BEST OF 7: MATCH 3
(Gonsalves leads 2-0)
Owen Gonsalves vs. Chandler Scott
The lights dim as “Animal Ghosts” bursts through the speakers. Multi-colored lasers soon begin to shoot out from the stage. Once their attention has been captured, the crowd turns to the entryway to prepare for the man that's about to walk out. At the 25 second mark, Chandler Scott pushes through the curtain to a loud ovation from the crowd.
J.A. Aldridge: The following contest, scheduled for one fall, is Match Number 3 in the Best of 7 Series. Introducing first, hailing from Westwood, Massachusetts! Weighing in at 210 pounds… CHANDLER SCOTT!
Chandler heads down the ramp with purpose. Once he's reached the end of the aisle, he rolls himself into the ring just as the lights come back on. Chandler times his ascension onto the middle ropes with the beginning of the chorus. The crowd sings along with the chorus while Chandler poses with outstretched arms. When the chorus ends, Chandler hops off the middle ropes, turns and lands on his feet. He begins tugging on the top rope as he awaits for his opponent.
Kris Cruise: Chandler Scott comes into tonight’s match down 0-2 in this series. This isn’t an elimination game, but if he were to lose and go down 0-3, it’s all but over.
Stephy Auger: Yes it would be. Chandler still talks a good game. But he’s not what he used to be. Cordy Stevenson told us that two years ago, but you were all too hard headed to listen to her. This isn’t 2015. This isn’t 2018. It’s 2023 and while he can still do a little something, he’s lost some steps. Thus far, he has shown that he’s not in Owen’s level and I don’t see that changing tonight. Everything he tried to do in those first two matches, Owen had a reversal for it.
Kris Cruise: Chandler has to come out and fight like his back is against the wall. He’s got to throw everything and then some at Owen. At this point, he’s got nothing to lose.
The hard bass of Run The Jewels’ “Blockbuster Night Part I” causes the floor to vibrate as the crowd instantly come to their feet, knowing fully well who is about to make his entrance. All eyes are on the curtain as they wait for his arrival. A white bright light flashes at every beat, and the fans in attendance are slamming anything they can to the beat.
'Bunches and bunches
Punches is thrown until you’re frontless
Oodles and oodles
Bang bullets at suckers' noodles
Last album? Voodoo!
Proved that we was fuckin' brutal
I’m talking crazy, half past the clock is cuckoo'
As soon as the incomparable Killer Mike kicks into his verse, the white flashing light stops and Owen Gonsalves bursts through the curtain with a pace that matches the rhythm of the track. He storms his way to the top of the entranceway and pauses to soak in the electric energy from the crowd, with a smirk on his face as he rolls his wrists while subtly mouthing the words to the song. Once El-P's verse begins, Wristlock Sinatra immediately begins to walk down towards the ring as he has his hands outstretched, his eyes staying focused on the ring he’s about to go to work in.
J.A. Aldridge: His opponent, hailing from Melbourne, Australia! Weighing in at 205 pounds! He is “Indestructible”... OWEN GONSALVES!
'Look at these kiddies, Mike
I'm a rat-a-tat 'em for living
I deal in dirty work
Do the deed and then dash
Ditch 'em'
Having made his way to the bottom of the ramp, Owen starts shadow striking to the camera at the bottom of the ramp before feigning a rolling elbow in the camera's direction as El-P says 'ditch 'em' to which the camera reacts accordingly. He paces around the ring, keeping his energy high before plodding up the steps, wiping his feet as soon as he steps on the apron. He moves down the apron and faces the crowd, mouthing a few words to a few of the fans in the front row before he enters the ring. He immediately goes to a corner and begins to warm up and stretch as he awaits the start of the match.
Kris Cruise: Owen Gonsalves didn’t come into this series with a chip on his shoulder. He came in with a boulder on his shoulder. He is hell bent on reminding everyone, specially Chandler, just who the hell he is.
Stephy Auger: I’ll give the bastard credit, he has outwrestled Chandler at every turn. But if I’m Owen, I don’t ease up off the gas. I go even harder. I don’t let Chandler get even an ounce of hope of trying to cut into this lead and get back into this series. For Owen, he should keep his foot on Chandler’s neck and not let up. Chandler has proven that he’s got no answer for what Owen has thrown at him, so why switch it up. Fight your fight and get one step closer to finishing this series off.
The bell sounds as Gonsalves and Scott stare each other down from opposite corners of the ring. The referee motions for them to get after it, but neither man move. They completely ignore the official, and everything else around them, as they never break eye contact.
"OOOOOHHHHH O-WEN GON-SAAAALLLL-VESSSS!"
"OOOOOHHHHH O-WEN GON-SAAAALLLL-VESSSS!"
"OOOOOHHHHH O-WEN GON-SAAAALLLL-VESSSS!"
"OOOOOHHHHH O-WEN GON-SAAAALLLL-VESSSS!"
Kris Cruise: We’ve got some very vocal Owen fans in the crowd here tonight. But neither man is letting that effect them.
Stephy Auger: You can feel the intensity, Cruise.
Both grapplers slowly make their way out of their respective corners. They slowly iinch towards the center of the ring before engaging in a snug collar-and-elbow tie up. After jockeying for position, Gonsalves starts to move Scott back. Scott then slows things down before moving Gonsalves back across the ring. Gonsalves then quickly pivots before muscling Scott across the ring and into the corner. Just as the ref is about to give them to the count of five to break it up, Scott takes Gonsalves, switches spots and presses him up against the turnbuckles. The referee gives them to the count of five to break it up.
Ref: ONE... TWO... THREE... FOUR...
As soon as both grapplers start to let go, Scott doubles Gonsalves over with repeated right hooks to the midsection.
Stephy Auger: There you go!
Kris Cruise: Not exactly the cleanest break from Chandler.
Stephy Auger: Hey, he’s down 0-2. If I were him, I would’ve poked Owen right in the eyes!
Scott knocks Gonsalves upright with a hard European Uppercut. He then goes for an irish whip. Gonsalves reverses, sending Scott hard into the far corner. Gonsalves runs across the ring and snaps Scott's head back with a running European Uppercut!
NO!
Scott slips out of the way, causing Gonsalves to crash arm-first into the corner.
Kris Cruise: Chandler missed that corner running uppercut earlier in the series, now it’s Owen that misses.
Scott waves Gonsalves towards him. Gonsalves stumbles back, turns and gets brought down with an arm drag. Gonsalves returns to his feet before getting brought back down with another arm drag. A third arm drag returns Gonsalves to the mat. Scott quickly drops to a kneeling positioning before slapping on an under-arm bar.
Kris Cruise: Chandler hasn’t wasted any time taking it right to Owen Gonsalves.
Stephy Auger: He said it himself. Time’s running out.
The ref gets down and asks Gonsalves if he wants to give up. When he refuses, Scott adds insults to injury by slapping Gonsalves across the head.
Kris Cruise: That’s not going to sit well with Owen.
Stephy Auger: Apparently he didn’t learn his lesson from the last time he tried this.
Chandler transitions into a wristlock as he returns to a vertical base. Scott twists the arm before adding insult to injury by nudging Gonsalves' head with the toe of his boot. Gonsalves uses his free arm to point up at Scott to scold him. Scott responds with a toe kick to the back of the head. He connects with another toe kick. Scott continues to taunt Gonsalves while scraping his boot across the head. Gonsalves responds with a kip up before reversing into an arm wrench.
Kris Cruise: Chandler got caught again getting cocky. Again!
Stephy Auger: Owen tried to warn him!
The cheers continue as Gonsalves tries to yank Scott's arm out of its socket over and over and over again. Scott eventually drops down to a knee. The moment he starts to get back up, Gonsalves yanks the arm again, dropping Scott back down to a knee. Scott uses his free arm to point over and scold Owen. Gonsalves responds by standing over Scott, hooking the arm with his left arm before using the right to paintbrush Scott with slaps across the back of the head.
Kris Cruise: Oh man, Chandler’s not going to like that.
Stephy Auger: Owen’s throwing it right back in his face.
Gonsalves continues to attack the arm with an overhook before Scott battles back to a vertical base. He reaches over with his free arm and presses up underneath Gonsalves' chin before moving him across the ring into the ropes. The ref is quick to go over and give both grapplers to the count of five to break it up.
Ref: ONE... TWO... THREE... FOUR
As soon as both grapplers make a clean break, Scott is quick to go for an irish whip. Gonsalves is even quicker to counter, sending him into the far ropes. Scott returns off the rebound before Gonsalves runs him over with a running shoulder block.
NO!
Scott remains on his feet! He smirks as he gets right up in Gonsalves' face. Gonsalves snarls before taking off into another set of ropes. He goes for another running shoulder block. But again, Scott braces for impact and remains on his feet. Scott shakes his head at Gonsalves while wiping off his chest. He then tells Owen that he has to put his whole body into it.
Kris Cruise: The mind games weren’t working before. But I’m pretty sure they are now!
Annoyed, Gonsalves takes off into another set of ropes. But unbeknownst to him, Scott is right behind him! As soon as Owen's back hits the ropes, Chandler sends him over the top to the floor with a running clothesline!
Kris Cruise: Owen fell right into the trap!
Stephy Auger: This is what Scott wanted. He wanted to get between his ears and force him into a mistake.
Scott walks away from the ropes while thumbing behind him. He then stops, looks and sees Gonsalves starting to pick himself up off the floor. So he takes off into the near ropes. Scott picks up speed as he runs across the ring, leaps through the ropes and knocks Gonsalves down with a suicide dive!
Kris Cruise: Scott wipes out Gonsalves on the outside!
Scott takes Gonsalves and brings him back to his feet... before ramming him back-first against the guardrail! He then turns and rams Gonsalves back-first against the edge of the apron! Scott turns and rams him right back against the guardrail before ramming him against the edge of the apron! He then takes Gonsalves and rams him back-first against the side of the ring steps!
Kris Cruise: Chandler’s coming out aggressive!
Stephy Auger: I think we both pointed out that this is what he had to do. Whatever he had in mind for Match 1 and 2, that clearly didn’t work. Tonight, he’s come out meaner, more aggressive. He’s got control now.
While Gonsalves is down, Scott kicks off the top half of the steps. He then gets Gonsalves in position before delivering a snap suplex across the bottom half of the steps! Gonsalves bounces off the steps before rolling over into the prone position.
Kris Cruise: Did you hear that thud?
Stephy Auger: Owen’s in a bad way.
The referee is telling Scott to bring the action back inside. Scott ignores him and continues to stomp away on Gonsalves' back. He pulls Gonsalves back to his feet, lifts him up and throws him down across the top of the guardrail with a front suplex. Gonsalves continues to hang over the railing until a high knee lift from Scott knocks him into the crowd!
Kris Cruise: Chandler is taking the fight right to Owen!
Stephy Auger: Yeah, and that fight has now spilled into the crowd!
Scott rolls back in, then back across out the other side of the ring post to restart the count. He pulls Gonsalves back to his feet again and catches him with a European Uppercut before throwing him down across the top of the guardrail. Gonsalves remains crotched across the rail while Scott nails him with a knife edge chop. Scott pulls his arm back before whacking him across the chest with another knife edge chop. A third stinging knife edge chop echoes throughout the arena. Scott then sizes Gonsalves up before nailing him with a knife edge chop that knocks him to the floor.
Scott pulls Gonsalves back to his knees and doubles him over with a knee strike before rolling him back inside. Scott slides back in, takes Gonsalves and slams him face-first into the top turnbuckle. Instead of turning Gonsalves around, Scott keeps Gonsalves turns away from him. From there, he delivers a series of shoulder thrusts to the back. Gonsalves finally gets turned around before he gets caught with a hard European Uppercut. Scott takes control of his wrist before whipping him hard into the far corner. The turnbuckles rattle as soon as Gonsalves' back collides with them. Gonsalves starts to stagger out of the corner before Scott scoops him up from the side and brings him down with a pendulum backbreaker. He makes the cover.

Kris Cruise: I think it’s pretty clear at this point that Chandler is targeting Owen’s back. He’s softening him up for something.
Scott pulls Gonsalves back to his feet and doubles him over with a knee to the midsection. After getting caught with a second knee, Gonsalves starts to fight back with back elbows to the midsection. Scott puts a stop to this with a clubbing shot across the back before bringing him down with a russian leg sweep. Scott rolls over and makes the cover.

Scott pulls Gonsalves back to his feet and delivers a headbutt before whipping him into the ropes. When Gonsalves returns, Gonsalves gets brought down with a tilt-a-whirl sideslam!

Scott picks up Gonsalves, heads into the corner and slams him face-first into the top turnbuckle again. Gonsalves gets turned around before Scott snaps his head back with repeated European Uppercuts. He then brings Gonsalves out of the corner before delivering an irish whip. Scott goes for another tilt-a-whirl slam off the rebound, but Gonsalves counters with a tilt-a-whirl Guillotine Choke!
Kris Cruise: OH! Owen caught him! He caught him in the choke!
Stephy Auger: You can’t relax against Owen, not even for a second! Chandler tried to go to the well again and now look at him!
The crowd cheers while Gonsalves cinches in the hold. Scott remains doubled over while Gonsalves hangs on him with the bodyscissors applied. The referee asks Scott if he wants to give up. Scott refuses. After slowly slipping his left arm around Gonsalves' neck, Scott grabs Gonsalves' tights with his right hand. He then lets out a groan as he slowly lifts Gonsalves up and reverses the Guillotine Choke into a Kneecap Brainbuster! He’s met with applause before making the cover.

Gonsalves gets the shoulder up.
Kris Cruise: Tremendous reversal out of the flying guillotine into that variation of the brainbuster, but he only gets two.
Stephy Auger: He’s got back control of the match. That’s what matters most.
Scott sits Gonsalves up and applies a neck crank. When Gonsalves doesn't give up, Scott delivers a falling knee drop to the spine. He gets back to his feet and reapplies the neck crank.
Stephy Auger: You think he’s going to tap here.
Kris Cruise: I don’t doubt that Owen’s in pain. But it’s going to take more than that to get Owen to submit.
Scott tries to twist Gonsalves' neck as much as he can. Wristlock Sinatra can be seen yelling out in pain. The official gives him another chance to give up. When Gonsalves refuses, Scott follows up with a rolling neck snap. After Gonsalves turns over into the prone position, Scott heads back over and positions Gonsalves' legs around his. He then reaches down before snatching a hold of Gonsalves' wrists. From there, the crowd cheers as Scott executes a rolling Surfboard Stretch!
Kris Cruise: Look at this!
Scott continues to roll Gonsalves around until he stops and keeps Gonsalves elevated with a traditional surfboard.
Stephy Auger: Chandler’s getting the better of Owen on the ground. I didn’t I’d be saying that after the first two matches.
Scott keeps Gonsalves held in place while he compresses his shoulderblades. Gonsalves can be heard groaning as he's hangs helpless in the submission. The referee asks Gonsalves if he wants to give up. Gonsalves refuses. The referee asks him again. Gonsalves shakes his head. From there, the crowd oohs and aahs when Scott pulls back and transitions into a chinlock Surfboard stretch.
Kris Cruise: Look at this!
The referee asks Gonsalves if he wants to give up. After Gonsalves refuses, there's some boos when Scott transitions into a fish hook surfboard stretch. The official is quick to give Scott to the count of five to break the hold.
Ref: ONE... TWO... THREE... FOUR...
The crowd oohs and aahs again when Scott transitions into a Surfboard Dragon Sleeper! Gonsalves yells out in pain.
Kris Cruise: Oh my!
Stephy Auger: AH! Now Owen is REALLY feeling it!
Gonsalves is asked if he wants to give up. The crowd gasps when they see Gonsalves' arm flailing around.
Stephy Auger: No way!
Kris Cruise: Owen might! Owen might tap out right here!
It looks like Owen’s about to tap, but he doesn't. He wags his finger at the official. Frustrated, Scott lets go of the hold.
Scott picks up Gonsalves and whips him hard into the corner. Gonsalves staggers out of the corner until he gets whipped into the far corner. Scott runs over to attack, but a back elbow knocks him back. Scott shakes off the blow before rushing back in. This time, a forearm smash followed by a European Uppercut knock him back. Gonsalves then quickly hoists himself up onto the middle ropes before knocking Scott down into the prone position with a shotgun dropkick!
Kris Cruise: What a dropkick from Owen!
Stephy Auger: Yeah, he put something extra behind that one. He nearly knocked Chandler right out of the ring.
Both grapplers slowly get back to their feet. Gonsalves is the first to strike as he marches over and nails Scott with a shoot kick. A second shoot kick knocks Scott back. After a third shoot kick knocks Scott against the ropes, Gonsalves heads over and unleashes a flurry of shoot kicks to the chest! The cheers continue as Scott slowly slumps down against the ropes. Gonsalves lets out a yell before taking off into the far ropes. When he returns, Scott quickly gets up and dumps him over the top rope to the floor!
NO!
Gonsalves lands on the apron. Scott turns around, only to get caught with a shoulder thrust through the ropes. Gonsalves then quickly pulls him out of the apron and into a standing headscissors!
Kris Cruise: No! NO, NO, NO, NO, NO…
The crowd cheers when Gonsalves hooks both of Scott's arms.
Stephy Auger: YES! It’s about to be over right here, Cruise!
Gonsalves goes to lift him up for the Angel Duster (double underhook piledriver), but Scott kicks his legs on the way up. After he's forced himself back down, he breaks free of the underhooks, stands up and nails Gonsalves with a European Uppercut. Gonsalves answers back with a European Uppercut of his own. Scott nails Gonsalves with another European Uppercut. Gonsalves answers back with another European Uppercut of his own. The official can be seen pleading for both men to get back inside while they trade European Uppercuts on the apron. Gonsalves then cuts Scott off with a forearm smash. Scott gets caught off with a second forearm smash. Gonsalves then catches him with a pair of forearms, then another. Gonsalves motions for another forearm until Scott cuts him off with a Kesagiri chop. Gonsalves gets caught with a second Kesagiri chop. Scott then throws out a spinning Kesagiri chop, only for Gonsalves to grab him from behind and counter with the Paroxysm (Snap Dragon Suplex)!
Kris Cruise: OH NO!
Gasps and cheers are heard as Scott bounces off the apron before falling to the floor!
Kris Cruise: Did you hear that thud!? That was right on the hardest part of the ring!
Gonsalves holds his back before slipping down to the floor. He heads over and slowly pulls Scott back to his feet before backing up near the steel steps. Gonsalves goes for a Tornado DDT off the steps, but Scott pushes him off in mid air. Gonsalves lands on his feet before Scott runs over to attack. The crowd cheers when Gonsalves counters the oncoming rush with a Michinoku Driver on the floor!
Kris Cruise: Chandler just got driven head-first onto the floor!
Stephy Auger: Good thing the padding was still there!
Kris Cruise: After the snap Dragon Suplex on the apron and then the Michinoku Driver on the floor, I don’t know how much he’s got left in him!
Gonsalves picks up Scott and rolls him back inside. After rolling back in, he drags Scott away from the ropes. Gonsalves holds his lower back before dropping down for the cover.

Gonsalves takes Scott and brings him into the corner. From there, Gonsalves plants him with a Tornado DDT. As soon as Scott bounces off his head and gets on his knees, Gonsalves is quickly to lock on a Grapevine Kimura Lock!
Kris Cruise: Equivalent Exchange!
NO!
As soon as Gonsalves gets wrist to wrist control, Scott knows he's in trouble. So Scott takes the hand of the arm that's trapped and immediately grabs the back of his knee, preventing Gonsalves from bringing the arm behind him and fully applying the hold. He then leans forward, which pins Gonsalves' shoulders to the mat!

Kris Cruise: Good counter and escape by Scott for the two count.
After both grapplers scramble to their feet, they rush towards each other. Gonsalves goes to strike first, but Scott dips his shoulder and lifts him up with a fireman's carry. Before Scott can bring him down with a fireman's carry neckbreaker, Gonsalves delivers repeated elbows to the side of the head. He then slips down from behind, tackles Scott down and applies the Crossface Oblivion Wing (Arm Trap Crossface)!
NO!
Scott quickly uses his right arm to cover up the back of his head. Gonsalves starts to rain down forearms and pointed elbow strikes. Scott does his best to try and block the strikes. So Gonsalves grabs the fingers on his right hands and starts to bend them! Gonsalves then quickly slips his hands around Scott's face and fully applies the hold.
Stephy Auger: Owen’s got him!
Scott cries out in pain while Gonsalves pulls back on the hold. The referee asks him if he wants to give up. Scott refuses, so Gonsalves starts pulling back over and over.
Kris Cruise: This is the last place where Chandler wants to be! He’s already submitted to this move once in this series!
Scott holds his free arm out. He isn't near the ropes, but he's not trapped in the center of the ring, either. Scott continues to cry out in pain as Gonsalves has him dead to rights. The crowd begins to anticipates a submission as Scott's hand hovers over the mat. The Chandler fans grow weary when they see the hand start to shake.
Kris Cruise: Chandler looks like he’s about to tap again!
Gonsalves is nodding his head after yelling at Scott to tap. He can feel the submission coming.
Stephy Auger: Owen’s got him!
Owen can taste that 3-0 lead! It's seconds away!
Kris Cruise: Chandler has to dig down deep and hang on! If he loses here, this series is effectively over!
The referee waits with bated breath for Scott to give up.
... he does! He does give up!
NO!
Scott wags his finger at the official!
Kris Cruise: He’s not quitting! He’s hanging on!
Scott grunts as he uses the free arm to reach out and drag himself forward. He grunts again as he slowly drags himself across the canvas. Gonsalves puts a top to this by violently yanking back on the hold.
Stephy Auger: Owen wants that submission BAD!
The referee asks Scott if he wants to give up. He doesn't get an answer. The referee then asks him a second time. Again, no answers. The referee warns Scott that he needs to see him trying to defend himself or else he's going to call it.
Kris Cruise: He might be out!
The official asks Scott a third time he wants to give up. He still doesn't get an answer! Just as the ref's about to call it, Scott grunts as he drags himself forward and grabs onto the bottom rope.
Kris Cruise: How much closer can you get!?
Ref: ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR! FIV-
Gonsalves breaks the hold. He immediately gets back to his feet and starts stomps away on Scott's back.
Stephy Auger: Owen’s not letting up.
Gonsalves yanks him up, pushes him into the corner and snaps his head back with multiple European Uppercuts. He then sends Scott slumping down with forearm smash after forearm smash. After Scott slumps down to a seated position, Gonsalves backs up just past the center of the ring. He then charges forward, throws himself at Scott and nails with with a shotgun dropkick to the face!
Gonsalves returns to his feet, circles the ring and nails Scott with another shotgun dropkick to the face. Gonsalves marches over into the far corner. He then charges across the ring before nailing Scott with a third shotgun dropkick to the face!
Stephy Auger: If Chandler still knows where he is, it’s a miracle.
Gonsalves pulls him up and sits him on the top turnbuckles before dropping him awkwardly on his head with Australia Street (Top Turnbuckle Hung Cutter)!
Kris Cruise: He finally got it!
The cheers continue as Gonsalves picks up Scott, turns him towards the corner and brings him down with Paroxysm!
Stephy Auger: That snap Dragon Suplex just returned Scott to the mat!
Gonsalves sets up for a third snap Dragon when Scott reverses with a wheelbarrow victory roll into a European Clutch!

The crowd explodes with cheers as "Animal Ghosts" blasts over the PA.
J.A. Aldridge: The winner of this bout, CHANDLER SCOTT!
The cheers continue as Scott rolls to the outside. He clutches his neck before raising his arm in victory. Gonsalves sits in the ring in complete shock. He holds up three fingers at the official. But the referee shakes his head and holds up two fingers back at him.
Kris Cruise: Chandler Scott just snuck away with one here tonight!
Stephy Auger: You can say that again!
Kris Cruise: After Owen was finally able to drop Chandler for the first time in this series with Australia Street, it looks like it was all but over! Those Paroxysm snap Dragon Suplexes have been Chandler’s downfall all series. But he was not only able to time the reversal at the right moment, but also keep that bridge held after all those targeted neck attacks. Hell of a counter and a hell of a match from these two. Chandler gets his first win in this Best of 7 series. But Owen still lead 2-1!
