Crutches

Atop of his favorite tree, the first ever LDFC Apex Champion places the title across his lap. Nest looked down and tilted his head, chuckling to himself. “I’ve stared at it...ever since...I stared during the journey home that night, and I’ve continued to stare. I’m staring until it goes away. Until it vanishes.”
Nest strokes his beard.
“It’s a weird feeling. Not only did I beat little miss Princess two times in a row, but I did it for the one and only prize this place has. Not bad for an uncoordinated fat ass whose only physical activity consisted of climbing trees.” Nest grins, still looking down at the belt. Suddenly the grin turns into a slight frown. “But as happy as I am to say I finally accomplished something in my twenty plus years...having this is a heavy burden to bare. Everyone in Lion’s Den finally have a tangible that will motivate them even further. There are 36 eyes on my prize.”
Cracking his neck and knuckles, Nest smiles devilishly. “Just know, no one’s eyes will be on my back. You can see a lot from the top of the tree...and now I see another golden finch inching her way up the branches, looking to dwell in my Nest.”
“By no means is Bree Nelson ahead of the pack for the Apex title. Not a knock on her talent but the better part her time has been in team action. I don’t know what it’s like to have to depend on someone else to win.” The champion scratches the side of his face and chuckles. “Besides, not too sure if I’m good at that team player thing. Bree, however, is. She’s coming off a victory just as impressive as mine. Inside the ring, dare I say she’s faster than myself? More resourceful that’s for damn sure. Finagling your way around when you’re clearly outsized is smart. I’m hip, so don’t think I’m expecting to over power my way through this match.”
Nest tilts his head. “Bree you have many handicaps going into this match with me, your hearing not being one of them. There will be no Donovan Cross to tag in when you’re feeling a bit too fatigued...winded birdie.” Nest smiles, finally looking up from his title. “But perhaps your biggest weakness is the fact that I’ve already psyched you out. My ‘Sleep tight’ comment was simply a test. You were timid and assumed that I was automatically trying to get inside of your head because I’m your future opposition. Upon the thought of offending me, it weighed down on you. I tested your self-confidence and you failed.”
“How can you stand on your own if your Cross is your crutch?” Nest held his hand out as a goldfinch graced his palm. He looked down at it and brought it in closer. “The second season of Pride will begin with you entering my dwelling and learning how to spread your wings. Stop thinking you’re going up against the Apex Champion. The title is just that. Be strong enough to see through the fact that I haven’t lost since my very first match. I’m just Nest...nothing more, but nothing less.”
Nest sighs as he lets go of the goldfinch and watches it fall to the ground. “I’m just like you, trying to find footing in this biz. Don’t let my success and my nature intimidate you, Bree. For if it does, you and I won’t be in for a very long night. Nest assured.”
