be that you’ve finally understood the truth that I’ve so plainly spoken of before? That you’ve been used by Nest all along? It’s fine if you understand and accept this, but you keep hiding behind the guise of friendship. And what, exactly, has this ‘friendship’ of yours gotten? I’ve come closer to dethroning Nest than you have because I’m smart enough to know that friendships don’t exist here.”
“You’ll never be anything here, Terrence, if all you want to do is follow Nest around like a devoted little puppy, nipping at the heels and being thrown bones out of pity rather than respect.”
“Do you even remember what happened the last time the four of us met? You couldn’t beat us. You tried so hard but it was all for naught...and you, Terrence, cowered out. Dissension in the ranks...or merely a mistake. Either way it shows cracks. Cracks in the form of Terrence being afraid of the big bad Adder. And I’ve given plenty of reason. Sure, you’ll brush it off and say I’m crazy, but you know I’m right. Deep down my words ring true. You’re using Nest as much as he’s using you. Or has your ‘friendship’ not been beneficial to your career?"
“It’s telling, Nest, that you fared slightly better with the kids against the mess that was my team...and even then you couldn’t squeeze out a victory. Sure, nor could my side but you’ll have to remember that a simple victory over you is not what all this is about. You’re weakening, Nest, little by little, day by day... In a war of attrition the first side to sweat is the side to lose…”
As if to prove her point, Hana slowly runs an index finger across her forehead and cackles at the lack of sweat present.
“And now you’re just being greedy. Not content to sit high and mighty you’ve set your sights on secondary glory. The aforementioned bone to your puppy dog, no doubt. Or maybe...insurance...something to have when what you hold so dear is snatched away. Regardless, your hanger-on will be your downfall, Nest, and if you doubt that...why don’t you ask yourself why you bothered to check on your partner in the middle of a match.”
“It all comes back around. Your misguided and outdated views of friendship will be your own undoing, Nest. Terrence’s incompetence has cost you already...and it will again. Teams don’t need to be friends. They just need to work. We understand this. We understand that getting hung up on camaraderie makes you lose sight of what’s truly important.”
“Which is exactly why this little tournament of sorts will prove one thing: That ‘tag teams’ consisting of friends are a liability to the namesake.”
“You need to get rid of the albatross around your neck, Nest. Because sooner or later it’s going to cost you...and then it’ll be too late.”
“One day, you’ll thank me. And I’ll laugh. Because I’ve always been right and you’ve always been a fool.”
Hana signs off by kicking a pile of snow forward, leaving everything covered in white...and thus darkness.
