Her hair was frazzled, a mess really. Her eyes looked stained as the black makeup surrounding them melted away, sliding down her cheekbones. She had her head cocked, looking at the pitiful reflection staring back at her. A moment passed and her lips began to tremble, so she pressed them together, straightening her neck and narrowing her eyes. At the very bottom of the mirror, one could see her fists clench together, but that’s not where she was looking. Her narrowed eyes stared straight ahead, glued to themselves.
“Did you think it was going to be easy?” Becky’s voice was soft, barely a whisper. It was unclear at that moment if she was expecting her sad reflection answer, but of course it didn’t. “Rex warned you. Not everyone approaches this business like he does. Not everyone plays by the rules.
“That should be painfully obvious to you now,” she continued, raising a hand to her cheek and touching it gingerly. “But you’re not going to let them walk all over you. The seeds of doubt are planted, but you can rip them back out before water ever hits the soil.”
“You okay kid?” Rex’s voice called from behind her, and her line of sight was drawn away from the reflection for a moment, that chipper smile returning to her expression as she looked over her shoulder.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Just- thinking,” she muttered, offering another cheery smile before turning back to her reflection.
“Alright, well Mase and I are getting back in the ring if you want to jump back on the saddle,” she hollered an affirmation, feigning excitement as the joy dissipated from her expression. Once again, she stared at the sad reflection in the mirror.
“You can be better than all of them. You have nothing to doubt,” then she nodded at herself, leaning over the sink to splash water on her face, using a towel to wipe away the makeup. Taking a couple of steps backwards, she glanced at the reflection one last time, “nothing.”
The Main Event. I must say, the circumstances are a bit strange to me, none of it really seems to make sense. But- I don’t think any of that matters, because Mason and I are in the main event. Not just us, but we’re teaming up with the first and only APEX Champion, the best of the best, Nest. This is a huge opportunity for us, for me, to learn more, to gain more experience, and to prove that we’re not just another couple of young kids who try their hand at this trade and wash out after a few months.
Because this business runs in our veins. Mason’s more than mine, perhaps. But over the past few months? Wrestling has consumed me. I have become enamored with it, and I’m not going to let anyone tell me I’m not good enough. Instead, I’m going to kick them in their teeth and prove them wrong. Which is exactly what I plan to do at Pride this week.
On paper, I lost to Keegan Hightower a couple of weeks ago. But in reality? I forced him to resort to cheating just to beat me. This week, I’m faced with what seems to be an insurmountable task. The Butcher… The Black Adder… and The Prince. Three incredible talents by themselves, a force to be reckoned with together, and I know none of them are above doing what Keegan did. But this time I’ve got two people watching my back who won’t let it happen. So I’m prepared to climb in there and kick every single one of them right in the mouth.
Even you, Prince. I haven’t forgotten our first encounter, but I know you haven’t forgotten our last. You can call me nasty all you want, but when I beat you again you won’t be able to deny my talent. Butcher, you seemed to be falling off the radar for a while, but now you’ve got a friend and he’s reinvigorated you. And I have a feeling you’ll be a lot scarier in that regard, but what happens when Mason beats you again, and you fall even farther down the ladder?
Hana Song, I don’t know much about you other than your aspirations for being champion, and the fact that you spit venom in my partner’s eyes. We’re going to make you pay for that, and when we beat you, with Nest at our side, you’ll fall down the ladder right next to Butcher.
I’m looking forward to this match. For the chance to learn, the chance to shine. But more than anything, I’m looking forward to erasing all of the doubt, and proving that I belong here in the Lion’s Den.
