Closer and closer to the finale; the room filled with wrestlers for the press conferences have narrowed and this show it’s down to just two. With another seemingly endless sea of reporters on the other side, the Hellcat Spangled Death Squad take the stage once more. They’re now a bit more familiar with being in front of everyone or perhaps that’s just the mental toll of having to answer questions they already know the answer to taking effect on them. Either way, they’re happy to be here undoubtedly and it’s Anastasia Hayden who gets this show on the road once again.
Anastasia Hayden: We did it.
There’s a pause as Ana looks around the room in her attempt to create some dramatic tension.
Anastasia Hayden: Again.
Since no one else does it, Ana softly applauds for the Hellcats while Lisa pats her partner on the back and gives her a brief thumbs up.
Lisa Seldon: Proud of you, Big Cat.
Anastasia Hayden: I told you that we’d beat Best Number Four Business and sure enough, we did it. Not quite the masterpiece that Lisa and I put together in the first round, but could Michelangelo ever create something as majestic as the Sistine Chapel? Probably not. I didn’t take art history in high school. But what I did excel at was sports and that’s why we’re here today. Isn’t that right, Lisa?
Lisa Seldon: I was pretty happy with it.
Lisa tries to carry on, but Ana cuts her off. Rude.
Anastasia Hayden: Best For Business were not very good, let’s be honest. The fact that they were runner ups last year makes me very confident about the remaining field left to be honest. Don’t get me wrong, Best For Business also gave us our toughest match yet, but that’s not really saying much, is it? I’m sure we’re up against another great team though and they are…
Another pause as Ana looks at her hand; once again having to write down the names of the competition.
Anastasia Hayden: Big Coffin Hunters. Yes. Of course. I know them. Very familiar with the Big Coffin Hunters. They consist of…
One more peek. It's smudged again. She turns to Lisa.
Lisa Seldon: Dexter Jacobs and...
Anastasia Hayden: And Becca Raze! Of course! Very feared team. A team where Lisa dislikes Dexter quite a lot and being a good teammate, so do I. They’re also a very angry team. Dexter has to use “fuck’ in every other sentence because, I assume, that someone didn’t love him enough growng up and that’s had a very negative effect on his life. A tragedy really. But to be frank, I don’t give a fuck myself.
A very nonchalant shrug; embracing the ability to say bad words too now. Very brave. Very bold.
Anastasia Hayden: I’ve faced people like Dexter and Becca all throughout my career. In fact, I’m set to do it again as I return to 4CW. A lot of aggressive words and empty passion. They can scream at you how they’re going to tear your head off and spit out your blood. Very visceral. Very gruesome. But you know what that amounts to in the ring? Absolutely nothing. You know how many people have told me that they’re gonna be the ones to end my career? I’m still standing here ten years later. They’re not very good at keeping their promises.
Lisa Seldon: To be honest I’m not entirely sure who Becca is, but I suppose it doesn’t matter much. She can stand there nice and count her blessings as we shred her meal ticket in front of her.
Ana scoffs with a roll of the eyes following.
Anastasia Hayden: But enough of those two idiots. How about us? Surely someone out there has a fascinating question that’s going to question how we approach the coffin geeks.
The journalists, bloggers, reporters, whatever look at each other as they’re not entirely sure if that was Anastasia giving them the green light to ask questions. After a bit of silence, Ana clears her throat and motions for them to begin. This time they take the hint and stand up with a lot of noise quickly filling the air. Without much care, Ana points to a guy who introduces himself and hails from Wrestlingpedia Weekly.
Timothy Beck: You touched on it already, but putting down the runner ups from last year has to be a great feeling. Do you two feel-
Anastasia Hayden: Confident? Yes. As far as I’m concerned, we beat the runner ups and that means we’re pretty much locked to at least finish there. Though we’re looking to better that. My understanding is that the team that won DDT3 last year isn’t even in this year, which means every team, excluding us, is worse than them. Every round you can ask us if we’re confident and the answer is always going to be yes.
And to prove just how confident she is, Ana gives a strong nod of confidence with her statement.
Anastasia Hayden: Being the best team in the world means always being confident. I know for a fact that there’s no one out there better than us. We can lose a match and I’ll head into the next one knowing that we’re still the best in the world. I don’t care what kind of rah rah bullshit that the Coffin Hunters spew; teamwork matters. Cohesion matters. Dexter ran his mouth a lot about this when talking about the video game guys. We’re stepping into a dog fight, yeah, sure, bud, but as far as I’m concerned, we’re the two biggest dogs in the yard.
Despite the HellCAT moniker, Ana holds firm as she glares out into the sea of reporters.
Anastasia Hayden: And more importantly, fuck their NEO encounter; Lisa beat Dexter at Snuff Fest. A tournament that had worse conditions than an actual dog fight where Lisa took down deathmatch legend after deathmatch legend...and Dexter too. Now that she’s got a normal tag match against him and his muppet partner, you think that suddenly the odds have shifted into his favor? If Dexter wasn’t good enough to survive against Lisa in a deathmatch tournament, what makes you good enough to survive now?
Lisa Seldon: I also think fuck that match and that guy in it. Dexter beat me during one of the busiest runs of my career. Now I'm a hundred times busier and I'm going to fuck up his entire life. I did it at Snuff Fest already. I beat him where it counts. Now I’m back with the top team in the world, sitting on a shot at the final and I’m going to be dancing on his face when we win it.
Time for the next question and despite the hostility the two spit at everyone; they’re still eager to get their soundbite or headline for their next article that’ll get 50 retweets if they’re lucky. Taking a moment, Lisa singles out a guy from Sports Entertainment Monthly.
Ash Brewster: So far in the tournament, you two have faced against more traditional teams. The Big Coffin Hunters are a bit more...unorthodox. And while Lisa has fared well against that in singles competition, do you think that unorthodox style will throw you two off as a team?
Anastasia Hayden: Absolutely not. I don’t care how bad and tough and rough Dexter and Becca think they are. A few days after this tournament ends, I’m meant to get into a match with a couple of psychopaths where I got thrown off a cage and through a table. There’s nothing orthodox about that. Just because Lisa and I haven’t done any deathmatch bonding exercises as a team doesn’t mean a damn thing. If you want to talk about survival, we’ve survived. We’re more than just words that lack substance. We’re a proven commodity of survival. Everything the Big Coffin Hunters think they are? We actually are.
Lisa Seldon: If it makes any of you feel better I’m willing to go off on her with a chair covered in shattered glass and broken dreams, but I don’t think that’s going to matter. We beat teams at our game, not theirs.
Ana takes exception to the thought of being beaten with said chair, but nods anyway in agreement with her partner.
Anastasia Hayden: Come for our heads and we’ll already have them chopped off. Nobody can dish out the punishment like we do and no one can withstand the damage like we do. We kill ourselves for this business and we do it with a smile. However tough they think they are, they’re in for a reality check once we roll into town. The Hellcats are the greatest batch of wrestlers, the greatest batch of tag teams, the greatest trio, the greatest stable, we’re just the greatest! So moral of the story time, kids, listen up. We’re going to beat the Big Coffin Hunters and then we’re going into the finals of DDT3 and then...we’re going to win it!
With her closing statement, Ana tosses her hands up in triumphant fashion as if they’ve already won the whole tournament. Lisa does her best to support her partner and the two do their little pose before making their exit from the stage. As they make their way out, Lisa asks if maybe Ana overdid it a bit to which she just waves it off.
